Lots of places have Viking or Anglo Saxon names. When the Normans invaded they couldn't pronounce them so they said it their way. When they named towns themselves (like Beaulieu) the locals couldn't pronounce it so they said it their way. Honestly, unless you're local, you never really know.

Hope this helps. In British English, normally, the word "from" has the short sound for the vowel, like in the words: dock, lock, sock. When you add an "e" it makes the vowel the long sound, as in: loose, moose, goose. So when you add an "e" to "from" it becomes froom, like broom. This isn't set in stone, btw. The English lexicon has words from Roman, Viking, Greek, Anglo saxon, French and German. That's without Scottish, Welsh and Irish. We really are a mongrel nation. Thanks for your uploads, they're great. Hope your visa application doesn't take too long. We need you back in the fold. 👍

I have the most difficulty with place names that are obviously French in origin but which have a well established and decidedly not-French pronunciation, when used in English. Your example in the title was a good example of this. A place near where I live is very obviously a wood (for which the French would be "bois" pronounced "bwa" yet it is pronounced locally as "boys" as in Chesham Bois. The trouble with Welsh arises (a) because a place name can derive as a descriptive sentence yet is concatonated into one word, rather as the Germans do. The other problem for many is that the sound we use in English for letters Y and U can be transposed in some circumstances as in...err Cymru (pronounced "Cumry"

There are rules regarding place names, their origins and pronunciation: Bicester is a Roman Town, like Worcester, Gloucester, Alcester, Towcester and so on. In all cases the 'es' remains silent. The 'cester' bit is a contraction of 'chester' and therefore, anywhere with 'chester' in its name, such as Chester and Godmanchester is also a Roman town. The are others from which Saxon, Viking and Norman origins can be extrapolated. Also, a hamlet is a village without a church. Any place name with 'ham' in the name, was once a hamlet. You can also tell where Royally owned land was, by the term 'langley' being applied. There are others.

@JosephHaig4 жыл бұрын
@@BenjWarrant I bow to your superior local knowledge. I've just checked and Wikipedia (which is obviously the source of all truth) has 'Gumster' as a traditional (and mostly obsolete) pronunciation. I apologize for the confusion, as if the confusion that already exists in the spelling of place-names wasn't enough.

Although in England we talk about the shires or the shire counties and pronounce " shire " as shire, once it is attached to to a specific county such as Yorkshire, Cambridgeshire or Lancashire the " shire " is sounded as sha and is quite clipped. So we have Yorksha, Cambridgesha and Lancasha. Only English speaking foreigners such as North Americans and Aussies sound these county names with the "shire" sound. And another thing, Berkeley as in Berkeley Square in London is pronounced "Barclay as in Barclay's Bank.

The Welsh place name reminded me of a story (probably apocryphal) about a temporary road sign in Wales. In Wales the law requires that all road signs be in both English and Welsh. The workmen needed a special sign giving instructions, but none of them spoke Welsh. Luckily there was a team in the highways department whose job it was to provide translations for just this circumstance. The workmen emailed the team with the wording in English and got a response back from the team in Welsh. They then dutifully copied that text onto the new temporary sign and put it beside their roadworks, much to the amusement of the locals. The Welsh text on the sign translated as "Sorry we are out of the office at the moment, but will get back to you as soon as possible".
