I read years ago before this engine, that Ford had tried a double overhead four valve head on the existing four litre six and didn't make enough gains to be worthwhile. It must be the VCT that made it work. I was disappointed Ford threw away the smoothness achieved with the Intech in favour of KW. They had been criticised for years over it's rough running compared to other sixes. Didn't it matter anymore in 2002??

I’m almost speechless. I’ve always been a fan of your videos, how well they’re put together, the information provided and the quality of the whole thing. I’ve also always gotten a bit teary eyed with your videos at times as we look back at the cars we’ve made in years gone by, the Ford vs Holden rivalry. Growing up I was more in the middle of the Ford/Holden thing, maybe with a slight skew towards Ford as the years went on, bolstered by my brief ownership of an XF Falcon that I loved. As I got older and started understanding things at a depth I never could when I was younger, I realised Ford had a much harder time than Holden did because they were out on their own with a bespoke platform and engines for their cars on a smaller budget and I really grew to respect that. But this was on a whole new level and very quietly between you and me, this one gave me tears streaming down my face at the end. Keep up the good work

I'm an eagle eyed viewer, so here's the no. of Barras that were in the video: 10:55 (green BA wagon), 12:47 (blue BA ute), 24:36 (red FG ute) & 25:30 (white SX Territory). Not to mention the quite stunning XR6 Turbo you have yourself and the montage at the end. The BA Falcon is personally my favourite Falcon and honestly my favourite car of all time, a lot of this is due to childhood nostalgia, as well as they're solid, dependable, reliable vehicles that if given the right circumstances could be an exciting and thrilling vehicle to drive. I was born in 1997, so I grew up watching these on TV just as Ford started winning again after the four years of straight losses with the AU. I remember seeing Marcos Ambrose in the blue Pirtek BA & Russell Ingall in the Caltex BA winning in approx 2003 or 2004, then throughout the years seeing Loundes & Wincup winning in BAs and BFs. I even remember getting up super early in 2007 when I saw Ford unveil the BF Cobra GT & Cobra Ute as a special anniversary model to commemorate the XC Cobra. It didn't help that we also had Fords growing up, since my Dad, Grandfather & my Uncle were also Ford men themselves, we had several Fords growing up. Dad had an XC GS 4.9L V8, XD Fairmont wagon 4.9L V8, XF S-Pack wagon, both us and my grandfather had ZK Fairlanes with the 4.1 EFI six (he also had an XD GL sedan before his ZK, and my uncle had an XD panel van, an XE wagon and an XF sedan), then after a detour with an L67 VS Statesman which got stolen and wrecked, & a Land Rover DIscovery (which was a disaster) for a few years, we went back to Ford and Mum got an FG G6 in 2014 which we had until 2019, then a BA Futura after we were forced to sell the FG due to needing money, and now she has an EL Fairmont Ghia, and I myself now own an AU II XR8 that I just got about a month ago. The blood in my veins is clearly blue lol. Ford Australia have always made good and honest cars and I always tend to smile when I see one, and I really only remember having trouble twice out of all of the ones we had, our ZK Fairlane's engine died at about 350k so we swapped in the XF S-pack engine into it as that was off the road (they were both 4.1 EFI sixes so it worked fine), and the FG needed the bushes done (which if I think about it was around when it hit 100k so you were right when it comes to diff bushes), and the immobilizer prevented it from starting once due to a weak battery causing us to be stranded. Overall though I love the BA and while I don't own a decent one yet, someday a goal of mine is to find a nice F6 Typhoon and keep it next to my AU XR8, as both of those are in the top three of my dream cars (the third being a V2 Holden Monaro). One other project I've dreamed of since I was 17 was to create a custom Barra turbo wagon, I'd love to find a BA XT or Futura wagon, grab the engine and a manual trans out of an XR6T, F6 or even just build one myself from an NA Barra, and the body kit from an XR6T or a Typhoon/Tornado and stick it on a wagon body. I have an unhealthy obsession with wagons, so I'd kill to have something like that. Shame Ford never did it as I see plenty of fast V8 Holden wagons everywhere so there could have been a market for it. Anyways enough rambling about my love of Fords, you made a great video, been subbed since an American friend asked me about Aussie Fords and linked your original NC Fairlane video a few years ago, and after I watched it I wanted I liked the content that I subbed. This video by far is the best one you've made so far so keep it up my man.

Thanks so much for the comment mate. It really was cool seeing those cars fly by whilst I was talking. The Green BA wagon in particular was perfect. A lot of my love of cars comes from nostalgia as well - it's a powerful thing.

Nice. I've got a silver BA wagon at the moment. XR8 front end, 19" FG XR6 50th anniversary 5 spoke wheels, mild worked NA motor and exhaust. Want to change to 10 spoke G6E wheels and eventually boost, but first need to upgrade the diff and change to 6 speed manual. Getting there slowly : ) BTW I'm a Holden man, but it's been great to see what all the fuss is about with the Barra. It's just a great engine. And besides, both Holden and Ford are both dead, so it's all just Australian to me now. Plus I'm sick of bloody Commodores. Owned too many of them and they all have their share of common problems. Open the bonnet on a VN and it smashes the windscreen because the hinges are clapped out. FFS lol.

