Late reply here.. sorry. I’ve had both, with over 150k miles on each. Both vans have issues, as well as bright spots. I am SHOCKED that I enjoy the evrday driving with the Ram over the Transit. I’m going to compare apples to apples here (RWD Ford vs FWD Ram). Again, I love BOTH platforms. But wanted to note some advantages I’ve encountered with the Ram, as many folks are probably still “on the fence”. 1. For a “normal RV style build, one has to go with the extended roof Ford. High wind and interstate travel makes for a constant ship sail effect on the Ford. Can be rectified with after market suspension kits. But this needs to be noted. NOT cheap. 2. Front wheel drive in the Ram makes for amazing turning radius. AND drives fine in snow without chains/snow tires. 3. You touched on the wider platform of the Ram.. I will add: when comparing similar lengths, I can build more living space in a 21 foot Ram than I can build in a 22 foot Ford. It’s not even close. Not only side to side.. but length wise. This is due to so much of the Ford length being taken up by the driver cab area. That ugly squished face of the Ram puts driver/ cab more forward,, leaving you with more living space in a shorter van. 3. I’m a “fridge guy”.. I often travel,for 3-4 months ata time. I can easily put a 7-8 cubic foot fridge in a Ram, with room for a huge drawer/storage underneath. Ford curved/narrow walls just don’t allow for such a thing. Meh, I hate little dorm fridges. But that might not be a deal breaker for many. 4. The lack of drive shaft going to the rear allows for an amazing amount of tank storage underneath the Ram… even a spare tire. I’m able to keep my tanks (heated) under the van on a Ram.. saving me precious build space by NOT keeping them inside. 5. Gas mileage. Hands down winner is the Ram, by over 3-5 mpgs. And now, with the revamped 9 speed transmission on the Ram, I’m running 20 mpgs on the interstate in warm weather, doing 70 plus all day. That’s adds up when you are on the road for tens of thousands of miles. 6. I’m only six feet…as you noted, going from cab to living area is not advisable with the high ceiling storage area on the Ford. In fact, I couldn’t even consider adding one to my current Transit. For extended part timing or full timing, this lack of storage space is a deal breaker for me. Please note, I still own both. AND if AWD/4WD vans are your priority, then a AWD Transit vs. a AWD Sprinter conversation is more than appropriate. In fact, my Transit is an Overland AWD build. And I love the damn thing, even with all its annoyances. But for full time van life… or even weekend warrior camping, I’d take that ugly Promaster everyday, and twice on Sunday. Sorry ‘bout the long ramble. 🤘

Thank you so much for your awesome input. Several points that are very important that I didn't even think of adding (drive shaft). That's so awesome that you have both the Transit and the Ram. I am definitely a fan of the fridge over the chest. It's just not worth the hassle of food hunting. Enjoy those vans and thanks again for taking the time to leave an educated, helpful response. 😊

Thank you so much for the Additional detailed comparison I truly was leaning towards the pro master as a 5 foot 5 tall, single solo, female on crutches, and Power scooter. It sounds like I may have to get the seats adjusted to lower them and have them swivel to assist with transitioning from the cab to the living area and to also allow my feet to touch the floor, right? I thought the all wheel drive was the best for not getting stuck in the sand, mud, snow, and that they all wheel drive is better for roof trains. I would love to have all of the extra bells and whistle’s, and I most definitely need to have the solar panels installed on top of the roof. I am literally praying to God for a helper, partner, friend, or kingdom spouse who Knows about how to convert a van into a daily living camper as I need to be on the move. It can be difficult When being when being a solo 58 years of age female, who’s healing from injuries with Some current/temporary mobility issues. Is it possible to have layers of sleeping space like a bunkbed with queen size on the bottom and top? For the grandkids. And no one ever mentions the shower and the toilet areas, or is it better to just do a makeshift/ portable toilet/Shower to illuminate plumbing for water disposal? Should I be concerned about a sink, and is it really necessary to have a refrigerator because I really don’t know if a cooler would suffice with being so small? ❤Thank you in advance for anyone who can advise me on this situations , God bless you!

