If you actually use your truck like a truck you'll do it about every 100K. The 5.4 lacks oil flow, the plastic tensioners and the very light duty cam phazers just don't have the durability to stand up to heavy use with a little abuse tossed in. That's before you even deal with the broke spark plugs. The two valve engines weren't to bad but they were also so much less complicated.

@@MotFPS well anything CAN have something that fails. The fact is that, while the 5.4 3V had plenty of chronic issues, the 5.0 is pretty rock solid, as were the 4.6 and 5.4 2V engines before. Great video, very informative. I have an FX4 5.4T I bought new in 2005 that started having timing issues at around 130K miles. I was going to buy a full Dorman Timing kit because of the price of the parts. Luckily I saw various of you videos and they convinced me to buy original Ford cam phasers, the M360 oil pump and a matched Cloyes timing chain and tensioners set. Once the work started the tech found about 3/8” play in the crank shaft so we added a crank kit (the thrust bearing was gone and the crank was badly scored). The engine was put back together and the truck is running wonderfully. It is a great truck that hasn’t had any other issues other that mentioned above. I look forward to spending many more years with it. @@michaelhill6627 Mine did have a ticking sound but it was because of spark plugs. It is still completely quiet.

Had mine done in my 2001 F150 5.4L v8 after 17 years. Phasers were the main issue as well. I am at 246k miles and she is running strong. I do hear a ticking sound now though. Would love to have it rebuilt, but $$$$. Thx for the channel, it is my favorite channel for my F150. I have turned my mechanic onto your channel, and told him to refer to your channel when working on my truck. It has helped him, he is appreciative and he now takes in more Fords. Before he did not want to deal with them. Lol!

Thanks to your knowledge my 2008 5.4 is still running strong and at 75k I rebuilt the timing with all OEM updated parts you linked. Don't forget that oil pump. 5.4 owners!! Keep that oil changed!

Do some more 4.6 2v stuff. I know it’s amateur stuff compared to 5.4 3v though. Love the channel. Its. Its no question this channel has saved my 2005 f150 time and time again.

Interesting to hear your take on the cam journals. I've done several with journals that bad or worse and never had an issue, though I was skeptical at first. Also, I check the cam crank correlation with a scope and if it's good, I reuse the OEM chains. Replace the phasers, guides, and tensioners, maybe an oil pump, and away you go!

Wes is everywhere. Really like your channel, btw. I agree with your chain test using a scope. That’s how I checked my 5.4l 3v when I did the timing job.

Seeing that you have it all off I see no reason not to just put in a new chain and oil pump. This way you don't have to do it all over again for a long time.

Hey man, love your channel. I just did a 3 valve timing job a couple months ago and the passenger side guide had exploded. The chain had worn a 1.5 inch slot all the way thru the cover, you could literally see the chain. Oh and it was driven here. To make it even worse it came in with the complaint of an oil leak which a different shop said was the front crank seal !!! It was the chain slopping oil right out the front cover onto the balancer. Wish i could post a video .

These videos are great! It is noteworthy that that PCV is part of the valve cover. Mine was toast and had to buy a whole new valve cover. It is a pain in the ass job. But follow the videos and you'll be fine.

I’ll be attempting this job myself in the near future. Something came loose in the timing area and slapped through the bank 2 valve cover. Chain appears to be intact and on the gear, so I’m betting on this video subject as my issue. When I purchased the Expy from a used dealer, they told me it had a new timing job. I’m sure they used similar cheap parts now, as I’ve discovered they have a rep for doing so, or even used parts. Thanks for this channel and your experience shared. I wouldn’t think of doing this kind of work without it!

The best statement I've heard regarding quality is "You can buy good quality oats for your horse, or you can get oats that have been through another horse". That goes for parts and labor!

Brian is thorough and way better than any Ford Dealership Tech, bunch of butchers and parts swappers work at ALL Ford Dealerships, Our Gardner has a 2004 5.4 with 367K . he just had a full timing job and phasers swapped by an independent shop for $4600. man only uses Mobil 1 every 7K miles. This truck is whisper quiet with 367K miles

I follow you all the time and installed new engine in my 2004 f150 180,000 mi on the mark got the motor the same place as you did yours. I'm hoping the new one will last over 180,000 MI. Last one was kind of my fault not taking care of it not enough oil changes using regular oil just neglect but I love the truck and I can't afford a new one but I love your shows thanks
