I had looked at numerous vids here and yours have been the most helpful! First thanks! I mean when you explained many of the symptoms like coasting, it was exactly my issue. I first tried cleaning it with carb/TB cleaner and didn't work after a good warm up of the engine. I was still having starting with idle issues when the car is warmed up after 5-10 mins. After going to my local car shop and buying a new IAC, the auto in question, a 2003 F150 with about 166k miles on it started right up and did the same test after 5-10 minutes and also drove it around a bit to make sure the idle wasn't traveling while coasting and turning. And alas, the replacement worked! Thanks again!

Glad you commented about the fact that the IAC moves very little. I was told a test you can do is remove the IAC while still plugged in. And then turn the key to the on position. The car will ready for start up by opening the IAC wide open. Likewise you can unplug it and the IAC should fully close. I tried it on my 2000 ranger and I don’t notice much of a difference. Even put on another one with similar results. But if what you are saying is true I may not have noticed the small movement change made.

A couple of raps with a wrench on the IAC valve will usually fix a stuck one due to carbon build up or just plain wear. Of course you should replace it ASAP.

Another great trick.. Can you answer the debate some of us have been having about the older Ford egr valves, ei, 2001 Ranger 4.0l. When smoke testing the intake, the egr's tend to leak alittle smoke out the bottom, some info says theyre supposed to, some guys say no, and back and forth we go. I've seen the same argument numerous times. If you could settle the debate since you seem to be the definite Ford guy to go to. Thanks much

Thanks for the video ! Having a huge problem with my Mustang 2004/ 3.8 litre engine. After changing fuelpump and bigger throttlebody 70 mm, idle has been sky high, goes to 2500, after 20-30 secs goes down to 1100-1200, never lower?? There has to be leak in vacuum system, CEL codes are: P0507 and P0405??? I know there has to be big leak somewhere since my AC works and after blowing to face, it suddenly changes to windshield, like defrost, not even touching anything?? Did change/ tested DPFE sensor, fine, changed TPS, IAC sensor, and EGR valve??? Checked all vacuum hoses under hood, no leaks?? Did check canister solenoid in rear, getting 12 V... , and when applied, closes???, took out canister purge valve, in front, could not really test it??, cleaned it, will change that, after taking new DPFE sensor back!!!??? Could that be open all the time?? And make idle go up, like that?? DId have " check engine light" on ,, even before changing fuelpump, and throttlebody, every now and then, and also " check fuel cap" light, did replace fuel cap, no help?? Do I need smoke leak-test next?? What could be leaking/ wrong?? Thanks, youtheman =) PS. could something above fuel tank/ sensor be leaking???? Thanks=)

So in my thinking, if this IAC is causing a no start situation, you should be able to simply the start the vehicle by opening the throttle a bit (putting on the gas pedal) correct? I have a 94 Mustang Cobra that decided not to start today. It is cold-- 39F), and the car is cammed. I initially thought maybe the IAC was the issue because I had intermittent high idling issues at times, but I can't even get the car to start with gas pedal depressed. Makes me think it's something more. Going to test fuel pressure tonight after work.

I want to share some additional ideas. My Hyundai Santa Fe (manual transmission) has been sitting for a year. When I start it up, it stalls immediately unless I give it some gas. Used the throttle holder trick (Genius. Thank you!) and it worked. But I did one more thing. I pressed the AC button and sure enough, it would bring the engine way done. I thought pressing the button on/off a couple times would help work the valve loose, if it's simply stuck in place for sitting for so long. Don't worry about my compressor. It's no good anyway and I actually has to jump the pressure switch connector to get it to work without refrigerant. It didn't work. And the engine stalled as soon as I removed the the object I stuck under the throttle lever thing. That's proof enough for me to go ahead and try to clean the IAC valve. I can't even reach the connector to check for power to it without taking things apart anyway.

