I'm 63 years old and also ran the 2022 Amsterdam marathon which incidentally, was my first! My training plan was shot to pieces when I suffered an achilles injury for three weeks with virtually no running. And if that wasn't enough I came down with flu three weeks before the marathon which then developed into a bacterial infection! I was still taking antibiotics on the Saturday before the marathon. All in all, I lost out on approximately 200km of training. At around the 35km mark I also hit the wall and had to dig deep to get across the finish! No doubt, the hardest thing I've ever done in my life! Determined to get back and run a better marathon next year!

I run every day and have run a bunch of half marathons-but I just don't ever see myself running a marathon. I don't have it in me. Anyone who runs 26 miles at any pace has my ultimate respect. That's a great achievement for a human body. Well done, Simon.

Mike, I know EXACTLY how you feel, believe me, I was there, but I was wrong and you're wrong... you absolutely 100% can!!!! I just finished my second one 2 days ago, and both of them I absolutely knew I couldn't do it, I knew I wasn't capable, it was impossible, and yet I did it, and without walking!! Yes, it's f***ing hard, harder even than I ever imagined, but the reality is we are capable of soooooooo much more, sooooo much more than we think we are!! Just bite off more than you can chew and do it!!
@TheChessPlayer1956

It's not a matter of can, it's a matter of do you want to. Without the motivation, no one can run a marathon but with it everyone can. In the end, enjoy the sport however you want too. Best wishes.

I felt the exact same way... pounding out 26.2 miles seemed terrible. Then I switched to trail running, tried a 50k, and found my new passion. While just thinking about the distance made my body ache and my mind flatline, once I switched to trails and slowed down a bit, I not only covered 32 miles, I loved it and wasn't bored (or injured) at all. Color me shocked!

Brilliant, well done all of you. My first London Marathon was sub 4 but my second I thought I could do much better but my hip decided to fail me half way and so I had to limp around the second half and managed to finish over 5 hours but I did keep going and I did finish what ever the time. you're right, the plan doesn't always come off and never under estimate how tough it can be. Well done Si and all of you. Great vid Chris, keep it up.

Amsterdam was my first ever marathon and watching this brought it all back! I ran the Yorkshire marathon yesterday while you were doing this and I had achilles problems and a stomach that was going up and down like a clown's hat and the last 6 miles was just rough, but I pulled it together to come in on 4 hours on the button, through sheer stubborness and pride but mostly because another runner I met on the way helped me keep going when I'd mentally checked out. Its why I loved seeing you stick with Si and keep him going, because he was me yesterday. PBs are great and wonderful, but it's when we have hard times that it's the spirit of helping other each other out that means more than anything. Massive respect to all of you but especially you Fordy for being a stand up guy 👍

Running marathon can be a way of healthy living lifestyle for at least 30+ years. For anyone who keeps doing so year after year and still can manage to complete a full marathon course like this beautiful Amsterdam Marathon route at the golden age of 85 can be very really inspirational and is a lifetime goal worth aiming for! Cheers! Welcome to join the marathoner family worldwide! Run safely and train sufficiently before the event is the BEST way to go. One local participant, unfortunately, passed away in London Marathon 2022 on October 2nd, 2022. Safety must always come first.

everyone has different goals, and not everyone is trying to get a PB or go sub-3 hours. some people are running for charity, or a lost loved one, or just to see if they can. it's all relative and regardless of what someone 'looks like' or how much training they've done, getting around 26.2 miles is an incredible achievement.
@Kaisersozze
@Kaisersozze 2 жыл бұрын
@@SkythanilDon't get me wrong, a few months ago I couldn't even do 5k and I'm in decent shape otherwise. It's just interesting cause you never see anyone overweight doing a triathlon for example or a cross country mountain bike race.
@Gws525
@Gws525 2 жыл бұрын
The issue is that the vast majority of people aren't fit enough to do one. Just because you can finish one, doesn't mean you should. The toll on your body is plain stupid but for some reason, with marathons, people just accept that.
@Skythanil
@Skythanil 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kaisersozze i'm not sure i'm really following what point you're making? marathons are much more accessible than triathlons or cross-country mountain biking, so you get a broader range of people doing them. you have to be pretty keen on triathlons or mountain biking to buy all the expensive gear they require. marathons can also be done in groups with friends (as fordy shows!), so they're more appealing to people doing them with friends or family
