Ford Transit MK6 Gear Selection Problem Gear Cables Or Gearbox Selector

In this video I have a problem with my Mk6 Ford Transit. It will not go into reverse gear and is stiff going into 1st and 2nd gears. I had a new clutch, master and slave cylinders within the last couple of years but this problem has just developed. I looked online to try and find out how to adjust the gear cables. I remove the gear selector and this is how I fixed the problem.

Some of your Vids must save people (Those willing to have a go) an absolute fortune in Labour costs Martin, plus your paying forward your knowledge in the form of handy tips. I wouldn't deny a proper Mechanic his charge, but it's not just money saving, it's the challenge of doing it yourself and resolving the issue that's the really satisfying feeling! Top man Martin, you really are a community minded chap!!

Thanks bud. A garage would have thrown the part away and fitted a new one at great expense. No one repairs stuff any more and it's the customer who has to foot the bill so a saving like this is worth passing on. Cheers Martin

Thanks so much for a very helpful video, it has sorted the problem on my son-in-laws Transit, and he was stuck and couldn't reverse. We got it into reverse manually then did a proper job to stop it happening again. Your very clear and easy to follow video was a huge help, you're a good guy, many thanks again. Steve.

Something to note Just had a 1,8 connect do this wouldn’t go in gear some times then all of sudden lost Al gears removed box mounting everything checked all linkages the top shaft that holds both cables on could move freely no gears whatsoever almost like it snapped I removed it and found that there’s a pin between the top part of the shaft with the cables and the bottom with the gears this pin had snapped not sure if anyone else has this problem I’m either going to try find another pin but to be honest I’m probably going to weld the shafts as one as no need to take them apart anyone had this before?

I had the problem were I could not select 1,2,4th and reverse. I have used 1/2 a can of WD40 and managed to be able to get it though all the gears with the engine off. As soon as I start the engine I have exactly the same problem. I managed to get the van home and to reverse it in by stopping engine and selecting reverse before restarting it. Has anyone any idea why it would work with the engine off but not with it running as it seems very strange? Brilliant video and thank you for uploading it - without this I would have been straight on to the RAC to recover it. Top Man

Hi mate , great video , my mk7 has this problem it’s like I had to learn this individual gearbox but it’s like the shifters don’t align with the gears and I go to put it in first but the stick will drop and hang to the right ? But I can pretty much do a whole circle motion with my gear stick while it’s in gear … really weird as I have good clutch hydraulic pressure and it doesn’t seem to want to slip out of gear it just all happens through my stick and shifting is a nightmare sometimes if I ain’t concentrating on where to exactly angle the gear stick , do you think this is my problem mate ? Thanks!

On the MK6/7 the selector bolt can come out or sheer off, lodge between the case and crown wheel and punch a hole through the casing. If ever you lose gears on the stick and it's all floppy on the FWD transits, STOP. Don't drive it. Get it lifted.

Managed to sort mine out by simply squirting the vertical shaft with WD and oil, as eventually some will find it's way down. It's probably a scrap yard job next year, so I don't want to do anything more than I have to. I have just done a front spring and am still recovering from that.

Hi young man I stripped my gear selector a couple of years ago , on the middle of the shaft level with the bolt that drops out or breaks there is a small caged bearing , it is like a tube with micro ball bearings. The whole thing breaks up, at first it gets sticky the bearings cut rings in the shaft then they start dropping into the box and start chewing up the DIF The bearing would probably be better replaced by a bronze bush with inner and outer grooves to pick up oil splashed from the gearbox. All the parts are cheap from ford. The guy at Ford printed out the exploded view for me from his computer. It is common to find the bolt that falls out secured with a spot of weld because when it drops out it often gets trapped under the diff and punches a hole in the box BE LUCKY

De Ja Vue watching this video. This was the first of the many common problems with the MK6 I had to deal with. As everybody on the forums described, water getting past the seal rusting the roller bearings/shaft. Parts were quite cheap from Ford. Mine just suddenly started sticking, limped it home 30 miles in 3rd gear. Had to slip the clutch up to traffic lights very slowly. Luckily it was late in the evening so not much traffic on the road. I've had all the other common problems and fixed them myself, just the blasted rot now. Re tools, they suggested getting a long wobble bar so I did. Wonder just how many of us have gone through this? THANKS FORD.

So in the future you might get away with dumping some WD40 down the shaft without removing it from the engine. Your other half can sit in the driver seat and go from 1st to reverse over and over again while you empty a can of WD40 into the shaft. What do you think?

Good video Martin. Ford would replace cables 1 by 1 and then charge for that whole linkage. You would think they should have put a rubber boot over that to protect the shaft from the environment. Great fix and low cost. Snowing hard here all day and night. 10-15 cms.

Thanks Gordon, always enjoyed fault finding. If I would have relied on the forums, I would have wasted money on the gear cables.

Is this the same problem if its hard to put in second gear from first gear (in 80% of time) and when you do it makes gear grinding noise?

martin iv had to do this a couple times had the mec ontop of the gearbox the neddle bearing seized the same as u on the shaft most of the time u can get away without taking it off iv always make sure on every mk6 transit i wd40 tht shaft up on every now and then if you dnt use the van often rain water can drip and work its way down to the shaft and seize the bearing iside also always worth oiling up the cables on the underside of the van on gearstick end makes a smooth gear change 👍 good video :)

It's a common problem I think Harry, I put grease around the top of the shaft as well but I was lucky to catch it before the bearings were shot. Cheers Martin

Top video Martin . I'm having same problem with my transit connect 2009. Only 62000 miles had a clutch 10000 mile's ago. Funny I lubricated moving parts was all okay for 2 weeks then started again. Lubricated again but not worked this time do you reckon take mine out n do what you did pal. Glad it's worked for you it's doing my swede in as don't want to replace cables n selector 🥴🔨. Or pay to have gearbox removed 🙈🔨

Yes, the shaft is probably corroded so a good clean is necessary. Not had any more probs with mine.
