You're such a humble bloke Sean, surpised to hear you say you only attempted some jobs due to the motivation of the channel given the way you speak and demonstrate critical thought suggests you're far brighter and capable than you give youreself credit for I expect. For those starting out, do your research, do your research again (knowledge is free), then give it a crack & ignore the noise of opinion absent in data. Remember the demographic of people that work & modify cars is as broad as complete idiots to experienced electrical, mechanical, software life-time engineers that love cars so asking random facebook/forum questions and doing as you're told by those that may be a complete idiot is just as likely to have you do something dangerous or costly as it is to give you success. Back yourself, think about safety and have crack and if you're working on a system that, if it fails while driving, will hurt you, your passengers or the public, swallow your pride at the end and ask a trusted mechanic to take 15min to look over what you did on your first attempt and give you the thumbs up. You'll be surpised of what you're capable of and when you take the time to do it properly becuase it's your own car you may even find the job is done better than you taking it into some random shop with a random tech that is on the clock to get the work done.

I had a BA Fairmont very refined car to drive. I was impressed every time I drove it. It was very thirsty and did tend to float a bit on cornering. The front also vibrated at speed despite wheel balancing etc. When the tranny started playing up traded it for an FG G6E I still have. Its been a great car. I am keeping it.

Let me tell you the tale of another BA Falcon. My V6 Navara was written off after an accident last October. Looking for transport and being over 6' tall I found myself looking at Falcons. The add said 2000 BA Fairmont, 114,000 kilometers. I was suss about the mileage, went to see it and checked out the log books. They were fair dinkum. Everything except the CD player works, cold A/C and no engine or trans leaks. Lovely comfy interior and it drives oh so quiet and smooth. My "stop gap" car is actually going to be long term and it wont be getting replaced.

i got a 2004 BA a year ago with only 100,000 on the clock. they are out there similar interior situation, spent a little on her already just refreshing the suspension, adding a trans cooler ect. would love to throw a bit of power into it but don't have a heap of money for it while keeping her looking clean looking. really great car.

Sean, price is irrelevant. If you are happy with the car and dont feel like you were ripped off and such then the cost doesnt matter. Each to their own. Ive spent $30,000+ on my 2002 Pajero because I love the car and it does everything I need it to do, sure I could have bought a newer one but I would have just spent that money again fixing it. As long as you are happy and havent sent yourself into the doghouse then I say good job 👍

Now I'm watching all of your videos , one , because I've just bought an FGX xr6 Lpg and it's fun to watch others like yourself modify things . Two , it's motivating for me and three , I do love turbos . I actually owned an 85 supra and I rebuilt a 7mgte bottom end myself and grafted it to the 6mge head ... Wow , do I regret selling that now . Mind you the falcon is lowered on 20's and it STICKS to smooth bitumen ... But I better go and fit up the new konis I just had delivered . Cheers . Thanks again 👍

Shaun I just discovered your channel and have been watching a lot of your films with great interest. I too have a BA 2 Mercury Silver XR6 Turbo with the 6 speed speed manual transmission. Mine is about a year newer than yours, but I have now done 240,000km. I have been pretty impressed that you have extracted some 400kw at the crank, well done. And you have not gone crazy, very sensible about it. I bought my car in 2006 for $29K when it was a year old and it had 20,000km on the clock. The immediate issue I confronted was that the front end was really bouncy and it did not matter who I took it to, no one could fix it (Ford, a well known suspension chain, etc). I ended up at a place called Revell Stearing in Canberra (unfortunately a COVID lockdown victim business, they no longer are trading), where they weaved their magic and fixed it, putting on Koni shocks, heavier duty springs, a big heavy duty front sway bar, and lots of new bushes, and probably other things (I can't remember more than that it has been too long). At about the same time I bought a flash tuner off CAPA, which was meant to give the car 300kw at the crank. It certainly transformed the car, it became a monster. More recently I did a middle muffler delete, buying stainless steel pipes that just bolted on where the previous muffler and pipes had been. To my mind it sounds great, it has a great note without being too loud. More recently I took it to a place in Melbourne called ASP Suspension where they replaced a ton of bushes for a very moderate price. Also recently I put some coilovers on the front, which feel great. Oh and I have had my high beam bulbs replaced with LEDs, they are a lot brighter.