I remember seeing a Ba or Bf Falcon on tv as a teen and thinking I didn't know what it was but, it was the coolest car ever. Asked dad what it was and he had no clue either. Found out when I got to school the next day, on the computer, it was an Australian Ford Falcon. Since that day in junior high I have been patiently and sadly waiting to import one into the US. Come on 2027. The mighty Falcons were such wonderful cars, with an even better racing heritage. It truly was a sad sight to see it, along with Ford Australia, basically die in 2016. Much love from across the pond.

You guys would have loved the XR6 and XR8. Saw a video by Larry from Speed Hunters the other day, checking out an import car yard that had one of Paul Walker's old R34s. They also had a Holden ute there from Australia. Top Rank Imports or something was their name. I'm sure there are a few places snatching our wheels and shipping them over. Been happening with the Mad Max XB / XC Falcons for years.
@paulsz61942 жыл бұрын
Would you believe Ford USA considered the FG Falcon ( they imported one to Michigan for evaluation purposes), and the Australian government would have contributed the money for engineering the car to LHD, but exec’s at Ford in Dearborn would never consider a car that wasn’t going to be built in the USA. The FG Falcon could have been the next gen Taurus.

If you take the Holden/Ford preference out of the equation I would actually say the VE was the probably a more important car to our motoring history, don’t get me wrong Ford made the best engine hands down with the Barra but Holden were always pushing Ford to higher levels which Ford were reaching. Holden never had an answer for the Barra but they didn’t need it as their cars were selling well so why change something that was working. Holden together with HSV were always one step ahead of Ford and that is not knocking Ford in anyway but Ford always followed suit with Holden. We were lucky to have both brands pushing to outdo each other and give us these cars we enjoyed and sadly at the end of both Ford and Holden in Australia you have to say we had cars that could compete with most other manufacturers around the world, unfortunately the Australian public lost their patriotism with Aussie cars and jump on the Europe/Japanese market and thus was our demise. I hate trying to prefer Ford or Holden even though I have a softer spot for one of them, both brands were bloody awesome and our generation was lucky to have that. RIP Holden & Ford, you may be gone but you won’t be forgotten anytime soon

A really enjoyable video! All of the discussion about the AU and BA brought back many great memories from my teens. I recall WHEELS magazine having a drawing of what the "AV" Falcon was meant to look like - it was essentially an Audi A4 with a Falcon badge - and the real thing looked fantastic. The resurgance in the V8s, the return of GT and the arrival of the brilliant Territory... it was a great time to be a Ford fan. One thing though, the BA XT came with the Fairmont Ghia headlights with the darker plastic. You've given it the Futura/Fairmont lights. :)

Yup! I added them specifically because they're my two favourite planes. We always used to have F-111's buzz through the valley past the house I grew up in on the Sunshine Coast - always at very low altitude and going very fast with the wings swept back. Perhaps they used that particular run for training? Plus the C-17 is just an incredible looking thing ✌

Absolutely agreed with everything you said. My first BA was an XT wagon and compared to my previous falcon, an EL wagon, this thing was a great step forward in not only power, but ride quality and stability. I then upgraded to an FG XR6 but I missed the practicalities of the wagon. I solved this by buying a Territory Ghia Turbo. For me, the best car Ford Australia ever produced.

The way I looked at the exterior styling changes from the AU to BA, is Ford actually stepped back a bit, and reworked the EL end bits, then stuck those on the AU middle bit. Perhaps the AU went a bit too different, too quickly, and should have only gone half way.

I've owned an XR6 BAII manual N/A, a BFII XR6 T (heaps of grunt that sadly attracted Kangaroo's on old drivers) and FGII NA XR6 limited edition (G6E leather interior) with a few minor mods. All cars are in the element on the long car trip, effortless cruising. Sadly now most people want SUV's, they're what killed our local motor industry and Ford and Holden were too slow to adapt.

I love my FGmk2 ute. I never want to get rid of it. It's just so good for trade work. Alloy tray back fits a full sheet (2400x1200) flat loaded at waist height and 6.0 timber on top right onto your shoulder, or, a literal tonne of whatever. It drives just like a sedan, comfy and low and a heck of a lot quicker than 90% of traffic. The new utes are some hybrid family adventure vehicle, fucking useless elephants that bog up Bunnings with the trailer they have to cart just to be able to load anything.

In hindsight this mini-documentary needed to go viral 10 years ago in Australia ... maybe things may have turned out different for our car industry. Watching this made me feel proud that this motor was developed & refined here in Oz. It highlights that Australian engineering & development could compete with the Germans & Japanese manufacturers. Sadly after the demise of Australian made Fords & Holdens we are just now appreciating just how unique these cars truly were/are ... from stock through to FPV & HSV... and prices are reflecting this ... I have my low km VY Series 2 & have added a low km BA Series 2 as well. Your final doco minutes with a sample of people driving/loving their Fords was a really nice touch ... Kudos to everyone out there preserving these gems of Australiana ...

I got really lucky when I found my 2004 ba xr6. It is a freak car and motor, u will get 1 every now and then. Done 201000 thousand and not 1 leak on the entire car. I'm in the process of converting it to a turbo. I have a gt3584r turbo, which is a bit bigger than the factory turbo. I have a custom tuned new ecu for it. U can't rush the process of converting. I will be running 14 psi and with the secret tune, that is locked, so no 1 else can copy his intense knowledge and experience. He is driving around in a 1200kw ba. And he still had more power if he wanted. I'm looking at getting 550hp from the combination of a few things. Not bad for a 182kw motor. In 20 years, it will be difficult to get parts for the barra. Love your work mate
