Foreigners' First Impression of Baguio Philippines 🇵🇭 Trying Filipino Pinikpikan

Baguio is pretty much one of the fast pace cities in the philippines. So if you're trying to walk slow to look around, make sure that you're in the side of the street so you won't disrupt the people who has to go somewhere fast. Also some very strict places can get you scolded harshly if you didn't follow how people do things in the area.

A lot of people here in the comments section don’t really know what they’re saying. Some of the people here even labeling the officer as corrupt and inhospitable may have not been here to Baguio. Policemen here in Baguio are some of the most polite and friendliest in the Philippines but at the same time they’re the strictest in implementing the rules and regulations of the city. People here are accustomed to following the traffic rules here especially pedestrian crossings. Its so convenient to use the crossings here as motorists here in Baguio will always yield to you and let you cross as long as you’re on the pedxing. The policeman just panicked because he will be held accountable by his superiors of negligence of duty if something bad happens to you both while crossing that street plus the language barrier. Sure it could have been handled in a better way but in the heat of the moment, your safety is the priority of the officer.

I agree. My dad lived in Baguio for a while. The reason Baguio is Baguio is because the rules are truly enforced. The part of the video shown, it seemed like he just had difficulty communicating. Even though he knows English, he may not necessarily be fluent. It’s unfortunate it happened. Justin and Alina seem like great people. But we see them on the vlog a lot. That’s why it’s easier to sympathize and crucify the enforcer immediately for what he did. But context really is everything in situations like this. Hard to place blame when we didn’t witness it. Like I said in my comment, he may be a bad apple but he also might not be. You’re right. It could have been handled better, regardless.

That is an unfortunate incident. I’m not sure what happened but there’s a possibility he mistook you as a Filipino (Justin) and tried to warn you in the local tongue in the beginning. And thinking you disregarded or ignored what he said, he got a little aggressive. And when he realized that you couldn’t understand Filipino, it was already too late and he resorted to being defensive (of his actions). I notice that trait in a lot of Filipinos coz it’s hard for them to apologize. Regardless, it’s not an excuse for his aggressive physical actions but just showing you what miscommunication or assumption might have happened.

@@merld7451 because he warned them.. like justin said communication is the first thing you should have to do but the problem was that the traffic enforcer probably assume justin is a filipino... they still crossed the streets so he chase them and hold them which is a correct response after you warned them... If the enforcer just let them through then you gotta ask if they are doing their job, why letting jaywalkers get through... i think the enforcer only realized they are foreigner after they are in the middle of the street...

One of the major issues in Baguio City is the traffic, that is why theres a lot of removed crosswalks, constructed foot bridges, and even a lot traffic enforcers on the road to ensure an organized flow of cars. Where you tried to cross is a very busy place that is why you can only cross where he pointed or way further up. Enforcers/police in the city are very strict with pedestrians, which I think is a good thing, but its just so happened that the one you encountered handled it poorly, hoped that he just explained it well to you and have not done unnecessary things. I remember back when I often see enforcers on crosswalks along Session Road, where they chase people crossing on a red signal, just to remind and warn them to not do it again. By the way, the siren you hear came from the City Hall, located just in front of that cafe, rings everyday the same time, reminding the people of the city with peace, unity and discipline. It is also a call for prayer. Feel sorry for the bad experiences you've encountered, hope you still enjoyed your stay in the city and be coming back soon. Take care always guys.

Baguio is very strict with street/pedestrian rules. I was scolded by a traffic enforcer once. I learned my lesson then.

I am a local and an Igorot. and we usually frown upon people. who violates city ordinances. not saying the enforcer was right, he also was being mean disrespectful to the guests. but they also did violated the jaywalking law, when clearly there was no local or other people walking on that part of the road. just follow what the locals are doing to avoid aweful situations next time.

Baguio is also my favourite city in the Philippines. Growing up I remember being always excited preparing for the 6 hour drive and the fun times at the local sightseeing places or even just walking along Session Road, cycling & boating at Burnham Park, slow driving around or mini golf in Camp John Hay, souvenir shopping in Mines View Park, buying Good Shepherd peanut brittle, ube & strawberry jam. The glorious carinderia/turo turo food at Cathy’s. It was fun watching you both tour the city and finding another reason to love the Philippines. I know why Justin was mistreated by that cop/traffic enforcer, it's because he was like a hobo. Just wearing sandals and shorts. You have to know that in the Philippines, they judge you for what you wear. If you look poor, the cops will treat you poor. It's all about clothng nd body language/ how you carry yourself.