For the record we have a low roof Promaster on the 136” chassis. We bought a built out van during the start of covid, so we went with what was available and decided to go with one already built, as finding parts & labor at that time was challenging. Despite my reluctance of buying a RAM product, it has been better than I expected. We did have some electrical gremlins, but that was due to how the dealer failed to properly reattach the front ground cable during some suspension mods. That has been sorted out. I’m 5’8” and have to duck inside the low roof, but my significant other is fine. The ducking isn’t so bad as normally I’m moving from one seated position to other (seats to bed). The overall clearance height of the LR PM has been great. We have a tall rack with solar panels, and the van is still less than 9 ft. This means we can still go through drive thrus. The builders I’ve spoken with prefer working on the PM as the Transits wall has a bolster at the bottom that you have to build around. As mentioned earlier, the bedding is easier and wider on a PM. I think Ford does a better job with their rear doors in terms of stop points. Fuel economy is better on the Promasters, particularly with the new 9 speed transmission. We’ve been averaging about 18 mpg lifetime, but that includes running our Esbar gas heater during the winter. The Promaster has a built in tap to the gas tank that is accessible in the interior, and the tap will not use the last quarter of the tank (so that your heater doesn’t deplete all of your gas). I like running a petrol heater as there is no separate diesel or propane tank to fuss with. Driver position has more of a commercial feel than the Transit, which feels more like a Ford truck. Certainly less comfortable, but you are also nearly sitting atop the front wheels on the Promaster, which really help seeing during turns in tight situations. FWD reduces the load floor height as been mentioned, but since all of your built weight is at the rear, it can make driving uphill difficult on rough rutted terrain such as a steep washed out mountain road. Either product (RAM or Ford) has a huge dealer network, and critical parts (engines and transmissions) can be easily sourced from other family products. Anecdotally I’m hearing that the Mercedes dealer network is far more fussy, difficult to find locally and backed up work schedules, and restrict parts access to only their authorized MB service centers. YMMV, but I’m seeing brand new Sprinters get stranded due to lack of foresight and commitment in the MB service/supply chain, particularly for some very popular RV builders. And diesel costs / maintenance are negating any mpg advantage.
@JonniesJourney

very good point about the heavy backend going up hill in a FWD. I get right at 16mpg in my 3500 extended. Sometimes I'm happy I can't go through drivethroughs and sometimes i'm like "oh dang" 😂 We steered clear of the diesel for those exact reasons. thank you so much for your awesome comment and great points. safe travels.

Hi Jonnie! I don’t have the problem of my feet not touching the floor in my 1989 Dodge Xplorer 230 XLW, when my passenger seat is turned backwards, bc the floor’s level…’MY’ problem is getting INTO the van through the side door…left half is fake and doesn’t open, but, get this: it has hinges! WTH?! FYI, for the windows in the Promaster not rolling all the way down one can go to most truck stops and buy an arm rest [pretty cheap] that’ll slide down into the window crack…used one for years in my big trucks for 38 years OTR. I have no problem standing up in my van but then again I’m only 5’9” and not that tall…but, I better duck getting into the driver’s seat bc if I don’t I’ll smack my head on the overhead storage area…which I’ve already done several times! Great video as always! Stay safe! ~Jim~

Good thoughts. Thanks for bringing this to everyone’s attention Jonnie. No doubt that Les certainly will move around easier in a Transit. I think people should try to get inside each van platform if they can to get a sense of what they are like before buying. I had the chance recently to look at a number of RV on the three chassis’s. It was definitely beneficial. If the Promaster were AWD it would be near perfect for me but then the Transits gas mileage is worse so it’s a trade off. I’m not tall and the slightly greater width of this chassis makes a difference for me. Friends that have the new 2023 9 speed engine with the bells and whistles love theirs.

In the process of converting a Transit AWD. Just to say that I don't have any regrets at all. The benefit of AWD, as you pointed out, was a huge factor for me. Living in Quebec Canada, the winter driving is challenging. As I build, the lack of room underneath is obvious compare to the Promaster. So if your plan is to use it predominatly in campgrounds in summer condition then the Promaster would be an easier buit for sure. A last point, if you plan a large electrical configuration, well then the Transit has no rival, not even the Sprinter. They have a twin 250A alternator option, dual 12v batteries (not to be used as house batteries though) and multiple user connections points for power from the alternators, ignition sensing etc.

The Promaster has three primary cup holders at the bottom of the center console, but it sits a little low. There are two built into the doors, but they don’t have much retention. I like the way the cup holders are placed on the Transit dash better, as they have easier access just to the side of the instrument cluster.

probable because the one in the Transit is nicer. The transit has on over by the window which is nice. The Promaster has a small one that seems more for the passenger and it is very shallow. but.... it has two down low whick is what most people use. thanks for watching Christie

Yes, it is because the Promster's cup holders are practically on the floor, so you have to bend way down to reach them, but they do hold cups snugly. And yes, I agree the one in the door is practically useless.

Love the comparisons! Questions: the 4" of Transit floor height. Why is it there? Does it equate to 4 extra inches of ground clearance? I was just looking at the Promaster website. Looks like the 2023 might have straight walls now. And they offer "high" and "super high" tops. Sounding like the ProMaster for me. I love AWD, but ProMaster isn't there yet. Better FWD than RWD. Better wider than taller (I'm short). You know I had to play with the Build It feature. $65,000 and I didn't click everything I might want. Highway robbery, I say. Gouging, I say.

