If you’re having issues w these things, it’s time for a good quality reman crate motor, don’t waste your time with the cam phasers, they would be working if there was oil pressure, & because they’re not they’re garbage along with the motor. Grenade the motor then drop a crate motor in it not from the crap yard that’s not a 3v & it’ll be fine.

As long as you put a good oil pump in and not a stock Ford unit. you will probably not have another issue. Please tell us you used a Boundary or Melling or Livernois or Moroso or PCE. If you used a Ford one, I sure hope it was a Ford Racing model like the one used in the GT 500.... Good luck.

I've combed through your videos and can't find one that can tell me what's wrong with my 2010 5.4 3V. I've tried to take it to a number of different shops and they all say something different. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. It sputters when i start it but after its running it runs smooth. Under normal acceleration it goes smooth but if i try to accelerate slightly aggressive it sputters pretty bad then picks up speed. It's giving no codes and no CEL. But whenever i add lucas upper cylinder lubricant the rough start goes away but the other problems still remain. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have similar problems at the plant where the 5.0L is built. If the exhaust VCT isn't installed correctly it will ruin the VCT and nose of the cam when it goes through the machine that checks the timing. I said all that just to agree that if you don't install the VCT correctly and torque it properly you're wasting your time and money. Great video and i agree with another commenter that this guy is thorough and explains what to look for and what not to do on certain repairs.

Sea Hawk Toyota and Honda have had relatively few issues with their VVT systems in well maintained vehicles. There’s nothing wrong with the design. It’s the junk parts combined with the lack of maintenance that has made Ford’s such a nightmare. GM’s V-6 engines aren’t having major problems as well due to garbage O.E. Parts.

Great diag! It seems like I won't see these 3valves for a while then all of a sudden they start coming in one after another, at my age of 56 and working on so many different car lines I definitely need a refresher in these engines from time to time. Down here in South Louisiana we don't have to deal with rust and most of these trucks are in good shape, but if I can learn any thing about any vehicle especially these engines I'm all ears. I'm one of the few shops that will work on these engines, a lot of the other shops have been burned on them so they won't touch them. Great video looking forward to the next one!

Those other shops just didn't know what they were doing these engines are very simple to diagnose and fix.

Thank you for another great informative video. It sure is a heart breaker that the AM timing sets are under $200.00, while the FOMOCO kits are over $1,200.00! I sure wish a company would make quality affordable replacement AM parts.

Hi FordTech. I have a question semi related to this. I found you did one video on this subject several years ago and wonder if there is an update to that video. I have a 2004 F150, 5.4L, 4x4, 116k miles. I have a throttle lag randomly but at times very severe. The best way I can describe this is like a governor kicking in. It happens while accelerating at all throttle positions or while cruising at all speeds, again very random. I should also add that it is also very frequent. For example, if I am driving at 60 mph, suddenly my rpm drops, the whole tone of my engine changes, and I start slowing down. Or if I am accelerating at 3.5k rpm, it will suddenly drop to 2k rpm again with a severe tone change of my engine. Thanks for any help or advice you can provide.

My 2007 feels like it bogs down on the highway sometimes too. The exhaust note changes and sounds like something is holding it back. I had 1 converter done and I think I might need the other. I got an oxygen sensor code. 161k miles. Please post if you get it figured out. Thanks!

Many thanks for posting this!! I've had the MIL lit for a couple years now for the P0340/0344 code. Kept putting off removing the valve cover to check the "fingers" on the phaser. Will run these diagnostics first and see what comes up. Excellent advice my friend!!

Same truck and engine, I got rough engine, loss of power, stalling sometimes, constant engine ticking. Codes p0345, p0340, p0300, p0022. Fuel trims and 02 readings all look good. None of those codes are specific for a VVT solenoid. Could I have a bad or clogged solenoid and get the above codes yet no solenoid code? I checked the wiring for the camshaft sensors, look good, continuity checks out, I did the multimeter tests on the sensors (ohms, voltage with metal waved in front of them) they seem to pass all the tests, got some new ones anyway as they are inexpensive, put them in and cleared the codes. I did not drive the truck yet, it is a family members. I did start it up, and it did not sound any different, still has the same ticking. Waiting to hear back from them if it has the same symptoms or if the MIL comes back. As for the ticking, is coming from the driver side. I do not think it is from misfire as it is steady and consistent, not intermittent. Pulled injector plugs one at a time, had same drop in rpm for each, so think no misfire causing the ticking. I checked best I could for an exhaust leak, could feel no leaks anywhere or see any soot. The ticking is much louder when I am under the engine than above the engine that is why I was thinking exhaust leak, maybe I just missed it, or could this be from something bottom side of engine, maybe a piston bearing on the crank shaft? I was going to pull the VVT solenoids and look at them when the truck was here but thought you had to pull the covers to get to them, until I saw your video here, If they bring it back I will pull them and have a look.

Fantastic video Brian. I assume those oil holes lined up in the cam bearing? I'd check the torque on the passenger side phaser too.

Question for you, 2007 F250 5.4L, I replaced the fuel pump and FPDM, but accidentally ordered the wrong pump. It has a higher flow(assuming a V10 pump), now I'm getting a catalyst efficiency code. Could it be an overfueling issue caused by the pump?

No the FRP sensor reading would cause the pcm to adjust the pulse width to the FP.

That’s probably the thing I enjoy most about your videos: You don’t just start replacing parts and say “Maybe this will work” or “Maybe this will fix it”. You actually take the time and do actual diagnosis and do a process of elimination. Part by part, step-by-step. This is the way it should be. But as you already know, a lot of dealerships don’t do that. They just start replacing parts and hope that it’ll fix the problem. Keep up the good work.

Dude I have engine knock and had some of those codes apear, along with a rought idle than stall out when engine is hot at low rpms. I got it working better now after a motor flush and some thicker oil. Anyways I will have to so this job soon and this video is excellent. You make the best F150 repair vids, thank you bro!

I've been running okay with frequent oil changes (every 5k miles) and a bottle of oil stabilizer now for 2 yrs since I got the truck. It seems to be worse sometimess, better at other times. Runs fine, no stalling. In fact, someone pointed the ticking out to me saying they had a Triton engine do this but I no longer noticed it until he pointed it out. I drove 2000 miles cross country and towed a trailer with a car on it no problem last year.

It looks like these Tritons aren't good for much over 100k miles. There's just too much to go wrong on them. My old Dodge Caravan with the original 3.3 plain old OHV V6 engine has 220k. It's still running like new. And Ford's coming out with an opposing-piston engine? I don't know whether to laugh or cringe.