You and I definitely share a love for stock/minor/tasteful mods for these cars. Good for the car, and good for the wallet 👍 Looking forward to more vids this year, always a good watch. My FG G6ET is still bone stock, but like you said, things like hoses, radiators, and intercoolers do have a service life and I'll eventually have to look at replacing these things. The Haltech system seems soo good. Plug and Play, but expensive. But if it's cheaper to tune and makes life easier for the tuner then it's a positive. The Haltech guys seem like really good blokes. I think your $20,000 seems like alot, but its future proofing a good solid car that has great performance and can be a daily. Great work mate.

G'day lad. Just joined your channel today. Nice and clear explanations on your vid's. Just a tip for you on this vid' though. Keep an eye on the tube welds at the outside of the last bends before your rear muffler on the Venom mild steel exhaust system. Maybe I was just unlucky but the tube welding on the actual pipe lengths blew out at the same spot on both pipes at around 4yrs old. about 50mm before the front of the rear muffler... I actually have a stainless steel twin 65mm into single 75mm with a single rear muffler set to replace it already ordered as I type. $740 delivered.

8:18 My father's 1982 Cadillac heater T piece ruptured on a highway. Age, brittle, those things happen with no warning so a metal one is good call. There was no temperature gauge, just a "HOT" bulb. Engine was gone by the time he could pull off the highway. It still ran before he sold it years later but it couldn't even get up a slight incline with full throttle due to the lack of compression. So $30 now is 100% worth it given you were doing the rest of the tubes anyway.

Sean, hahaha... You fell into the hole next to the one I did. I went from a Barra N/A to the Aussie Raptor Supercharger though (everyone's doing turbo, I wanted different). You wanted the best you can afford but still keeping legal, streetable, no-fuss, but still tough. I would have gone turbo but as you pointed out, I would have had to pay more than what you did. I'm going through the legal route at the moment to allow the SC (nearly there) so it can be insured on the road and not have the cops ping me either. It's still a daily driver but will go to the "fun" drags once the COVID BS settles down. I just kept the stock engine, changed the exhaust, went to a Haltech ECU, changed the fuel pump and injectors. It's on an emissions tune at the moment but was recorded at half than what was required to pass examination - so quite impressed with that result. Once it's cleared rego examination (got held up on minor stuff unrelated to the SC) I'm going to put on Water/Meth - and I hope that's the end of it 😜

I've enjoyed this series, well done. I did feel like pointing out however, that your earlier comments in this video about keeping stock cooler piping is "good enough" etc.. While this may be true - airflow, i.e. efficiency, is everything. Anything you can do to improve efficiency will result in either more power, better reliability, or both. A good example of this is why you often see aftermarket shops recommend upgraded OEM turbos (and coolers, piping) for some cars. You could easily make the same power at much lower boost in a car with more efficient turbo and breathing. This will mean lower air temps, cylinder pressure, knock etc... Take-away - If you're dumping 20k into a project - an extra thousand or two for piping and other things you missed, is just cheap insurance.

This is a better bang for your buck than building up a barra. People think making good power in a barra is cheap where in reality you have to spend over $20k for it to make it usable and reliable. That's where I think it's just silly spending that much and barely run 10's. Ls all the way, way cheaper to make more and better power than the ancient barra

If you get someone to port the rear housing properly it'll easily control boost at the power levels you're after. I'm happy to do it for you if you want, I'm local to you too. Also worth checking how much 'throw' the gate you currently have has, some of the aftermarket ones don't move very far so they aren't great at controlling boost.

@@MotoringBoxTV I've had mates that buy them and the ones that I've seen they basically drill the hole bigger and put a bigger flapper on, which doesn't actually help that much, you really need to port the housing as if you're porting a head, to encourage flow through the gate. Anyway if you buy one that's already 'ported' I'm happy to have a look and let you know if it needs 'proper' porting, happy to do it for free anyway, as it doesn't take that long.

