I learned that lesson the hard way about the performance coils on the modern engines. I had previously worked on old Ford V8 stuff, so it was always a no brainer to go with an aftermarket coil and install electronic ignition in place of points. It always helped with performance and reliabilty. I put Accel coil packs on my '94 Saturn and had one go bad within a year. I saved the originals so I put them back on and it ran great until I sold the car years later. It seems the old days are gone when the aftermarket hot rod stuff works better than the OEM. All the manufacturers have really gotten their act together.

Your videos are extremely helpful beyond words. I bought a used 06 f150 with the 4.6. 70k miles yes i know low miles i was getting misfire on #3. Thanks to you i was able correctly diagnose the problem and prevent catastrophic damage . #3 plug was loose almost welded tip to electrode . Replaced coil in #3( looked like boot was burnt) and replaced all plugs. Discovered that 5 a bit loose as well but only 1/2 turn. Installed new plugs properly gapped with the nickel anti-sieze and torqued to 22 ft. lbs. Good to go . Thanks for all you do . I'm glad i didnt launch a plug that would have really sucked although i watched your vid on inserts and would have tackled it. 🙂

I don't comment on videos often, but this video saved me some money. Luckily I have a scan tool that helped out as well. But the way you explain things and how you go through the process of elimination is outstanding. You have a subscriber for life here! The only thing I did different was move the coil pack in question to an easier location to remove so I don't have to remove the air intake and throttle body when I'm sure it's that coil pack. Great video! 👍

I own a 2012 ford 3.5 ecoboost aswell. Had the exact same problem with the factory coils. After I switched from the factory coils(which 2 went bad) to the msd's, and changed the spark plugs.I have not had a problem. What Doesn't make sense is that the coils would go on cyclinder # 2, just like mine. So what you are telling me is that if he had a factory coil in, the coil would not of went. Something has to be making these coils go bad. So what do i do, Switch my Msd's for factory again? Could anything else make coils go bad? As always, thank you for making these videos. Without your services i would not have to confidence to work on my own truck..

Ran a scan tool to see where the failure was occurring because I had the exact same issue. I ordered plugs that were pre gapped, paid the extra fee for that. When I pulled the plug, the gap was 1 thou over what it should have been, especially running at an elevated boost. Small small detail that caused issues and limp mode for months, but the measurements were so close to what it should have been it was hard to identify. Power balance was definitely helpful.

Thanks for showing how the software helps to diagnose issues, sure is a lot easier than it was back in the 90's. I have had 7 Ecoboost 3.5 in different vehicles, Flex, MKT, and F-150 and found out the one thing they all have in common are plugs that go bad, especially running a mild tune. I found the problem though isn't bad plugs, but the plug design. If you noticed the center electrode is very thin, needle shaped. That thin point actually burns a hole in the ground strap and while the plug may gap properly that crater actually increases the gap enough to cause plug misfires. I also found gaping to .028 when tuned runs a lot better. I got into a habit of taking the plugs out every 30K miles and running a points file across the ground to remove the pit and then gap to .028. I replace the boots at the same time since they tend to cause misfires too. Never had a misfire since adding it to my general maintenance.

Thanks this was helpful to a 2015 F150 3.5 L V-6 that loves to knock. It would be more helpful to us if you tell us the spark plug gap you use, what was the torque you estimate when tightening the plug and confirm the cylinder numbering sequence. I've seen them numbered two different ways now. I am very frustrated with this truck, I only went Ford because the wife wanted it.

Just had pretty much the exact same issue with my 2012 F150 3.5eco. Had check engine light/ sputtering while towing my trailer. Got a cylinder 4 misfire code. Did the coil swap check like shown in this vid. Swapped the suspect coil to cylinder 1 which then gave cylinder 1 misfire. We then got a aftermarket coil to replace it . That worked fine for all of ~500 miles towing before I got cylinder 1 misfire again. Brought it to Ford and they replaced it with a Ford coil. Also had all the spark plugs and coil boots changed out as they were nearing the recommended change times / typical failure mileage. Hope this fix will last for a long time.

I have a 4.6liter V8 on a Ford F150 210k miles. I made some maintenance parts changes changes which included the following: Intake Manifold Fuel injectors PVC valve with new cover Coils, spark plugs, VVT sensors, camshaft position sensors, didn't change phasers. After all those changes, initially it was running a little rough until eventually cleared up on its own. Checked codes and everything cleared up for about a month. This past Sunday, I decided to run the truck on third and second gear going up a mountain just to give those gears a workout on the transmission. Going downhill I put it back on drive and ended up eventually at a stop light and the truck started to vibrate like crazy. I could tell the timing was off, but as soon as I gave it gas, accelerated it stopped vibrating ran fine until my next full stop where it vibrated and died. Had a hard time turning it back on with several stallings. The odd thing was that no codes were given out by the computer the engine light never turned on but the oil spout icon did. I was eventually able to turn it on drive it home. Weirder thing is, got home and it was back to normal no more timing issues it has been several days now, and oil spout icon light turned off and it hasn't happened again. My guess is I have an oil pressure problem and maybe phasers are sticking, and/ or the oil pump needs replacement. Really need your opinion. What do you think? I would appreciate it your opinion.

