Tsuba School: Hosa Kusa - Recreating a Modern Classic, Part 1- Introduction

Tsuba School projects are follow-along online classes which deal with all aspects of Japanese Metalsmithing. This project focuses on how to re-create a Modern Classic Tsuba - 'Hosa-Kusa' originally designed and made by Ford Hallam. The project is divided into several bite-size parts, each of which are available here in the playlist.

Mr. Hallam. I don't normally comment on KZbin videos but I have to in this instance. I've been blade smithing for a few years now with the goal to produce quality hand forged Japanese-style blades. I'm not going to kid myself and think that I'm ever going to be able to create the same level of quality you get from formally trained Japanese craftsmen, but I want to create every aspect of my blades. I've gotten pretty good at the forging part, and can do well with the wood working parts, but creating the art work is foreign to me. This course is a blessing. I've haunted your KZbin channel for years, but never thought I had the skills or patience to tackle my own tsuba. Watching this series has changed those thoughts. Thank you for taking the time to produce this series and thank you for sharing. I've got goosebumps just thinking about trying to follow along with you.

Can I just say how grateful I am for you taking the time to make these videos. I appreciate tsubas as pieces of art like no other, and you add so much more to my appreciation. Thank you Ford, please continue to put up these videos. Apart from the ‘Making of’ type ones, perhaps you could do one on the tsubas you found most interesting or best executed, and why? I’d be interested which types or designs you admire most.

I find a great way to prevent smoothing out the backside is to use a piece of leather under the piece.