Great video, very detailed and I'm sure you did thorough research prior to doing this. Still, $20k for a car with that power is peanuts. Compare it with a factory car with the same. A classic car v8? The engine alone would cost more than that for the same power. I'd like to know exactly how much difference each stage got, vs the $$. I mean there's no limit to what you can do with a car. Some people pour $100k into a car and still want more. The 1st option though, intercooler and exhaust. Would be interested to know how much difference that made from stock.

Ultrex and XForce both make a 4” dump, cat and 4” to 3.5” taper to bolt up directly to the stock cat-back stainless 3.5” system. Around $750-$1000 and bolts straight up without any mods to factory cat back. Love the vids Sean and I really appreciate your manner and highly professional presentation. I also love your approach to getting the most outta stock bits-sometimes certain parts become accepted as “must change” items, while they are perfectly suitable and in no way restrictive at moderate power levels. Hi Sean, it is always great to see a well-explained breakdown of an engine's modification costs and end power result. You did a top-notch presentation. Now, I am a strange Aussie as I have no allegiance to a brand - as long as it is fast. I have owned everything from a Valiant R/T Charger, an XA 351 Coupe and a HQ GTS. The fastest cars I owned, by far, were two Nissan 200SX's. This is NOT a peeing contest, but I could not believe that the S14 200SX cost only 3K to gain an extra 50% power. This included a 3" mandrel exhaust and factory looking Tru-Flo muffler. A Chinese intercooler kit, Walbro fuel pump, re-mapped ECU, pod filter and dyno time. The end result was 160rwk and an impressive 400nm of torque. I hate the boy racer look, so it had no spoiler and stock wheels. A total sleeper. At just over 1000kg, it killed plenty of V8's. Keep up the excellent content. You have probably forgotten, but I was the bloke who bought the office kit (table) for the AU 😁

At the end of the day, are you happy with what you've done to the XR6T? Even though I don't own an XR6T, economically you've done well to keep a classic on the road. I bought my '03 Holden VY Series I S Ute back in 2014. On the outside the body was tired but no rust. I paid $1800 for it & mechanically it was sound as a pound. I ended up restoring my ute in 2015 with OEM parts & having it repainted in the same colour. I did some upgrades along the way. At the end of the day (including the cost of the ute), it cost me $10,200. I saved money by doing all the body prep work myself. Apart from needing a new radiator, power steering pump, air condenser, heater tap & a couple of hoses, it's still more economical to run than todays cars & dual-cabs. For those wanting to do upgrades or restorations, do your research first! Check to see what's safe & economical to do & plan with your budget in mind before you do the job(s). Great video Sean, you're also saving an Aussie Icon!

Good job mate, 20k yes, but think of the alternate options, now in this country it's Euro, either a C63, or BMW M3 or 5, and your well over 20k, so in my mind it's cheap at that cost, and it's a Falcon, so it's all good, and in the sea of twin cab diesel powered shitbox utes these days, it's a breath of fresh air, and good old 4 door performance sedans, great job mate 👍

A good video would be the difference between a roller dyno and a hub dyno sean. Interesting to see what you would make and the mathematics to make it happen as usually i think it's about a 15% power difference depending on the size of the roller.

All that money and you could have just thrown in an aftermarket cam and spring into a LS like a VE/VF SS and it would have made the same or more power for 1/4 of the price almost if you did it yourself.

Engines aren't cheap to rebuild now even with all work done by myself. Thanks for the revealing of $s spent. I bought the car as a roller with complete interior a year ago minus running gear for 900 bucks so ill be winning when its done. Also im like you, l like a clean stock engine bay so ill follow suit. Opinions vary and what not, Like I personally think spending 1k on a radiator is crazy and the 3k for the haltech instead of the extra couple hundred for pcmtec tune (which powers quite alot of 1000hp barras) is nuts and I personally would of spent that 4 grand elsewhere like rods, pistons, oil pump gears, head studs, turbo side intake and new wrap around piping for alot more power. But at the end of the day sean you've still made an extremely clean, well running barra with good street power with mostly stock parts. If you are happy that's all that counts!
