Yes, you read that correctly, I purchased a 2021 with the 3.5L, had it for 6 months and 10k miles. I traded it in for another 2021 with the 5.0. I see worse MPG with the 3.5 v the 5.0 by a lot. The 2021 started having shifting/stuttering issues. I didn't even want to take any chances and with the current market got what I paid for it as a trade. I'm glad I found this video. I've been considering one of the new Mavericks but being a former dealer tech I also know better than to buy the first year of anything. Plus it's just a horrible time to buy right now anyway. Not to mention anything new is very problematic now. It may not be for some people but for others the newer vehicles are a nightmare. I have a 2014 Mazda CX-5 that just hit 100,000 miles. I bought one because I was a Mazda tech and thought the newer Mazdas were a very reliable option compared to their competitors. Ever since I hit 100,000mi it's been one repair after the other. The timing cover had to be resealed twice, I've replaced the valve cover gasket about 5 times and it still seeps oil, it's gone through 2 drive belt tensioners, the rear calipers and brake hoses, and the most recent one is the gas tank ROTTED OUT on the top and started leaking fuel everywhere and is currently still an ongoing repair (it's a long story). Yes it's 7 years old, yes it has 100,000mi on it, but in my opinion it should not have these issues yet.
@andrewt92042 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 7 years even in the rust belt seems early to have that many issues. I had a 2008 RAV4 V6 for over 10 years with 200k miles living in Minnesota. I had 0 problems when I traded it in and not nearly as much rust as I thought it would have. They did a good job with the undercoating. I had the rear diff go out on me twice in a row due to a bad batch of seals, but that was kind of a one and done thing.

This video has ZERO to do with Mavericks so you shouldn't use it as a standard for all Ford models. The Maverick and the F150 aren't the same platform. There's 100s of millions of Eco boost on the road, if it was a terrible motor, you would most certainly know. Do you research on the model your are interested in in the year range you are interested in.

I had a 2017 F150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost, and I had several major issues before I even hit 30,000 miles. If I let it sit for more than a day, the cam phasers would rattle like crazy for a few seconds after start-up. I also had the plastic oil pan leak - one of the reasons the book has so many hours for that is because the mating surfaces have to be absolutely dry with no oil present at all or you'll have to redo it. Ford's procedure at the time was to let it drain overnight, if I remember correctly, but it could have been 24 hours. Every now and then, the transmission would buck like I was driving a manual transmission and had let the clutch out too quickly - the old eating rabbits phenomenon for those with experience with stick shifts. Oh, and I had the panoramic sunroof and, while mine didn't leak into the cab, it would make an alarming popping noise and jam if I tried to open it without raising it to the vent position first. The dealership fixed most of the issues, but caused more along the way. They took several weeks to do the work and broke the EGR valve while fixing the phasers and oil pan. Plus, they messed up a valve cover gasket so badly the thing was pouring oil out of the engine. I don't regret selling the Ford, but I am stupid or a glutton for punishment as I keep finding myself looking at newer ones, including EcoBoost models.

Similar situation...2012 3.5EB that had cam phasers and chains, as well as several injectors, go at less than 100k km. Just don't buy new. Buy used with at least 50 to 80k miles. By then there should be enough research that tells you if a car, truck, engine, or transmission are proven or not. Buying new, less than 30k mile vehicles doesn't guarantee trouble free miles, front what I've seen. Cars with a few k miles, broken-in & well maintained by the owner already make me feel better because if something was gonna fail, it would have failed by then, or was already replaced by the previous owner.

I’m more of a VW fan at heart and all of the ones I owned are the final model year with all the reliability problems people associate VW with that have been sorted out so my cars have been trouble free.

@@CL-yp1bs the 2ZR-FE is a good engine. Never seen that many fail. The only major issue with these engines is particularly with the E210 Corolla and the CH-R, if the 12v battery runs very low it throws the VVTi system off whack and needs to be re-calibrated. Otherwise the engine will stumble like crazy to a point where it’s undrivable until the re-calibration is completed (or in severe cases the VVTi motor needs to be replaced) so it’s best to check the battery condition frequently.

