Mary Barra CEO and Mark Royce President have each sold more shares in the last three years than they currently hold in gm*. Why is this not mainstream knowledge? If any Tesla exec sold a few shares it would be the talk of the finance channels. *SEC filings. Referred to in a video from Connecting the Dots YT channel.

I don't think it's possible for Ford to survive. Ford management made a fundamental mistake when they outsourced the majority of the content of their vehicles. That outsourcing converted what could have been profit into cost. Ford is in the unenviable position of being an assembly company using union labor to compete with vertically integrated manufacturers using free market labor. Some of those companies are doing it within the US.That means that even if Ford can match prices of comparable vehicles from the vertically integrated company its profit will be miniscule Compared to that of its competitors who can take a portion of the difference and invested in growth and R&D. GM is in the same situation.

GM’s EV strategy is different from Ford and Stellantis. GM will only sell new EV’s for profit, hence the pricing above $50k for their vehicles. Starting with the Equinox EV later this year, GM will enter into the lower priced markets and still make a profit on each vehicle they sell. It is a slower ramp-up to full production, but one without the huge losses as seen at Ford and Rivian.
@yourcrazybear
@yourcrazybear 24 күн бұрын
@@jvaubry That's a poor strategy. The winners are ramping up their production as fast as possible. Innovating as fast as possible. The losers are scaling back their production and trying to sell their low volume of cars for higher than market prices.

There are no incentives to invest (an expense that lowers profits) in new technology. CEOs are supposed to be doing that, long term planning, but that is not what their pay encourages them to do. Ford must redesign their production lines, optimize Cost of Goods, and redesign their BEV’s around a new unified computer system. They must produce affordable high tech vehicles that consumers want. And they need to do it before Tesla starts selling a cheaper than model 3 model. If they don’t their sales will drop faster than they can keep up with and will go bankrupt. Very few manufacturing jobs in the US anymore. Jobs are in service and retail now and retail is being decimated by online giants like Amazon. Service will be replaced with robots. You either own capital like businesses, stocks, and land, or you will be poor, surviving on UBI, assuming there is a UBI. Look at Australia and European countries where many youth don't work, just collect welfare. The big challenge will be keeping the poor satisfied and busy doing something or many will turn to protests, violence and crime simply for something to do.

I agree with you regarding the historical and positive role of unions in helping to achieve, and maintain working conditions for its membership. Unfortunately, these days, withdrawal of labour (striking) to achieve demands is becoming less relevant. Machines that build machines are less reliant on their human colleagues, and, more importantly, they are becoming "intelligent". Of course, most of us are still operating on the assumption that Tesla is a car company. It is in fact, a data, computing, robotics, and AI company. Furthermore, over the next decade, the introduction of self driving and robotaxis means that an increasing number of folks will no longer need their own personal transport. The implications of this are profound. At the very least it will make it harder for legacy OEMs to compete and the market for efficient and personal transport will shrink and be even more competitive. It is sad for production line workers in the legacy OEMs, and there needs to be investment in transitioning them to other sectors. But where can they go?

It's easy to see that these folks don't really follow the auto industry, outside of Tesla of course. It may come from the significant overlap between Tesla vehicle ownership and TSLA stock ownership, something that is not common in the automotive world. Most Ford fans don't own or care about Ford's economics or share price. The company is profitable, has an industry typical PE of 6-ish, and pays dividends regularly. This only matters to institutional investors, Ford retirees, and the conservative investors who hold the stock. The company is profitable, well managed, and relatively stable. No. It's not a cover up. They just aren't good enough. You also can't cut costs if you don't ramp up your production. Economy of scales is needed both for them and their suppliers. So far legacy automakers have screwed over their suppliers so many times as well.

They may be bleeding money from EVs, but they had a net profit of $4.3B last year. They could use that profit to subsidize the EV losses, until they can reduce costs, but they aren't willing to do that because it would piss off the shareholders.

In order to reduce costs they needed to scale up their production. Not scale down. They simply don't have a spine. Or a good plan for that matter.

@@yourcrazybear but even as they scaled production, they would suffer massive losses for several years, and management isn't willing to do that because all they care about is the short term bottom line. Pension funds and other large holders of their stock would be screaming.

This tariff the government is going to add to Chinese imports is just going to make things worse for legacy auto. It will allow them to drag their feet even longer so they get even further behind Tesla and China. Every day they delay doing high-volume production just makes their situation worse. They have to accept that they will lose money until they achieve volume production. They are trying to play it safe with hybrids, but that is a losing proposition as battery prices will drop and both Tesla and China will be ready to flood the market with even lower priced EVs (that will be cheaper than ICE cars and hybrids) and that will be the end of legacy auto.

Unfortunately for FORD, they are not looking in the right direction. Their problem is design. Look at what Tesla has done to reduce costs through better design, "best part is no part", and vertical integration. Ford must bite the bullet, get better engineers (poach some from Tesla?) and do the same or they will eventually go into a downward spiral as they flail around trying to do things "the old way." Get smart or fail. FORD F'ed up big time when they rolled out the Lightning without even being able to come close to break even on it. Then 200K orders later and they were sweating bullets looking at the losses on paper. It will take them years just to fulfill those initial orders because they shot themselves in the A$$ trying to get it to market so fast. Go back to the drawing board and build a better, more efficient design that is at least break even before trying to roll it out.

It is too bad that Ford and others can't make good EV's and they are resorting to making crappy hybrids when we need zero emissions vehicles. Hybrids are the worst of both worlds, not really good for the environment as they still pollute as much as 70% as a regular ICE vehicle and they also aren't good for people's pocketbooks as it takes about 3 to 8 years to break even with gas savings the extra money you have to pay for the ridiculous hybrid power train.😞

Ford will probably substantially scale back their EV business and just focus on ICE and hybrids. If the market shifts to EVs over time (Ford and other OEMs - probably hoping a long time), they may try to do EVs at low volume. Leverage the politicking against EVs, use other ways to discredit EVs and influence policy. Maybe battery breakthroughs (from 3rd parties) might allow them to re-enter the fray. The risk of course is that they will not gain experience and drive down costs on large scale manufacturing. They just don't want to become Nokia.
