Former XE Falcon owner. Sir John Wright, your excellent Thundering GT article in Wheels Jan 1983 said it best. In the ESP, the V8 performance was released with embarrassing ease. For me, used as a tow car and family hack for 8 years, it is a sadly missed car from my stable.

I got a 1983 XE S Pak in 1994 - 4 speed manual. The 5 speed was pretty rare to find.

Beautiful car, smooth, comfortable, powerful and bloody strong 💪... Not like the rubbish they’ve got going these days, you go over a bump; or a pothole and the thing falls apart!!

Actually the watts link rear end was problematic for bump steer throughout its use which became more obvious from the EA onwards with the better front end. I understand from a suspension expert that the trailing arms were too short, presumable for packaging reasons. I’d still love to own that 351 manual ESP though.

Initially growing up I liked the XF - esp the unique tail light design which I thought looked the best. But over time however the E became more appealing - particularly the front end which I thought looked more elegant and refined coupled in an S pack.

Top car. I owned a beaut 1982 Fairmont Ghia with a 4.9litre V8 fitted with 650 Holley and headers. Metallic charcoal. Sold it 1992 to an enthusiast for $16K.

Hi Jeff, thanks for your comment. That's right, the Ford XE Falcon is definitely up there and proud to say that it was Australian made! - Andres.

While these are great nostalgic intrest. It does my head in when an owner trys to talk up how great and smooth they are. Its plain horrible to drive compared to a modern car, thats a fact. Just enjoy it for what it is.

Fair point, but the higher spec cars, ESP variants were great cruisers. Rust was a big problem with these cars.
