Wow just found this site video...Such a service for the knowledge bomb dropped. Thanks for the most thorough video I've seen. A biz such as yours would rock in Charleston SC for working guys who try DIY on most but need a hand occasionally. I'm swapping out my IAC tomorrow, it makes the saddest sound on power up but at 242,000 miles, the old gal has a right to new parts....just to validate, yesterday I lifted bed and changed out entire Airtex fuel pump/sending unit using 6 cargo straps and a lot of patience. Tried to attach photo, no joy...Thanks again.

THANKYOU ! My Van was blowing the 30 amp fuel pump fuse under the hood which was un related to this video , Twice . And then i noticed a high idle .Thats when i searched you tube for a high idle on a 97 ford econoline 250. Thats when i came across your video and i took a chance with the IAC valve because I could not find any vacumn leaks. Replacing the IAC valve was the problem.THANKYOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! You saved me so much of a head ache!

Love your Channel!! I love working with OEM parts, makes life easier and quality is better. Are there any issues you have seen with non-OEM IAC valve? Why do you recommend only Motorcraft IAC?

Hey bud great videos, I follow everything you do on the f150's with the 5.4l 2v Triton. Anyway I have a 2002 f150 FX4 offroad, with the 5.4l 2v Triton, I have just got done replacing the whole rearend with a yukon true track, with usa alloy axles, brand new front, an rear drive shafts, and brand new transfer case, well after doing all that I found out my passenger side exhaust manifold was rotten out so had to replace that as well and had to even drill out the back two studs. Well now everything is done I went for a test ride tonight and now notice when driving out the highway at 70mph when I left off the gas pedal my rpms drop down from 1700 all the way down to 1100/1200, but when I get back on the gas it comes right back up,so I tried this from 50mph, and 70mph and it does it the same drops about 500 rpm's then right back up after a few secs or I get back on the gas, I also tried it with my cruise control on I set it on at 65mph and when going down a hill and even a few times on a strait away it dropped the rpms then came right back up, and when it does this it almost feels like I'm putting the brakes on for a sec then it comes right back up and feels normal. Please any info or point me in the right direction to start would be great, as I just forked out so much money rebuilding the whole drive train I don't have any extra to just start guessing and replacing stuff. Also there are no engine codes or lights on, and when I bought the truck 4yrs ago the tranny was just put in it about 15k miles before I bought the truck, it now has 181k on it, and had 140k or so on it when I bought it.but the truck was so nice I started rebuilding everything that would go wrong from the whole steering system/ control arms, wheel bearings everything. I also did complete tune up about a yr or so ago all new coils, plugs, k&n air filter, high output alternator just to name a few things. Anyway I thank you for all your videos as if it wasn't for you and your videos I wouldn't have been able to do none of the stuff I did to the truck Thank you so much my friend, and again any info on the rpm drop would be great.

Great Video!!! Got a 2000 Ford F-150... Replaced idle air control valve and still have up and down idle.... How do I properly relearn the idle air control valve? There's a lot of conflicting information on KZbin about relearning procedure for 2000 f150... Thanks

Brian, first, you are the BEST!!! I can't, maybe I could drive to Chicago to help w my 99 F150 5.4 All is pretty good, but idle is just a tad, minor, jumpy, 6-800 rpm, also, can the engine fan clutch flux, which this truck has contribute to un-smooth idle, imperfect idle? Nice explanation. I have problem on my 1997 escort zetec 1.6 16v with high idle rpm and i already replaced iac, with an old one i had a problem with wariating idle, thats the reason i replace it. Now i better look at the intake and i found it distroted, and when i put the new one i can hear the noise, because of vacum leakin. With old one that wasnt the problem. Im not sure if the body of the intake is distroted or the new IAC is. Ill better look that tomorrow and ill try to fix it. My question is: How can i easily test the V on the connector or can i put an 12v bulb there to test it ? Thanks! Nice tips!

What was your idle speed when you swapped out the sensor? What engine were you working on? I missed that ?

