I have a 5.4 Triton 2004 Ford F150 I replace the power steering pump and now I'm leaking motor oil somewhere around the power steering pump I did not have all the bolts to put the new power steering pump back on so I did not know if all could be coming out of one of the boat holes or where could it be coming from thank you

Just broke my install tool and I’m broke so stressed right now, really appreciate you going out your way to inform us
@Maxim.ID4HO2 жыл бұрын
I broke two of those loaner tools from the parts store. It busted inside the pump with the separately purchased pulley partially installed. All three items rendered useless. Yesterday, I bought my own cheap version of the tool, but after seeing this, I bought the OTC tool he recommended. I'll wait on the OTC tool to arrive and just eat the cost on the cheap tool, because I don't want to buy another pump and pulley. Those cheap tool sets seem to be almost a one-time use. If you can find one with the pulley installed, they are $243.00. This is such an easy job, but it's filled with needless hurdles.

Hey guys, I had to do this same job on a chevy blazer and It took like 5 attempts to take pully off or on. I ended using a propane torch to heat whole pully and I could get 4 or 4 wrench turns then reheat repeat. Make sure shaft and pully have no Burr or scrapes on it. Some cars we work on are too much bigger pain.

I just replaced my steering pump recently (03/23) and the video information is still quite valid and good. However a few things not mentioned is the plastic/teflon o-ring. It is not pliable, meaning if you stretch it too far it will not regain its original shape. Also meaning when tightening the high pressure side of the hose into the pump with the plastic/teflon ring may not get sealed correctly. I , luckily, was able to get a good seal even though the ring was loosely fitted. No leaks after 3 days.. But will keep an eye on it. The other thing that should be mentioned is the tool for removing and pressing the pully should be high quality. While the "Harbor Freight" - made in china, did the job. I had improvise to get the job done. I ended up having to use a hose clamp rather than the provided sleeve due to the fact there was so much slop and play that it didnt allow the collars to stay in place when trying to take it off, which in turn made the tool fail in the end. And as he suggested @8:45 the installer bolt breaks quite easily, especially when taking the pully off. I broke the part 2 times, first time when taking the pully off and second time when I pressed the pully too far and had to pull the pully away form the pump body without the pully rubbing against the pump. In essence, because of the low quality tool I used it took a 3 hour job and made into a 2 day job just because I wanted to save money on a tool I knew I probably wouldnt use again.

@39knights4 жыл бұрын
I know that when putting on pressed wheel bearings there is a suggestion of putting them in the freezer to shrink them and make installation easier. Have you ever tried placing the pulley in an oven so it expands and would slip on much easier? Don't do enough to know myself but would be interesting to find out. Also I've been told that putting grease or anti-seize on the threads of pullers will lengthen their useful life.

Awesome video, very clear and this is the same power steering pump I've got on my 2003 Ford Crown-Victoria. Could you please also make a video on how to take out a broken end part of the installer bolt which unfortunately ended up being stuck in the pump axle? I think I probably had bought on amazon a good quality set, but I shouldn't have used the impact wrench for the install process 😢

Last year I did my phasers and all and changed idlers, tensioner, have new alternator, new water pump, etc. Now there is an intermittent squeal like a tensioner from the power steering pump side of the bay. Pulled the belt and everything is smooth and thought the play meant this was the issue but now I'm not sure. Thoughts? Thanks for all your videos too the phaser one was super helpful!

Didn't notice the end play until I was putting the belt back on. Thought for sure I was in trouble. Thanks for saying that it's normal
@jamesengland7461 Жыл бұрын
He already mentioned don't heat the pulley. Plastic pulleys expand and contract VERY LITTLE with temperature changes, so you'd be wasting your time, and heat would likely damage the pulley. The small diameter of the pump shaft likely means that even leaving your pump in your deep freeze overnight won't shrink the shaft enough to make a noticeable difference either, but at least that won't hurt anything.

I’m following your excellent four-part timing chain videos and the last thing I need to do is to remove the power steering unit before I can pull off the timing cover. (I already found an incredible amount of broken plastic chunks from the timing chain guides in my oil pan so I know I am on the right track. My pickup tube was so clogged with plastic debris that if it were one of my coronary arteries I’d be on a table at the ER with paddles on my chest and someone shouting “Clear”). I was able to get the lower bolt loose but I’m having a heck of a time getting the top front bolt to break free and I’m afraid that I will round off the bolt if I try any harder. Is it possible to just remove the pulley and leave the rest of the power steering unit in place to get access to remove the timing cover? It looks like there is only a single 13mm bolt behind the pulley. Thank you for your excellent videos.

Today for the first time I noticed a squealing sound when I turn the wheel to the right. But it ONLY happens when I turn to the right, and am moving. If I’m parked, there’s no noise. Also, if I turn the wheel ALL the way to the right until it can’t turn anymore, the squealing stops. Immediately I thought of the serp belt, but that doesn’t make sense to me because if it were the belt, I would think it would squeal whether I turn left OR right, and also when I’m parked and turn the wheel. Could it maybe be the power steering pump? But again, the left/right issue is throwing me off. The other thing is maybe it’s the steering column itself. But it sounds like squealing, not grinding.
