Top Filters I Have seen So far Aftermarket: Purolator Boss Wix Xp Napa Platinum - Same as Wix Xp Fram Ultra Synthetic Ford Racing Aimsoil Out Of All The OEM Filters - I've still still got a lot more to cut open so please be patient Motorcraft - Hands Down Hyundai Kia - Decent Quality Ac Delco low grade cotton type ends along with right next to stp and Fram Mid Grade Aftermarket - Wix and Napa Gold Purolator - Same as the 2 above one not better than the other Come in next Bosch and Penzoil standard Fram orange can is the worst by far but it's a cheap economical filter shouldn't be driven the 10k on the filter IMO Only 3k maybe 5k max - lots of people have had failures with this filter from what I hear I've never personally seen it but I think they're running the filter too long
@redpaw403 жыл бұрын
The Napa Platinum is actually a little better then the wix, because its bypass valve is at the top of the can just like fords and not at the bottom of the can like everyone else. But I still like wix xp heavy duty filters the best. It's always seemed like the best balance between quality and price. If i would rank them from a quality aspect, it would be 1. Napa Platinum 2. wix xp heavy duty 3. Purolator Boss 4. Regular wix xp and the Fram Ultra Synthetic seemed similar in quality 5. Aimsoil is just a rebranded royal purple filter, that they have pay them the licensing rights to use there filter.

I put wix xp with fram ultra synthetic, not the regular wix. wix makes two xp versions, a regular and a heavy duty. the heavy duty one is made for trucks that tow and carry large loads, and so are made a little taller and are have thicker mesh backing and can to handle the increased pressure. similar to there racing filter but a little bigger. also, I am not saying that the fram is a bad filter, in fact I use it on many of my fleet light duty trucks, but the heavy duty ones get a wix xp heavy duty filter, and my busses get a wix dx filter. I mite of forgot to mention, i am one of three shop heads, at a school district bus barn.

I just found this out. I already bought a small stockpile of Purolator filters separately but if they are going to give me a free filter for oil I already need then it looks like I will never use up my surplus filters which are already rated up to 20k miles.
@krisswolf20112 жыл бұрын
Does the Purolator Boss spin freely on for you? When I did my first ever oil change, I used a Mobile1 that was suppose to be compatible with my car. I did “as tight as possible with my bare hand” and didn’t check it. Turns out there was still a gap about 5mm, resulting in an oil spill when I started up the car to check for leaks. I used the Fram UltraSynthetic several times, it spun freely on all the way until the gasket touched the engine. For my last oil change, the store sold out of fram UG, so I got a Purolator Boss. It was same as the Mobile1. Hand tight still had a gap. But since now I know to double check for that, I just used a strap-style oil filter wrench and forced it to fit all the way down. Is that normal?
@1PotatoeMasher12 жыл бұрын
@@krisswolf2011 sounds like the filter isn’t optimized for the application. If it flows well and doesn’t leak, it works but if it also fits well it should be simple reassuring feel and flush fit while spinning it on. Maybe there is a better part number for your engine. What engine and part number do you have?
Thanks for having gone to the expense and trouble of this whole series on oil filters. I've learned quite a bit.

If you notice on the Fram extra guard filter, the black sealer at the ends of the filter media really does the job, they just push the fiberboard end caps into the black sealer, which I think Fram calls “Plastisol”. I know people don’t like to believe it, but that Plastisol stuff is very tough. Thank you for making this rather expensive video. Good stuff!

Rating filter performance as done here by pleat counts, weight and how hard they are to tear apart indicates nothing as to differential pressures, contaminant capacity, micron rating etc. Just a minute number of the typical things filter performance parameters are tested upon.
@RetirednbrokeinPa3 ай бұрын
At least one Japanese filter maker just uses the “plastisol” stuff and doesn’t bother with the cardboard. The filter seals around the center core anyway. The cardboard does very little to nothing anyway. The filter material is more important than the end caps. Trust me. Just take a look at any of the non drain back valve Mazda filters and you’ll see what I’m referring to. The Purolator Boss is an Impressive filter.