Is it possible that this air control valve can cause an engine to lose power while you're driving down the road? I am borrowing my father-in-law's pickup while my SUV is in the shop and it's a 1997 Ford Ranger. It has a 4-cylinder engine and it was losing power on the highway the other day when I was trying to drive about 55 it felt like the engine lost power or idled way down and I could only get it to do about 40 when I was going up a hill but then it suddenly started responding normally again. It did this again another time or two during the trip home. When I parked it I let the engine run and started checking connections and things thinking it could be a sensor. I tapped on this particular valve while it was running with my fingers and the engine which was idling kind of rough and low like it wanted to cut off suddenly perked up and seemed to be idling normally. When it malfunctions does it usually just cause a high idle or can it do something like the symptoms I noticed? What do you think could have caused this if it's not this valve? Could it be the throttle position sensor? Thank you.

Great informative video thanks alot, I was wondering if I need to replace my IAC. I have a racing idle Rpm is good its only when im driving 2nd to 3rd gear races then it goes inot 3rd and won't go into 4th so it only goes 55 mpg at 4500 rpm. Tried cleaning it and i sealed it good. Any advise?

Do you have video on how to replace spark plug wires on a 2004 v6 mercury mountaineer? Also my mountaineer stalls occasionally when I out it in reverse and also when I am on a stop light the truck feels like it wants to die. you think the IAC could be the issue. transmission was rebuilt last year. Thanks

Ive got a 2003 escape that is a 5spd with the zetec. Everytime i throw it into nuetral coming to a stop, the rpms will spike to around 4k then slowly come down. Also when i shift, with my foot off the gas and i push the clutch in, the rpms will go up about 500 then come back down when in gear. I got a cel that is a P0507. Any thoughts?

I have a 2011 ford raptor. Last week I been experiencing almost a misfire type filling only when coasting forward from a dead stop or having my foot slightly on the brake and inching forward, or when coming to a stop the last few mph the truck begins to shutter. Um when sitting in drive I get a lot more shutter then the big block normally has. No I ruled out brakes because when coasting in neutral or when coming to a stop in neutral the shutter is gone and I have no brake pulsation at higher speed. The last few days I can start noticing it shutter but a lot less noticeable while driving. I have viewed my misfire data and have yet to see any misfire count. Brand new motor craft plugs and wires (basically did my 105k) any ideas

Will the IAC also cause low idleing and stalling? '06 F150 5.4L 4x4 idleing in P/N @500 -600 rpm but in D/R @ 300 - 400 rpm. Once moving engine runs fine.

i have a 96 ford exorer runs fine on the road but when i come to a stop it idles fine for a min then it wNts to shut off so o have to keep foot on gas pedal. engine is 4.0 efi. great channel keep up the good work

My 2014 Ford F-150 eco boost v6 has a high idle on cold startup only and doesn’t settle down for about a mile of driving. Only concern is I pull out of driveway too fast have to use brakes at idle speed giving it no gas. The high idle is approx 1200 when it settles down it idles smooth around 600

Hello My name is Bryan and I have a 2003 Ford explorer Eddie Bauer edition with the 4.6. I just replaced the egr tube and valve and I replaced the IAC as well. My throttle has been sticking especially when I come up to a stop light. Any information would be appreciated thank you

No you want to use this method as it load test the circuit.

On a properly operating unconnected (in your hand) IAC is the valve physically completely closed or is there a small gap between the pintle and the base? I ordered a new MC IAC (CX1867 ) and both my current IAC and the new one shows a small gap, i,e the valve does not look to shut completely on its seat out of the box (1999 F150 5.4l). I'm guessing there should not be a gap as this is what would cause the engine to stall out when one DCs the electrical connector. PS Thank for the videos, if I lived 2000 miles closer you'd be my mechanic.

Love the channel helps me out more than i can describe. But quik question for uou i have a 97 expedition 4.6 romeo. Two days ago i started it and it just idles at 2000 rpms. I romoved iac and did not seem gunked up but found alot of oil in the wire harness/ clip. Is it possible the oil bridged the two pins and shorted out valve moter or fuse?where should i start? Vehicle has 250000 miles but need it to hold up for a few more months. Any and all advise welcomed and appreciated. Thank you

I did a smoke test on my 2001 F150 5.4 and the IAC had smoke leak from the cap. I don't seem to have any issues with my IAC, should there be smoke from the cap?

