For the 1985 model year Ford surprised performance car fans by offering a BMW type performance car for sale at its Lincoln-Mercury dealership network called the Merkur XR4Ti. This car would receive kudos from many in the automobile press and performance car enthusiasts at the time. Unfortunately it was never the big sales success that Ford had expected.
