Love the work you do Brian. I’m OCD too and I totally agree with you. Cars these days REQUIRE a level of OCD. I did flat rate (crap rate) for a while and it is an absolute tragedy dealer shops and others put such a focus on production. I could not make enough money for the Ford dealer I used to work for but they didn’t care about the customer surveys put my quality at 97-100% I was let go for “being unprofitable”. I sincerely hope the industry realises flat rate died in the 80’s and put a focus on the quality over quantity. Good techs are hard to find.

That’s the problem no one is honest anymore. We’re all human and we do make mistakes. Just admit it and fix it properly. Last year I did an alternator on a Honda CR-V and it’s in a very tight spot. Gotta remove the cooling fans and then wiggle the alternator out. Well I went to remove the alternator and it got stuck, I gave it a hard pull and it put a small hole in the radiator. I was so mad and upset but I called the customer and told him. I’m sorry I damaged your radiator but don’t worry I have a new one coming tomorrow and I will put a new one in for you. She was a little concerned but after picking up the car she was happy that I was honest with her about what happened. I lost money on the job but she has used my services a few more times since.

First thing, thank you so much for your incredibly detailed and thorough knowledge and understanding you've shared. You're #1 and unmatched with this stuff. I finally bought an '07 f150 step side with the 5.4 3v (180,000) and I'm intending on making it reliable with your advice but for now I just want to replace the ring or valve guide in one cylinder without pulling the engine if you think it's feasible. The previous owner never changed the spark plugs and when I did I found why it was smoking and missing. Now with new OEM plugs, the misfiring has ceased but burning oil (and dumping into exhaust pipes) has not. Number 3 cylinder was the only damaged plug that might have damaged the ring or valve guide? to cause this and I'm a traveling electrician with my family and just hoping to open it up and replace whatever will stop the smoking til I get the time to upgrade my oil pump and maybe timing chain kit. I just want your thoughts on how feasible this is without pulling the engine.?

I like watching your videos. I've been a Ford tech since 2004. My department is transmissions. Time and technology has changed a lot since. I rather dig and dig until finding the cause of concern. When you are on commission it's getting hard to make money. Managers at dealerships want to see number going up but they don't get that you can't rush a job. On top of that, you got new kids that want to be techs. Yet don't have a clue how to hold a wrench and over think on what's wrong with the car. Example: car came in for slow crack. The young very "Master Certified" tech declared engine seized. Put new engine. Same concern. Guy scratch his head. Then a veteran tech walked up to the car, noticed he couldn't spin the AC compressor pulley. Told the kid the AC was seized. Kid replaced the AC compressor. Engine started right up. Ford denied the warranty claim. Manager had to pay for the repair. My point is, we are headed to a point where it's hard to find good reliable techs. Most veteran techs are retiring. I spend time trying to calm a customer and then explain to then what's really wrong with the vehicle. Sadly most customers feel like we are screwing them over again. There are times a feel like giving my two weeks notice and work for the city. Just doesn't feel the same.

It came with the standard E7TE heads found on most trucks instead of the GT40 heads it should have which make a decent amount more power. Both of which were BS to try to get us to leave. Cant trust anybody

I always use OEM parts. For years I got parts from my local auto parts store. When things did no fit properly, or failed, a shop owner said, his shop would only used dealer parts. So I started getting parts from the dealer, what a difference, I hope other people will learn from my experience. By the way I watched several of your videos, very informative and easy to follow. THANKS

Just no way to mimic, replace, or compare, those of us who can Legitimize their Authority on demand. Ladies and Gentlemen thats what makes this channel and others like it so very compelling. Seems to me thr massive majority of society has lost the ability to even Demand that so called Authority Legitimize itself much less even comprehend what I am commenting on.

You are the 🐐 Greatest Of all Time‼️💯 I work at ford myself and see and hear hard working customer tell me similar story’s about taking it somewhere else besides the dealer and they end up with the same issue after paying a hefty repair fee and a shop not being able to fix it . Sucks u ain’t local to me (SoCal) cuz I would refer EVERY customer over to you . What I have done in the past is mention your YT channel to them cuz u either fixed or help identify half the customer concerns they tell me I’ll be like hey I just see a video about that lol . Thank you for ur knowledge and honest work.

Brian I am having all the same problems that alot of Ford f150 owners go through with the 5.4 3 valve I own a 2007 king ranch that has been a good truck I've owned it for 10 years with very few problems , I religiously changed my oil and used full synthetic 5 20 the only thing that I've done to it is the 100,000 mile tune up and transmission flush and I replaced the oil filter housing twice. Not long ago while coming home from work I started to notice a shaking and just overall rough running and and the check engine light came on with the cam phaser bank 1 and bank 2 I replaced both and it ran good for a day then started all the usually 5.4 timing issues and the check engine came back on and it was showing the vct solenoid were bad having the 5.4 l motor that you have to pull the valve covers off to get to the vcts or vvts I opted to take it to the shop they informed me that the truck needed a timing kit installed and it would cost 2500 to 3000 not really having the money but being this is my work truck and with out it I'm dead in the water so off it goes to the shop 2 wks later they tell me it's done and I'm excited to have my truck back so I pick it up and for the first 20 miles it's better than ever, smooth running has lots of power and I'm

Brian is by far the most thorough Ford mechanic out there. You're right... too many shade-tree mechanics out there. And like you, the sound of the tracked vehicles does remind me of times in Iraq.

Wow those idle numbers are off the charts. Amazing they thought it would Cover other problems and not add to the list. Glad you sorted it for them. Nowadays service bulletins and programming fix a LOT of issues!

This is why I'm scared to take my vehicle to a shop. Atleast when I fuck up, I know what I did.

Had a similar misfire low idle on a 06 town car with the pi 4.6 comes in with egr transducer codes and maf and lean codes.... the rebuilder put nonpi heads on (wrong port shape) and siliconed the ports oval to bell..... customer was so fed up with the shop they just had us replace the motor. Some of the stuff we see as techs.......

I get where you are coming from Brian. Too many times i have to diagnose an issue that the customer already spent money on to repair. There is less diagnostics and more parts being changed due to inexperienced "technicians" with 12000$ scan tools and confirmed fixes(mitchell and alldata and identifix) its a great feature but should only be used as a guide. The tool is only as good as the person using it. Thanks for sharing.

Hello, just watched "the lengths' video. Only the second one I've watched, but gotta say I know I'll be watching more. I left my career with Ford in 2010 and can't believe the scan tool layout has not changed ONE BIT! WOW. You called it right on that one. The most challenging concerns will always source from another shops work. These videos take me back. Idle quality was a problem back then. It was explained to me it was because engineers forced to design to accommodate the lowest fuel economy possible. They got away with the roughest they could. Anyway great video. Yeah it is amazing what you'll find getting shipped from other shops.

Thanks for the specific info on the 5.4 3v. I have a 2013 Navigator with 86k miles. Really appreciate the in depth knowledge on troubleshooting issues with this engine. I will benefit tremendously in your insight about these engines when it comes time to address problems when they arise. Thanks