Great video, I have replace my iacv because it die on me at idle at the stoplight, have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running. After replacing it the idle when up to 1300 in park, and 8 to 900 in drive. Fuel trim are good and there no Vacuum leak. Do u think it's just a bad part out of box. Thank

Got it fix. Rpm was at 1300 so I unplug the iacv an rpm didn't go down, hold at 1300 rpm, tap new iacv with a screwdriver couple time and idle when down, check rpm was at 500, plug it back up an idle was back to normal. It was stuck for some reason

hey i need your help big time...... i changed the oil on my 03 ford f150 fx4 with a 5.4. while i changed oil my son replaced air filter backwards. i started truck and it ran for a minute then shut itself off. put a new air filter in. i cant hear fuel pump kick on? it senses rpms cranks and wants to start. fuel rail just puts a tiny low pressure squirt out. checked fuses. my only vehicle please help.

Hi my name is Johnny I really appreciate you doing all your videos they're really helpful I have a question for you a couple months ago I was changing my spark plugs and coil packs and I broke off my DPFE sensor ports... now my check engine light stays on and it's telling me that is the DPFE sensor I'm thinking it could be the hoses Maybe but the car also has a little bit of a rough idle.... at 1300 RPMs well just below the 2 on the RPMs the idol gets a little worse Medela stop light or in park it is noticeable not out of control but you can notice it this is a 2004 Ford Expedition XLT 4.6 if you have any help or knowledge to give me on this please let me know

I have a 03 ranger 3.0 with high idle Changed the mass, IACV, TPS and PCV Sprayed starter fluid on all vacuum lines with no change in idle No check engine light

could be throttle body wear look inside body see if the brass plate has a gap or is it worn down. there should be no gap at all .use flash light.

So if the long term fuel trims are -18 no codes other than p1506 pcv valve was replace iac also egr and Intake gaskets , valve covers, injectors plugs, coils, some hoses ,runs good just high rpm no dies or black smoke maf sensor fixed black smoke problem? Lost

Great video. Question: 98 Ford Explorer high idle when stopped and vehicle doesn't want to slowdown when gas pedal is released. IAC and connection are good.

Nice diagnosis! What are your views on cleaning the IAC? Considering the service manual states that it should not be cleaned.

I only clean them if they are severely carboned up and only as a diagnostic tool otherwise they get replaced.

Hi, I have been having rpm issues with an 08 5.4. After 23 miles of highway driving it wants to die out at low rpms when pulling into work or in traffic, putting it in neutral and rEving the engine a couple times it goes way until the next trip. Any ideas where to start looking? Thanks

My 98 F150 4.2 has the 1506 code, idles a little higher than normal, but is running smoothly. I did replace the IAC, but did not resolve the issue. I can't hear any noticeable vacuum leaks, so my question is, what would be the next most common problem?

Check the vacuum line that runs under the throttle body to the PCV valve on the passenger side valve cover, it is a known problem and can cause vacuum leak and high idle issues

Changed the pcv valve and that troublesome connector that fails and ofcourse it had a hole in it. Now im concerned about the iac because now it runs smooth until it warms up and it runs real low then stalls when I back up or park slowly. I have found other leaks in a few vacuum lines one that goes to the ac which isnt running. I wonder if that iac isnt running right. I hope its that. Cant afford an overhaul right now. Need this truck to run to go make money just to give it an overhaul. Frustrating.

I've heard that if you unplug the connector to the IAC and crank the engine over... you need to re-learn the computer. Is this true even if you're cranking the engine to check the connector using the noid light (since once again the connector is not actually hooked up to the IAC)?

Ozzstar , Mine was broken on the inside . The spring on the inside of the valve was broken and lodged in the wrong area on the inside of the valve . You could look inside the hole that the vacumn hose attaches to and see the spring.It was very obvious when you look at the inside of the new one verses the inside of the old one.

Is there an IAC on the 2013 F150's? Idle is a little rough (30,000 miles with new plugs and coils (5.0 V8), reset the PCM, new air filter and clean mass airflow sensor) with no codes. Thought maybe a dirty IAC might be the issue?

No IAC it is built into the ETC system.