They were hired by the city to just man the traffic. Usually, these people are the uneducated, jobless, people. That's why traffic in the Philippines is in total chaos because the one manning are themselves ignorant of the law. They go for the job coz it's easy money. They accost and accost because each ticket they issue, they get a percentage from the fines. True what Justine said, in Metro Manila specially, no one respects these thugs that's why you'd see people trying to do things their own way and be in total defiance of the law.

What you really need to do, this is important. Ask for the Filipino viewers in what to do before proceeding to some place, also with food choices, rentals, hotels/accommodations. We have 7000 islands with 7000 cultures, traditions, practices, its different per island(province) you should take note of this with utmost urgency

Also know that laws and law enforcers are different in each areas around the Philippines. Do not assume that all cities is the same as Manila where jaywalking is a bit too normalized in most streets. In Baguio, they mayor was once a Police chief so he really made law enforcement to be strict around Baguio. Also know that the traffic enforcer assumed you were local so there's that and they are stricter especially on locals

Not really a bad apple if he's just doing his job, I think he just really misunderstood Justin as a local so he really went aggressive. I've seen Baguio police go really rough on lawbreakers. ( I was a kid when a pickpocket robbed my wallet that only has 20 pesos in it, went to a police precinct and got his ass whooped. Me as a child saw it as normal though since criminals = bad). It's especially apparent now since Mayor Magalong was once a Police chief so law enforcement really got pushed up on the agenda mostly because of growing tourists and more people means more chances of lawbreakers being more common.

That is the idea of travelling, learning other countries culture and tradition without judgement. Every country ‘s culture is unique in its own way. Their tradition was handed down from generation to generation with little or no variations Also most of the time language is a barrier so do not get easily offended when people cannot convey what they really mean. Pinikpikan is chicken is usually skinny chicken because they use native chickens (not always), they also torch it to burn the feathers which gives the smokey taste. the noise from the city hall, which is in the direction you were facing is to remind you its 6 pm. give Alina lots of hugs. ❤

I was born and raised in Baguio. My friend and I had been approached the same way, and it was very humiliating. Aside from that, we were also penalized for crossing the wrong way. I do know how upsetting it is to be approached like that, and I am sorry for the experience. From that moment on, we learned our lesson.

No hate, but to be fair, it's not the enforcer's responsibility to tell everyone everything. You should've done some research or just did what the locals do. Although unintentional, you still committed something illegal in those parts. I can understand the high emotion of the enforcer since you could've started a small chaos. Not everyone will respond to gentleness so the enforcer had to be aggressive . Dont take it personally, even the locals are treated like that.

I agree. Dont become accustomed to Filipino practices, like jaywalking. Just because everyone's doing it doesnt mean it's right. However, the enforcer's also in the wrong tho. Here in Cebu there's this spot with high foot and car traffic, and careless jaywalkers are expected. What the enforcers do is if they see someone crossing, they dont stop then halfway. They let them cross safely, call them out with a whistle, then talk to them, either give a warning or fine a penalty. There's a better way to deal with these jaywalkers rather than to pull them from their bags, even if they're angry. People in uniform should never lay hands unless they ask consent.

My Filipino husband bring me in there it was really cold that moment, I wake up at 10am I can't take a bath without heater or my husband boil water for me to take a bath so cold, after 2pm it's fogging like zero visibility as I remember we stay some apartment in BAKAKENG one jeepney ride to market.

Sorry for the bad experience, the traffic enforcer probably thought you are Chinese-Filipino. Strict rules are really implemented here in Baguio specially for pedestrian crossing and some people would point fingers at you for crossing at the wrong spot. Also, for the Pinikpikan the chicken meat(B-Cull) is harder because the chicken used is not the dressed chicken which you usually buy at the supermarkets(the Pinikpikan you ate was probably not beaten to death since that would take along time to prepare). The horn noise is a notice from the city hall every 12 and 6:00 of the day. More power to this channel! 🙌🙌

Thats the City Hall in front of Cafe By The Ruins. The horn rings at 8am for start of work. 12nn for lunch break. 1pm for re-start of work. 5pm for end of work...

