Thanks for your candid review. As for the negative comments it's better to know the problems in advance and cost that into ownership. If anyone knows of a car that runs forever without repairs or maintenance then please enlighten us all. I'm looking at an smax as I do have kids and do carry a lot of stuff but sick of mpv boat like handling. If you own a 2ltr petrol x sport 2010/2014 please share your ownership experience.

Ik heb een 5-bak S max benzine motor nu zo'n 10 jaar en er is nog nooit iets mee geweest. Top auto, lekker ruim en relatief sportief rijden.

These problems highlighted, even the 'frequent' one have never happened to me, I have 2 Smax's now, the older one has covered 197000 miles or 317000 km and I've not experienced these problems. Because the SMax shares the same platform with the Mondeo (Volvo S60 underpinnings) you will need to change rear suspension bushes at around 150000 miles and the cam belt at 125000 miles and the hand brake cable is good for 190000 miles, but apart from that it really depends on how you look after them and how you service and drive them, I wouldn't have bought another if I didn't like the first one....

David Viner It's good to know informations like these from an owner who actually is having experience with the car rather to on relying on what other people say. Can I ask you which engines are you having in your S-Maxes? I'm planning to buy a 2007 model with the 2.0 L petrol engine just because I'm using the car most of time in the city environment for work and personal purposes too and I don't travel distances that long so in conditions like these a petrol engine is more suitable. I'm currently using a 2004 Ford Galaxy 1.9 PD TDI and because of the mentioned driving conditions the dual mass flywheel is having to be replaced due to the fact that in cold weather conditions the engine is not reaching the optimal temperature before I'm shutting it down, due to the fact that I travel short distances which is killing it in long term usage while I have to rev sometimes out the engine just for spitting out the deposited soot from the exhaust manifold and turbo which is reoccuring freqvently because I'm staying a lot in the traffic jams (utilising the rpm range in which the turbo is not engaged which might clog after a while in a scenario like this). The 2.0 petrol engine is not having turbo which might fail (and will be expensive to replace), no dual mass flywheel, no DPF which is tending to clog or needing to regeerate while the fuel injection system of a petrol unit is also less problematic, at least in the way I'm using the car.

Zoltan Benedek Hi Zoltan, sorry I've only just seen this, both are 2l tdci diesel engines, I drove the 2l petrol but the fuel consumption is much better for high mileage with the diesels, also they have more torque so pull the car better. Petrol engines are better for lots of city driving

I can't find any specific reference to the DPF issues he says affects some early diesels. I'm looking at a 2006 S-Max 2.0 Diesel so am interested in finding out if the 'software update' has been done for the DPF.

Darren Loke The diesel models and the automatics are having the tendencies of having those problems which were mentioned in the video. Ford is importing diesel engines from PSA which is Peuget - Citroen so basically your getting a rebadget HDi engine in your Ford (that is the main reason why they suck). The 2.0 L petrol engine before the Ecoboost era was co-developed with Mazda due to the fact that the two companies were partners until 2013, so that power plant is the same 1999 cc unit as the one from the Mazda 5 for example which is reliable. Except that windshield wiper thing there is nothing to worry about in case of a petrol model with a manual transmission