I found this video because I got that air valve error check engine light thing, but I'm idling about 600-800 RPM. I cleared the code but was wondering what the hell it meant because I'm used to carbureted stuff.

I did get the error off Roading on a manual trans, maby just from idling down hills it upset ECU. I just know I parked it, went swimming, came back and I had the air but everything was normal.

FordTechMakuloco Are you using Ford IDS with a wireless modem or is there a offline version if you're not doing updates as mfr's have portals setup for so you can web connect? I know some shops pay a annual subscription. I'm normally not a Ford guy but have a good friend who just bought a used 04 Ford Ranger with the code you went over. I quick pulled the data with my innova small portable scan tool but will hit it with the Snap On Modis Edge later today or tomorrow as we're sub zero temps right now. I use the Sure Track with Snap On but don't have wireless hot spot for access when mobile and that complicates the process when I'm away from internet because as with sure track it can pull from internet servers common test methods, fast fixes and other data reported by techs in shops around the country. Would definitely be interested in the software you have if it is fairly affordable but not sure if I'd use it alot as we all know each mechanic has their preference of brands of work they like to do. Keep up the good videos and I did subscribe as you explained it fairly well. Also is there a voltage spec, resistance, etc that I need to be checking for to verify the circuit and also verify the part failure. TO many parts swappers out there in this world today and it's better if you do the checks first and eventually they'll be less of a hindrance especially when it comes to reputation and fixing the vehicle properly the first time.

+Richard Cowtails if it's running negative the engine is running rich too much fuel. If the trims are positive then then it's running lean from unmetered air flow

thank you for that clarification. the live data seems to go back and fourth. is that weird? when my 99 ram idle is starts choking and trys to stall out. im thinking computer. replaced the o2 sensors intake gaskets. iac sensor. if i put a noid light on the iac wire connect what should it do in behavior?

Could be that the thermostat is stuck open and the coolant temperature sensor is telling the computer that the idle needs to remain high to continue to get the engine up to temperature. This will be noticable if the coolant gauge is not working.

Well, I reckon I'm a about to find out. I'm on my second new IAC Valve and it's still idling high until I come to a complete stop, then it falls back down. If it were a vacuum leak it would be constantly high. I'll let you know how things turn out after I replace the thermostat, temp. sender & sensor.

O.K., replaced thermostat, temp sensor and sender. Coolant gauge now works, all three new parts appear to operate properly. They all looked to new original from '98, so, needed done anyway. Here's my issue. Starts w/no problems. Idles high at first, as it should, and drops down to idle. Problem is when driving and shifting it idles high. Idle doesn't come down all the way until I come to a complete stop and take my foot off the brake. Parts that have been replaced are: catalitic converter, O2 sensors, DPFE, EGR Valve & EGR sensor, throttle position sensor, PCV valve, and IAC valve(twice) both were new. Also took throttle body off and cleaned it. All parts removed were original parts. Truck runs great aside from the idle holding out until I come to a complete stop. Your thoughts. Also MAF sensor was replaced a few months ago.

I noticed you didn't reset the IAC sensor when you replaced it....

I sure did it's always a good idea. I mention the KAM should be reset afterwards so it can learn the idle.

FordTechMakuloco sorry..I hv a 2007 Lincoln 5.4 3 valve 102k miles n changed plugs n cops n fuel filter n starts good idles fairly good Rev to 1200 to 2000 n it shudders once past tht it it's not as bad. now put into gear n u hear it sucking air..like its fueled starving. any ideas .I see a lot of your videos n u r great. .too bad you r not here in san antonio texas. .

Yeah, noticed that. Seems like there may have been a lean issue as well, IAC wouldn't have been causing that one.

short trim goes goes +24% then o2 drop to 0v.. no issue unmetered air at 1500rpm+ ??

+Robert Hancock I truly think the PCM was over and under fueling to test the response of the sensors the way it was on and off. I totally ignore that kind of stuff until the known faults are fixed.

hey I'm having a problem with my 2005 ford five hundred limited. showing code p0402. exhaust gas recirculation flow. exsesive detected. can you please help me. Iv read and it says I should change the egr dpfe sensor. but I can't seem to find that part for my car.
