Forefoot Varus is a condition in which there is angulation or inversion of the bones present in the front part of the foot when compared to the heel. In Forefoot Varus deformity, the bones present on the inside of the foot tend to become slightly high off the surface than the outer part of the foot at the time of weightbearing. In a normal position, there are three points that touch the ground during weightbearing which are the heel, the big toe joint, and the little toe joint. In Forefoot Varus deformity, there are only two points of contact which are the heel and the outer part of the foot and hence to compensate for this the foot becomes pronated causing the heel to evert even more so that the inner part of the foot touches the surface. This results in a couple of problems. First one is that the integrity of the arch of the foot is lost. The arch of the foot acts as a shock absorber and due to this deformity the function of the arch of the foot gets compromised. The second problem is the pronated foot impairs the natural alignment of the knee and the hip.
In this video I show a Soft Tissue technique for releasing the stiffness of the forefoot, Using the Gua Sha linked below:

Thanks Mark, this is exactly what I have. I was made to wear corrective shoes as a child which made it much worse. Interestingly, my left foot is less strong than my right, but it occurred long before I started driving. I'm trying all your techniques to build my foot mobility. I do a fascia and toe flexibility massage almost every night before bed. I'm essentially doing with my hands what you're doing with the stone.

Hello, I am a long time watcher, and I was looking for some advice. I am 18 years old, and lead an active lifestyle, I have had flat feet all my life, on May 15th I had a calcaneal osteotomy. He fused my first ray and then medialized the calcaneus and put a screw in the heel bone to hold the correction in place. I am currently in rehab, the goal is to ween out of the boot, and regain ROM and strength. I am not sure what I should do? Any exercises I should do? How do I avoid having surgery on the other foot in the future? Any input would be greatly valued ,Thank you!

There is also a lot of discussion on wether fixing flat feet from the hips or from the foot it self, what do u think? In which case would u look from the hips & when from the feet...?

It is both..for some, it can be mostly the foot and for some it will be mostly Hip strength, Never one or the other, because they are synergistic. I also like to term fixing flat feet as developing "control", can you, at will align your ankle? You can you maintain your foot position at will?

Great information. Thanks for sharing. I have hind foot varus and am in therapy due to chronic instability issues. It seems to be a forgotten area and healthcare providers overlook PT after ankle sprains. They never address the root cause.

Thanks! Hindfoot Varus, is why I suggest people walk forefoot. I have a video coming up addressing that.. I hope it can help.

@@GrownandHealthy thanks for the info. I’m more of a toe walker (forefront) anyways due to my dance training on and off through the years. What I’m doing in PT is more medial work to try to abduct and create more flexibility in my calcaneus. Additionally I have high arches. All that is setting me up for failure. I’m also using my Pilates reformer to assist with the rehabilitation. I have two other exercises I do. One is in the tub with warm water where I allow my feet to pronate. The warm water helps to create more flexibility in my calcaneus. I also do a few gyrokinesis knee rolls to aid in my talus/calcaneus flexibility. Would love more ideas from you. Keep up the good work sharing your knowledge. So far I don’t need an orthotic. Any help is appreciated.

This video explains the missing pieces of information of my own research on the mechanics of the whole relationship of the muscles and soft tissue of lower leg and foot. We all know muscles pull on the ligaments that attach to bone. If that muscles is weak or too tight it will effect the range of motion of that particular body part. Slow oxidative muscle fibers you can consider them isometric contractions that really never fatigue. But if there are muscles that have atrophied and tight especially in the foot and leg (which must support your weight) problems will occur.

Hey man, really appreciate the video. I think I have this. Been thinking I had pronation in the left foot, cause by muscle weakness, but it's probably from the angle of the forefoot. When standing on one leg, I have to pronate on my left foot to have a solid contact under my first metatarsal joint. Or put a piece of material under that area to compensate.

Thank for watching. The forefoot is often overlooked, but I will be releasing a video soon (not the next release) to help strengthen the forefoot articulation.