Hi buddy love your channel. I bought an F150 used 2018 with 15,000 miles on it. At around 18,000 miles I took it to a dealer because I heard a rattle Coming from under the driver side or in the middle of the truck. I told the dealer it’s more prominent on cold starts so I left it at the dealer overnight so they could hear the rattle. The dealer got back to me and told me it was my cam phasers and they had to be replaced luckily they were under warranty so they replaced them. But when I pick the truck up a few days later I still noticed the rattle when I took it back to the dealer and left it overnight I purposely showed up in the morning so I could point out the rattle. Mechanic listened and he told me it was the exhilarate trans pump and it’s a natural characteristic of the pump to rattle for a little bit until it fills with fluid I would think there should be a check valve to keep the fluid in there it doesn’t make sense to me is he right

Brian, I have heard that the 2.7 coils have a little higher output than the older 3.5s. If so would it beneficial to change to the 2.7 coils? Will the 2.7s work on older 3.5s?

How about older vehicles like you mentioned, do you still prefer ford coils over aftermarket? My 4.6 32v has like 3 cracked coils and I am considering buying aftermarket.

Changed coils to another cylinder, and I have still misfires on 6 th cylinder and less but also sometimes on 5 th cylinder. Do you have any sugestions ? All misfires under load, similar to situation like on this video. without load on rpm about 1000 there are no misfires. regards.

Great material!! Kicking myself cuz i just got my new MSD coils and new plugs, ready to install. Just bought a 2012 with 92k on it. Currently have a misfire on #3 and guessing that it's time for original coils and plugs to go bye-bye. Hope my coils do better than your client's.

Working on an '18 Transit 350 with the 3.5 ecoboost. Cyl 2 misfires, not spark plug (replaced all 6 with new OEM plugs) , not coil (swapped with other cylinder and miss did NOT follow), compression good same PSI across all 6 cylinders give or take 10psi, plug not wet with fuel. no trouble codes other than for the misfire. thoughts? carbon build up? local ford dealer told customer $10k to replace cylinder heads and "hopefully" that fixes it. It only misfires under load and generally only after its warmed up some. I can replace complete engine with 6k mile used unit for almost half of dealers "hope" just hate to pull that trigger. its been to 3 shops in town so far....

I had this issue once on cylinder 5 on my 5.4. Replaced plugs(uggggh) and replaced the coil. Fixed issue for a while then it started again. Had to drive it as I was headed home from work trip, got home replaced it with oem coils, fixed issue but raw fuel caused catalyst code. Ruined the cats and had to replace. Never had issue since, that was 4 years ago

Did plugs to my 13 ecoboost 150 a couple weeks ago as I didn't know the last time they were done since I have only owned the truck for 12000 miles. Found almost all the coil connectors to be broken. Managed to save them and make them work but am wondering if they are replaceable and if you have a pn. Id really like to re-pin it rather than but connector the end together. Mines got 143000 miles on it and runs great. Its already had timing chains and phasers

Was the connector itself broken, or just the red locking tab? If it's just the locking tab, leave it be. The connectors are tight enough that it won't be problematic. If it is the connector itself, but it runs well, I would leave it alone.

Motorcraft part WPT-1284. It's a pigtail kit designed for you to cut off the old connector and crimp on a new one. BUT, if you're careful and patient you can use a pick to disassemble and pop the wires out of the old connector, then reassemble them into the new one. FordTechMakuloco quick tip #62 FTW

When I run into mysteries like this I swap the coil and the plug to test both parts in one shot, but NOT both parts from one cylinder. Take the plug from #1 and coil from#3, or whatever cylinders give the easiest access on the engine you're working on. The extra minute spent swapping the plugs could save a lot more time.

My 2012 F150 has 253,000 miles, I haven’t had any coil failures, but should I replace them all now before then or as they fail?
@markk3652
@markk3652 4 жыл бұрын
253000 miles answers your question. If it's not broken, leave it go till it is. Sometimes you get a great set of coils, and changing them out in the name of prevention, makes more trouble than you want.

Oh man.Wish my problem was just as simple. I have a 2011 F150 3.5 Ecoboost, OEM parts. It misfires, but only in the morning on first crank. I have to turn it off and on again until it catches correctly, then no problem the rest of the day. Drives me crazy. I changed the plugs and the boots but not the coils. Any idea?

My MSD coils have worked a little better than my FoMoCo coils. I still use SP-542 plugs gapped down to 0.026 tho. No idle stumble, smooth light load acceleration as well, solid WOT acceleration. When FoMoCo coils are $90/ea and I can get a set of MSD for $200 I don’t see why I wouldn’t get them. I do have extra coils because the MSDs time to warranty the coils.

Ever had problem with 2004 F-150 5.4L FX4 PCV valve or Engine Ventilation Tube assembly. Ford dealer says they do Not service the PCV valve on this vehicle. Asked parts counter and they said you have to buy the entire drivers side Valve Cover as the PCV valve is pressed into it. The Engine Ventilation Tube has an electrical connection to it?

I'm not very familiar with ANY engine newer than 1995 or 96 (a.k.a. OBD 1). I'm wondering what was meant by saying "don't even get me started" when referring to the lack of anti-sieze on the spark plugs. I also noticed that none was used when the plug was reinstalled. I've ALWAYS used it on spark plugs, especially when they're going into aluminum heads. Is there a reason that I shouldn't?