I drove a 2021 Transit high top 6 thousand miles from SF, CA to KS roundtrip twice...by way of the I-80 once and the I-10 once. I very much enjoyed driving and sleeping in the transit, and the views out of the front are just amazing. It reminds me of sitting in the cockpit of a Boeing jet because the view is so expansive. Very, very easy to drive, to connect your phone to the vehicle, to park, etc. It requires VIGILANCE driving in crosswinds, and it feels like it's going to tip over on mountain roads if you drive the speed limit. The good news, it has an indicator to tell you when/if you're running the risk of tipping. If you do a lot of mountain driving, like through the Sierra Nevadas driving from San Francisco to Reno, or through the Rock Mountains of San Juan range of Colorado, you need to SLOW DOWN to a few mph BELOW the posted speed limit or run the risk of tipping over. Honestly, I don't think living in a van full-time is really practical, and I've lived full-time in a 7.5" x 13" space for much of the last 8 years. Too much can go wrong. If one person's carelessness or panic causes them to crash into you, your ENTIRE HOME must go in the shop. You really need a home base somewhere. I mean, sure you can shower at the gym...until there is a pandemic that requires lockdown or facilities to remain closed to the public for safety reasons. People think living in a van is "cheaper"...but there are places in the US where you can rent a tiny studio apartment for $500/month, utilities included, and in a reasonably safe neighborhood. In the central US, that even includes parking. Now, you can't do that in most places in California (my state), except maybe Clearlake, but you can do it in many, many states. If you're going to live full-time in a van, you better have a VERY SOLID AND TRUSTWORTHY SOCIAL SAFETY NET because if the you-know-what hits the fan, you need a place you can go immediately, qhwew you can store your personal belongings indefinitely, and stay there for as long as it takes to get your van back in working order....and that is IF your greed-driven insurance company doesn't decide to TOTAL your vehicle simply because it's cheaper for them to do that rather than repairing and restoring it. It is *very challenging* to find an insurer who will *adequately* insure a vehicle you've sunk that much money into. It's all well and good UNTIL someone WITHOUT INSURANCE causes an accident, or steals it when you're off doing something for several hours. You have to truly consider the FULL REALM OF POSSIBLITIES and have a plan for what you're going to do in each one of them. The more hours you spend on the road driving, the more RISK you have of someone else crashing into your home on wheels...or road debris getting hit by another vehicle and flying up and hitting YOUR vehicle. I very much LOVE the freedom of hopping in a vehicle and just taking off for a road trip somewhere beautiful...but full-time living? It's definitely more for the young who have parents to fall back on. The more and more you watch van lifers, the more of them you see get rid of their vans and start building homes...for just these reasons. Sometimes a van lifer will get lucky, and their vehicle will catch fire or get destroyed just after they've purchased a dwelling, and they have somewhere to live. What is truly awful, is when you see one destroyed, with all the person's worldly belongings in it, and they have to start over. Again, it's lovely as a weekend, seasonal, or vacation adventure, or for college kids who have a parent's stable, safe home where they can keep things you should NOT take on the road with you, like birth certificates, and other identity documents, mementos from school, etc.

TTHX SO MUCH FOR BRINGING ALL THIS UP. In my experience the vehicles are different enough so that when you know just what factors are essential for you the decision makes itself. So if you must have 4WD/AWD a Promaster is out. If you must have an 18 ft. high roof van the Transit is out (and the Sprinter as well). Interior height varies across all vans--even their high roof versions differ. I'm 6'1" and can stand up in a Promaster high roof--just. These are just some of the factors. For example, in our case we live in a condo complex and can't easily part anything longer than 18 ft. near our unit, and we do a lot of driving--and parking--in town and in public campgrounds with tight access to parking pads at campsites. And as I said I'm 6'1" and need to be able to stand inside the van. That mandated a Promaster. The Transit's great features in some other areas were irrelevant because Ford doesn't make an 18 ft. high roof model. Your needs are probably a different priority stack. My point is that for most people the notion that you actually have a choice between the 4 modern vans currently sold in America is an illusion.

If I ever buy a Transit, I'd buy the mid height version. Offers 6 feet pre floor and ceiling, enough for me and not too high overall outside height. I think the Ram is awkward climbing in and out the front seats. Maybe it's still that cab forward thing. I prefer front wheel drive. The number 1 reason to buy the Transit? Not a Dodge. I know what you are saying about the promaster transmission issues. I honestly know of anyone that has actually had an issue, though. I have also not heard of eletrical problems. I'm curious, does anyone else have the problem of the front wheels spinning a bit when you start up at a stop sign? I try to go extra easy on the gas pedal, but if the tires hit the paint, or I'm turning, they tend to spin a tiny bit... And very uneven tread wear? As in the front tires wearing much quicker than the rear? I bought my 2019, 1500, 136 low roof used with 10,000 miles on it. The front tires were worn quite a bit more than the rear. I only have 32,000 on it now and almost need to replace the front tires. I have rotated them, but then read that the better treads should be in the rear, even on front wheel drive vehicles.. I don't have a LOT of weight in my build, (no solar, no electrical, or plumbing) but I'm actually considering adding some weight to the front, somehow...
@JonniesJourney
@JonniesJourney Жыл бұрын
Mine doesn't spin but the front definitely wore faster. On the front wheel drive the left is the one that spins, try easing up on the gas when taking off. 🤷‍♀️

Honestly I think you will hear arguments for both. Sprinter is bt far the hardest because of deisel motor.