Baguio city is the summer capital because in other places like Manila,it's hot during summer so they go to cold places like Baguio Baguio city is full of people during summer from mid if march to April ..so get ready for traffic and for accomodations

I'm from baguio.we use fire to remove the feathers that make the pinikpikan smells good and we put a lot of ginger because the weather is very cold to makes our body warm.

Pinikpikan and Tinola are quite similar, the main difference is the chicken. Pinikpikan has a smokey flavor. If you go to Farmers daughter restaurant, you could taste the real thing. welcome to Baguio. ❤ sorry for the bad experience 😔

It happened to me in HONGKONG,,, a guy bumped me,I’m just standing on the side of the sidewalk, and he is very angry to me like want to hit me,, luckily my patience strike and i take a deep breath.I said to my self 1 more shout on my face and I hit him in the FACE like manny pacquiao punch 🥊... There is actually a pedestrian near that area maybe you haven't seen it. and where you cross was a big "no" bec of heavy traffic even locals dont cross there. In Baguio you just have to follow rules, i guess the police is wrong to touch you but it could be he's offended and worried for your safety. i hope it wont give a big negative affect on your tour. Try the outskirts of Baguio as well, Cordillera can give you impressions you won't get to other places of the country.

We use native chicken for Pinikpikan that's why there's really little meat because native chickens are much leaner than the usual market chicken. The meat is also harder because these chicken are used to roaming around the surroundings, making their meat tougher but tastier compared to the regular white chicken. But yeah, mostly pinikpikan is a good partner for rice wine and we consume most of the soup that's made out of it. As for beating the chicken, most don't do that anymore since it takes a bit more time. But yeah, it's an acquired taste to really like it. I think you both would have loved Bagnet instead. As for the incident, I hope you would still enjoy your stay. It is really not proper to touch you even if you did wrong by teying to cross there and I'm sure it was a shock. He could have communicated more properly. Good and bad experiences really happens with good and bad people and I'm sure you will never forget Baguio because of it. Yes, it's negative but I hope it will not affect how you the city and its people in general. Thank you for visiting our city and trying out our dishes at your first day of visit. P.S. You can try visiting Atok flower farms and Sagada Caves from there. And in Baguio, Mt. Costa and Arca's Yard are good too. Not sure about the cost these days though. I haven't been home for almost 4 years now. Viscoz's Strawberry Shortcake is a must try.🥰🥰🥰

Bumping other shoulders on the road is not in the Philippines only, it happens to me in other big cities in other countries as well and they just don't apologized too. They just hit you. My son also was telling me that when he was in the street in London with his friend and someone bigger than them hit on their shoulders and just walk away😊, so just enjoy your stay in Baguio and i will continue on watching all your videos.

Go to Sagada!~~ See the hanging coffins there totally different culture from the south Philippines! You might also want to visit La trinidad Benguet (Strawberry Fields), few mins- an hour away from Baguio City, Benguet!

I think the chicken that's served with the pinikpikan is a native chicken. Native chicken here tends to have harder bones and not a lot of meat; it also has quite tough skin, but it's considered a delicacy here, at least that's what we call it from where I'm from since a well-established café or restaurant wouldn't serve just the remains of it since that'd be quite rude...

Because it is not uniformedly followed in the entire Philippines. What do you expect from tourists that get used to chaotic cities like Metro Manila, Cebu and others and then suddenly have to adjust to another set of rules. Be like Singapore and not Hongkong. Put up signs and enforced the rules across the country. Stop bribes. Penalize both parties-the giver and the receiver.

Sorry about the incident that you experienced there its a rare and isolated case. You thought of Baguio as somehow like Manila because its a city but actually its far different from Manila. Baguio is very strict with their pedestrian lanes, traffic rules, terminals and jeepney stops. You will even find it amazing that taxi drivers give exact change because tbey only charge for exact fare,Baguio is known for that. Baguio is known to be tje summer capital of the Phillippines but it is not the coldest place here, you have to go higher rjan Baguio. If you want experience more of its country side vibe that is cold visit Benguet, Sagada and Banaue and you will love it, youll also see more westerns there. Anyways despite the unfornate incident that you have experienced in Baguio, I hope that you will not take it as whole. Theres alot of good things that you may still experience there. i think u were jaywalking and it seems u ignored the traffic enforcer's warning thats why he got a bit aggressive. he mentioned "fine/ticket" and "pedestrian lane" and pointed u to the foot bridge. baguio is a bit strict with their traffic rules, if u havent noticed, people are obidient there, using pedestrian lanes and foot bridges most of the time. i guess just "do what the romans do" to avoid penalty. may also treat this as a lesson that other cities/provinces, although under 1 country, may have diffrent ways rules and regulations. keep safe and always vigilant.