Leak issues are rampant. Ford will not replace the installed pan until there is a leak, and if the truck is out of warranty, the owner is responsible. This should be a recall issue given Ford’s recognition of the problem, the extent of the problem, and serious nature of the problem according to a number of dealers and mechanics I know.

About 9 minutes in you touch on this issue, but this is a SERIOUS problem in need of recall. The plastic (composite) pan simply doesn’t work over time. FOrd already has a resolution to the problem. I don’t understand how Ford doesn’t take responsibility for this poor engineering.

I have one of these. Most issues were found and covered under warranty. One, which was very frustrating and little solutions published online was the temperature rising on this truck motor. I had since new and right after the phaser work was done temps would appear above gauge. The dealer claimed they did not observe the issue. Fans were running constantly. I replaced the 195 degree thermostat. No difference. Found little heat coming off the radiator and decided it might be a circulation issue. Replaced the radiator and no difference. One thing that started to become more apparent was it got worse when towing anything (1,100 lb trailer ) but even without towing I started seeing it occur in colder temperatures. The colder the ambient temp the more I could predict it occur. I surmised the water pump was the issue and impeller was slipping on the shaft made worse by cold air on pulley and shaft and hotter coolant internal. I replaced the pump with an aluminum impeller and it’s like brand new again. Fans almost never activated unless a short heat soak occurs after shut down and restart in a couple minutes. Heat is a big cause of many issues with this truck and now the replacement thermostat is a 190 degree from Ford parts. I replaced that now too.

The 07 Tundra had problems as all autos do. I now has 283k, runs great!!!! Regular maint is key for any auto.

My ‘14 3.5 had about 200k on it. Lots of wrenching time like coolant leaks, turbo leaking, vacuum pump leaking, valve cover leaking, 6r80 died at 131k miles, and countless sparkplugs. I want to take the truck to Brian’s shop for timing chain later. This is what I get for “upgrading” from a 3rd gen 4runner with 400k miles

Man that sucks. Makes me feel lucky to be at 150k lol in my Chrysler built truck with only water pump replacement and I need a window switch now . I hope you are having better luck with your next truck.

I have a 2012 F150 with the 5.0. I have had zero issues with it and I'm hearing all kinds of stories of the newer 5.0 V8 leaking oil big time. I'm very hesitant to buy just about any new truck

Even Toyota and Honda have the occasional piles, but it breaks my heart to see American companies constantly turning out crap as if it was expected.

I mean, it is. The big 3 hasn’t made a 1/2 ton truck or regular car worth buying since the early 2000s.

Tundra and Titan are more American than the big 3 anyways... we know how to make good vehicles... buy American made

Thanks for this video and all the rest you do. They have helped me with repairs and make better decisions buying a truck. Now I know to avoid the V8 on the F150 for 2018-2020... I have rough shifting in my 2018 F150 Ltd mostly when very cold (freezing or less) from 3-4th or 5th gear but I'm afraid to take it to Ford for any software updates for fear they will make it worse so I just llve with it when its cold.

Someone has to. Not to mention Ford updates their engines so often it’s hard to keep track, that being said I avoided the ecoboost alltogether

Even though I no better I just couldn’t help myself. I Bought the new Bronco 2.7. Luckily I got mine for MSRP instead of the 15 to 20 K extra. As a precaution I bought the Ford Protect warranty for 125k miles bumper to bumper with rental/ loaner car coverage.

You were smart to get the warranty, if, anything goes wrong, that is when you will be praising your own wisdom.

They should’ve never changed from the Gen 1 ecoboost, but put catch cans on them from the factory. Change oil often, with quality synthetic and use at least 89 octane quality fuel. It’s quite a prerequisite to get reliability.

Im not sure much was changed except for port injection being added…
@ccaamm12 жыл бұрын
The oil catch can would have to run the length of the truck.
@ubeuonly Жыл бұрын
Catch cans and full synthetic oil are totally unnecessary says every manufacturer, if they thought that was necessary for the longevity of the motor and they would make less warranty payouts because of it they would recommend it

Hey So much for the supposed long term research and development by the manufacturers. Excellent video