The Fram folks must know that the end caps must get the least abuse and pressure. Or else the millions and millions they've used over the years, would of brought many lawsuits, you'd think. It is definitely sufficient for your 3500 mile OCI and pretty good quality motor oil.. A buddy of mine uses them for engine clean ups, with a kerosene/tranny fluid mix or MARVEL Mystery Oil, says they are as good as what the Monkey Lube places put on the cars... And when he cuts them open, never has seen a cardboard end cap failure and sometimes they are loaded with sludge. Most folks have no idea what's on thier cars, they just pay the $40 plus bucks for a basic oil and a basic filter and hope the guys don't try and upsell them too hard!....Good Luck;Jethro

Meets or exceeds OEM specs, that's what I look for when I buy a filter. I have looked at the specks on some filters for old cars I've had and you buy one with the same threads and footprint that was longer so obviously had more filter media area. I usually just go with the original size and change it around 3K miles. I write the date and miles on the lid of the carton and stick it in the sunglasss holder or glove box. I once got a new Fram spin on filter and found the gasket missing when I opened it that required a trip back to the store to get a replacement. .

Hey, I believe that all the high mileage filters are just a marketing ploy by the filter industry. I believe that the high mileage claim is related to the filter media being able to withstand the heat of operation or service life of the filter, not the ability of the capacity of carbon, sludge and other contaminants. The example I give is the K&N Air Filter, guaranteed for a million miles, but recommends that it be cleaned and serviced every ten to fifteen thousand miles. The thing about oil filters is they cannot be serviced only replaced. When a filter becomes so dirty and stopped up it can filter no more. I have a 2015 F150 pickup with the 5.0 engine. It has an oil service monitor in the electronics that can be checked. I am not sure, but I believe this service life percentage is related to the pressure differential through the oil filter. The oil pressure from the pump is 60psi and the after flowing through the new filter is 60psi. When the filter starts filtering, it also slowly starts to plug and through its service the oil pressure and volume leaving the filter begins to go down. Say the oil filter inlet has risen to 70psi to keep the outlet pressure at 60psi. When the pressure differential gets to a given value, the filter and oil must be changed. In industrial maintenance you change filters much more often than you change oil. You are dependent on oil analysis taken weekly as far as oil changes go due to the volume of in each piece of equipment.

The trade off for maximum filtering would be reduced flow rates. At what point does the reduced flow rate begin to affect engine lubrication?
@antonisautos87043 жыл бұрын
Based on the fact that most full flow filters on the market filter to 20 or 30 microns. Less than that and you will need a much larger filter for the same flow. A lot of cars don't have the space for that these days. They do sell filter bypass kits that have an adapter that goes where the filter mounts. Transfers oil through lines then through the bypass and full flow filter somewhere else. I have the amsoil bypass kit. The 2 micron filter is quite large. Nearly a foot long and 8 inches in diameter.

I use a Bosch Premium 3330 on my Harley Sportster 1200. Never had a problem in 12k Miles. You need to check the Micron Rating.

@@FordBossMe The Harley Standard Filter is Rated for 40. Bosch is Rated for 20. Mine is a 18 Model with a Pressurized Filter. Not like the Older Return Line Filter setup. Only runs with 12 PSI. High Volume Pump.

what are your thoughts on K&N filters?
@FordBossMe3 жыл бұрын
From what I understand everybody loves them but I'm going to cut one open soon it's ordered and on its way

If you get the chance check out mighty oil filters

Like your info video except use the better Fram filter XG (xtra guard) that filter has metal caps, much better media and backing. The regular frams are cheap and I will not use. Keep up the good info your passing on to your viewers.

What do you think of oil filter magnets? Are they a good idea?
@LoveClassicMusic02053 жыл бұрын
They certainly can't hurt. Just make sure you take them off before you throw the old filter away.

You ever use the lab analysis companies for oil ?

I will soon

The more pleats the more flow, less chance of the bypass opening unless it used to long. Synthetic media has more chance of a true absolute micron.

Is it save to use mobile 1 oil 0w-20 full synthetic oil with ac delco filter.
@FordBossMe Жыл бұрын
Sure it is but I'd rather use pennzoil Ultra Platinum or Valvoline Advanced Over Mobil
