For such a cryptic and abstract movie with western references like "White Rabbit", I think you two followed along and understood very well. Chi's comment at the end about deja vu being associated with a Matrix glitch was perfect.
@TurntBucket11 ай бұрын
Idk, I think the matrix is pretty straightforward. Especially in a world where videogames (particularly with good graphics and realistic art styles) and VR are commonplace. And with the idea that we could all be living in a simulation becoming a well-known perspective and possibility. When this was released I could see it being more mind-blowing and hard to comprehend. Sure some western references will go over foreign audience's heads but those aren't important to understanding the plot of the story. Maybe some of the themes are strengthened by those references but I don't even think they are essential for that either.
@brendananderson910211 ай бұрын
@@TurntBucketThe Matrix series is constantly making me realize new things. Like I hadn't even considered the Smith agent being like a pc virus later on. And how the agents are like AI programs. So he became like an AI virus. Which seems to be an emerging thing now.
@TurntBucket11 ай бұрын
@@brendananderson9102 I watched the matrix for the first time when I was a preteen in the early to mid 2000's. I understood that Smith was a computer program and that he was going rogue during the scene with Morpheus being tortured. That Smith had his own desires. I didn't know the definition of AI or a basic understanding of what makes AI different from a typical program but I understood that these were intelligent and thinking computer programs. I don't think my experience was particularly unique or that I am particularly insightful. As far as him being a virus. Idk if you can determine if he is a virus in the first movie. It's more like he is just bugged and not performing how the robots intended. My comment was really only about the first movie. Not really important, but I don't ever rewatch the sequels. I treat the Matrix as if it was a standalone movie. That said, that is not the reason why I am only commenting on the first movie. I am only commenting on the first movie because of this video and the original comment.
@CopiousDoinksLLC11 ай бұрын
@@brendananderson9102 It becomes even more of a trip when you stop to consider that Smith first likened humans to a virus himself in the first movie. The possible implication is that, when he was 'overwritten' by Neo at the end, Neo's 'human virus' quality was passed to or imprinted on Smith (which Smith actually says to Neo in the second film).
@theslay6611 ай бұрын
@@CopiousDoinksLLC I think the idea is that, Smith becomes more human, while Neo becomes more machine (Even being able to control them in the real world, and see the machine world even while being blind). The "white rabbit" and "rabbit hole" are referring to the story: Alice in Wonderland. It was written in 1865. There are several characters in that story that are referenced in movies and TV. "Buckle your seat belt Dorthy because Kansas is going bye-bye." Is referring to the story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written in 1900 but most people know the story from the famous movie The Wizard of Oz (1939). You could react to that. It also is referenced in movies and TV but not as much now. All the people they killed in the Matrix are human beings that are plugged in to the Matrix and those humans can be taken over by an agent at anytime. When one agent's human dies that agent can move on to any another human that is plugged in to the Matrix. Re-watching the movie a few times over several years does make it easier to follow.

The Matrix is well known as a mind twister. You are right that it falls in with other theories that reality is in fact a simulation, although the reasons for the simulation are unique in this movie. One of the big philosophies, though, is that you can expand out of the world of rules and constraints if you stop thinking that you are bound to those rules. This was why Morpheus asked Neo if he thought that was air he was breathing. Neo was in the computer simulation, and didn't actually need to breath air in there, so Morpheus was getting him ready for the idea that the rules are arbitrary and shouldn't hold him back. A lot of this type of thinking is the stuff you get in eastern meditation practices, where the belief is that you can transcend your physical form into a Nirvana or some spiritual state.

But those people won't hesitate to kill them, so they have to defend themselves just like they would against any other adversary. At the very least, killing them was a form of releasing them from bondage. It is a point a lot of folks don't quite remember from the film, but an important one, I think, because it highlights how there isn't any kind of war that doesn't have questionable costs.

Agents can move from one human to another. So when they were on the tracks, Agent Smith was going to hold him there until they were both hit. Because it didn't matter of Agent Smith "died". He could just appear in another body. Only the homeless guy would be dead along with Neo. So when Neo got out and only Agent Smith was hit, the homeless guy died. So Agent Smith switched to the body of a person who was on the train, and pulled the emergency stop, then stepped off the train. The same thing was happening at the end during the chase. The agents were moving from one person to the next chasing him faster than he could run. That's why the old lady threw the knife at him. She was chopping vegetables, then Agent Smith took over, and he was still holding the knife. So he threw it at Neo.

19:29 This character, Tank, is played by an man named Marcus Chong. Admittedly, he's a _supporting_ character, but his absence in the sequels is conspicuous. Personally, I liked this character. But the actor did about the _dumbest_ thing he could do during contract negotiations for the sequels. First, he looked at the amount they were offering ($250,000) and said they actually owed him _twice_ that, in addition to guarantees, in writing, that he would be invited to press junkets and premieres. Second, they stopped pursuing him. _That_ much prevented him from playing Tank in _Reloaded_ or _Revolutions,_ but then things just got dumb. He actually started making threatening phone calls to the Wachowskis and they had him arrested and branded as a "terrorist." That was the nail in the coffin for his acting career and that is _so_ incredibly unfortunate. You don't make threatening _phone_ calls; _ever,_ to _anyone._

I don’t think you had any real difficulty at all understanding this movie. You did a great job. You ladies constantly amaze me.

@@72tadrian65 Like hell it is. THEY are the ones who kept saying that they were having difficulty. But their understanding of the plot was great, and they actually speak very good English. These are my favorite reactors. You misunderstood my comment, but I doubt they will.

53:21 "...but it's a little hard for me to understand, but..." Philosophy can be like that. The old joke is that philosophy is the discipline in which all of one's _answers_ are _questioned._

I love The Matrix, it was ahead of its time and the special effect with Neo dodging the bullets is called "bullet time", but they were for a long time afterwards just called "Matrix effects" "Do you think that's air u are breathing?" It is inside a computer system, there is no air there, just impulses to the brain that makes u think that u are breathing air When the oracle said "would you have broken the vase if I hadn't said anything?", she demonstrated that humans and machines are not very different, with the right "input" the expected result can be foreseen, she just gave him the correct input to make him break the vase Later she proved it again, "She told you exactly what you needed to hear", she had given Neo exactly the right "input" needed for him to later make the choice to save Morpheus The oracle also said that Neo would have to make a choice, either he or Morpheus would die, and Neo did die, but by that time he understood the system and connection so well that he was able to "reboot", perhaps by Trinity whispering to him in the real world and he understood that there was very little boundary between his real and digital self

Ok, I am smitten. These 2 are the cutest. I see movies I know on completely different terms through their eyes. Like breathing fresh air.

Fun fact about Cypher, (the “you are a bastard” guy lol) the Wachowski’s actually cast Joe Pantoliano specifically because he could do such a good impression of Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith).

You both did amazingly both watching the film and your analysis afterwards. The Matrix was groundbreaking when it came out and I know I wasn't half as insightful when I saw it the first time. You're right to think that it's a philosophical movie; the directors were very inspired by the concept of Plato's Cave (people are chained in a cave facing the wall and all they can see are the shadows of things projected from behind them - so the shadows are their world, but it's representative of the real world but not ACTUALLY the real world... and philosophers are the ones who can unchain themselves). There are many philosophical theories in the movie and you both picked up on some of them naturally - this was really enjoyable to watch. Love your channel. Also... Cypher IS a bastard! 🤣
