Thanks for the video, just want to add a few things I learned while replacing mine.. I used the gray colored RTV specifically for water pumps. Also, make sure you use high temp thread sealer on the bolts that penetrate the water jacket. When you remove the water pump, some of the bolts will have a red colored thread sealer on them, the sealer I used is white. After re-assembling the water pump, I let the RTV and sealer cure for twenty-four hours..no leaks after a month of driving so far. My original water pump lasted 208,000 miles!!.

Thanks for the vid; love that you gave us bolt sizes to help speed things up. An important note about the replacement part = I put in whatever Auto Zone has as the cheapest and it went bad in no time; spent the money for the Ford part like the one I replaced after over 100,000 miles.

Thank you for this video!!! Everyone should know the essentials of car maintenance and repair, but it's rare to see any more. Thanks so much for giving people (especially chicks like me who can turn a wrench!! :] ) the power to do it themselves. The professionals DO ALWAYS KNOW BEST, but I can't bear to take my car in knowing I'm only going to be paying for a guy to turn a wrench. Thanks for connecting the dots for me, and giving me a reference for the parts of the water pump I was fuzzy on!!! Can't thank you enough!

I got a 1998 Taurus wagon with 24V dohc and have 106000 miles. I had the same problem engine started to run hot while coming home from fast food store near my house. First thing I replaced was thermostat it had 180 degree unit, and I changed it with another 180 but still run hot while checking for overheating. One thing I did notice was my water pump was cool to touch and my engine hot and still over heating. Next thing I did was to remove the water pump, on 24V water pump and housing comes off together, so I got the pump off the engine I looked into the outlet and I can see the impeller were broken. I took the pump off the housing and impeller is made of plastic and impeller broke in three pieces. I'm shock to see that your water pump is made of metal and you still lost the impeller. I know why they used the plastic impeller but if I was driving to San Diego or Vegas it would blown the head gasket. Its been a 3 weeks and still running good. Thank for your video

I know this video is old but this shows how important it is to change your coolant. You don't have to change as frequently as oil but it's pretty easy (on most vehicles). And you don't have to flush unless there is a problem that requires you to do so (Rust, oil contamination, wrong coolant, tap water, etc.) I have an 05 Taurus with about 254,000 miles on it and just did the Timing cover gasket and water pump gasket and both the timing cover and water pump had just slight surface corrosion with the impeller fully intact and the splines were good and they are factory original. And the coolant had been changed somewhat regularly by the previous owner. There is also a whole host of other problems caused by not changing the coolant other than just this. Preventative maintenance can last you a long time.

Great video with lots of good tips. Did our 2000 Taurus today. It seems there a little more room on the passenger side of the 1999 than the 2000, requiring me to remove the coolant overflow tank to get the bolt in/out of the alternator, and still was tight getting wp in and out.
@enginepaul80998 жыл бұрын
Instead of removing that lower cover to get at the drain plug, I used a hole saw to cut a hole. Now I can drain it easily without any problem. I didn't read all the replies, but using distilled water with anti-freeze will prevent further rust problems.

Thanks for the video. My fiancé's 2000 Taurus is leaking just above where the bottom rad hose goes to pump. The serpentine tension pulley is froze up, I have or should say had the perfect size star socket but it stripped smooth, the bolt is still ok. It's on there good, real good. I don't know how you got it with a hex.
@gunlover06710 жыл бұрын
Thanks, will flush it out good, don't want to do it over again the belt tension bolt was rounded out I tried to do what you did by using 1/4 inch tool but it was bad. The pulley bolt that you use the 15 mm tool to loosen the belt was also rounded off . I just got it off today and will be putting it back on today my water pump fins was like yours rusted out ,just spining in the water not even circulating it. So thanks for your vid it helped me out brother.
@scannerguy196810 жыл бұрын
Yes, make certain it's flushed good. The one I installed is already worn out and I thought i had it flushed good enough. I'm waiting until no more freezing nights and going to have to run water through each day for a couple weeks and keep draining before I change it out again. One thing I think would help is a rare earth magnet in the overflow. have one in there now and you wouldn't believe the amount of metal that keeps sticking to it. Have to throw a vid on showing it.

Yeah gonna have to change the water pump on my 98 taurus I think, I changed the Thermostat and Heater Core still vary little heat , whats funny is the car will never come close to overheating, in fact it seems to act like the Thermostat is stuck open, Only time I get ok heat as at 3k rpm and the temp gauge gets cooler until the Thermostat closes. Wish I had a garage this time of year lol.

@shanec44412 жыл бұрын
Most expert mechanics do not recommend using RTV with those paper gaskets. Use one or the other but not both. Research this for more. Typically when you change the water pump, the timing chain seal will go bad. That is notorious for the Ford 3 liter V6. Mine leaked a little then about 6 months later the timing chain seal went and had to pull the pump off again

This video actually helped me a lot. This is my first water pump replacement and following you directions made it look like I've done this over a hundred times. But I lost you for a second. I believe that's the power steering pump. It's either low on fluid, fluid is old, or it's just worn out. These power steering pumps tend to make noise as they get older. Mine is original but isn't that loud and you almost can't hear it when it is warmed up.

Helladamnleet Originally thought that on the comment from a year ago., suffered through the cold until spring as stated whenever someone would drive it. Then decided to change out late spring. Pump was good. The heater core plugged up tight again is why no heat hardly. My guess is will have to put a new core in if it does it again after flushing. Impellers were still good on pump. hobosarah Some replace the overflow and radiator then flush. If it is real bad I would keep running water during the summer and flushing once a week until It looked good. Also I dropped a decent sized magnet into the overflow and pull it out and clean it off then drop back in a few times. But this won't get rid of aluminum filings.