I have to shut the vehicle down and start again. However, it did it again today I took off the vehicle and now it won’t start. I can also smell gas. Could this be the problem? Thank you

FordTechMakuloco hey I have a question about my 97 ranger if you have the time to help me. So I have a no start condition but it’s a five speed and I can roll it off I was throwing a auto air control code but it doesn’t start by holding down the gas or opening the throttlebody. But after I roll it off and drive it when I come home and cut it off I can immediately crank it right back up. But once it sits for a little while it just turns over. First thing I thought of was Cam or crank sensors but shouldn’t they throw a code if they was bad

@texan176

I have a 99 F-150 XLT with the 5.4 V8 that is having an issue I call perpetual cruise control. At any given speed it will hold the speed if I let off the throttle on a level grade. It will slow down on its own if there is an incline. Brake wear will be horrible if this is not fixed. I changed the IAC valve but it did not improve this condition. Most of the time it idles okay but once in a while it will idle at 1000 rpm in neutral or park at operating temp. There are no CEL codes present. I have cleaned the throttle body and checked the throttle cable for binding but did not find problems. There is this slight vibration I feel in the gas pedal if I let off completely and the truck is “cruising” then I barely touch the gas pedal with the tip of my shoe. No other car I have driven has this vibration so I think this might be the issue. Any ideas on what to check next?

I have an 03 F150 with 5.4 and when the front of it is jacked up gas is leaking out the back and it is hard to start and smells like fuel like flooded. Would a bad Iac cause this? It only does it when front is jacked up or on steep hill front first and only has a quarter tank of gas in it so i don't think there's a hole in tank. It's hard to tell ware it's coming out from. Any help be greatly appreciated

I have a '94 Mark VIII 4.6 in my '55 TBird. It idles fine but if I blip the throttle or when I come to a stop with the clutch disengaged the idle is around 1600 rpm for 5 or 6 seconds before it drops to 700. I recently swapped a spare (used) IAC and it was little worse, hanging at 2000 rpm for 5-6 seconds before returning to normal. When I first drove the car several years ago I assumed the high idle was due to the ECU looking for the 4R70W transmission. But I noticed when the cooling fan comes on at idle the engine nearly dies. It wasn't clear to me what you are checking by starting the car with the razor blades holding the throttle open slightly. I watch your videos and have learned quite a bit, thanks for doing what you do.

The 05-07 Taurus has an idle stability issue never addressed by Ford that constantly adjust the idle based on alternator load causing the rolling idle you can verify this by unplugging the primary side of the alternator the concern will be gone.

but wont this affect engine performance? because ECU has different fuel map for cold vs hot engines. so this throttle thing you did may be good to bypass a bad IAC valve when cold, but when it's all warmed up and the ECU switched to warm fuel map it will be more air than it is used to normally ignite fuel. will run slightly lean all the time won't it?

I have a 2006 focus and i just started to have an issue with the idle.. i start the car and the engine has a high idle and after 5 seconds it goes back to normal..... it never use to do that. and when i have the car idleling then i disconnect the idle control valve and the car shuts off... now is this normal? or do i have to replace the IAC?

The original Ford parts are on big crapp !! if youo buy a new oem iacv from Ford store it dies within 3 months! Also their Fomoco spark plugs are crap too! buy Ngk laser platinum, and replace parts with a good brand like Ngk or Bosch. Anything is better than the oem ford part.

Does this also provide extra air on cold start? The reason I ask is my first car a 1972 Volvo 142E had a air bypass valve as part of the cold start circuit. It was bolted to the side of the head in a coolant passage hole and it opened and closed the air bypass valve the same way the coolant thermostat opens and closes. Old school mechanical for early fuel injection.

Yes, Ford IACs open wider for cold start and are used to maintain a high idle until the engine is warmed up. Other older engines used the mechanical equivalent you mention instead of a high idle cam connected to the automatic choke.

My 01 was doing that, I'm not sure why the pumps get bad in cold weather, they just do. I had a 99 Explorer V8 before this 01, it had that issue, was told it was the pump, then I got this 01, and it was doing the same thing, so I changed the pump and it seems to be fine. here's a good site for the Explorers. www.ExplorerForum.com