Traditional pinikpikan is made from native chicken, not broilers so it's less meaty and tougher. It doesn't look traditionally made because if it's beaten the meat gets kind of dark with blood coagulation. Did you get any etag in your portion? Maybe it was too small. Salt pork isn't something you make for the taste anyway---it's to preserve what you butchered. Anyway, Cafe by the Ruins is indeed quite pricey and not always worth it. I do like their camote bread.

please also check city ordinances of places you are visiting. Baguio has an anti distracted walking ordinance, prohibiting the use of gadgets while crossing the streets or sidewalks, so maybe the officer was caught by surprise suddenly seeing you crossing at the wrong part of the road while you were filming. also when walking sidewalks and footbridges stay right always , most tourists fail to observe this ..

'"PINIKPIKAN" is a famous recipe in the cordillera region which is a chicken with vegetable soup similar to tinola. The unique preparation is somewhat bizarre, and can be quite offensive to some animal lovers. It all starts by hanging the chicken by the feet and is beaten with a stick and is referred to as "pikpik" until its blood coagulates under the skin, and once the poor chicken is limp, a single hard blow to the head is delivered to end its life. Next, the chicken feathers is burned off in an open flame, and any remaining feathers is removed by hand. It is by this process that gives the distinct flavor of the pinikpikan. The chicken is then cut into pieces and cooked in a similar fashion to that of tinola.

Alina was talking about the former Mayor of Baguio in 12:50. The Mayor was June Labo, he is not a foreigner as Alina mentioned but he was married to a Russian woman which i think was a Russian lawyer. Labo met her during his visits to Russia. Labo was a very charismatic individual hence won the mayoralty in Baguio despite coming from another region and despite being a faith healer which of course a job not aligned to politics. Mayor Labo became notorious of his faith healing trips in Russia as he was later discovered to be fake. I guess there were wealthy Russians desperate to heal off from their illnesses that they've tried these sorts of healing. Labo is a shrewed businessman, but he also, I guess, pocketed millions from his wealthy clients from being a faith healer. Well, these stories are not 100% sure, though. It's just stories shared to me when I lived there. He was in politics so intrigue surrounded him. Just sharing what I know 🙏 😊

That is not a culture rather an attitude issue. Public servants should have high level of calmness specially in tourist spot/destination. Baguio is tourist spot so expect tourist. Baguio police are very strict, they arre the most strict disctrict in the Philippines and I believe thats the only actual place in the Philippines that jaywalking littering and drinking in public will get you a ticket and public service work

Not public service just fine a thousand pesos or thousands. One case was there was a S. Korean student who smoked in public who were caught by a police officer. He was transported by a police car to police station and fined a thousand peso. He said he didn't know the rules but his friends knew so his friends were laughing at him for being caught and he was so upset. Just an example so better know the rules here before you come in this city. ❤

It happens everywhere she is just a cry baby. Go to Korea too you will also experienced that. My korean students said in south korea people dont say sorry when they bump you shoulder to shoulder. So it came from their mouths already they said South Koreans are rude on the streets.They said people in Baguio City are really kind because when they bump you unintentionally they say sorry. So they just compared I was not even asking them just their observation so they like Baguio City a lot. Some of them don't wanna go home 😅😅😅 Locals will say sorry here in Baguio. Maybe those were local tourists 😂😂😂

Here in Philippines, in general almost every single person are usually friendly, polite, humble, soft spoken and kind. But then there is the latter and the "traffic" enforcers/police are one of those. So be wary of them. They might be just doing their job but they can be very very rude, acts like a gangster if you happen to be in a confrontation with them and most of them are corrupt as well (instead of giving you a ticket will ask you for money). I am not saying all of them but definitely most of them. But in certain cities or province here in PH, they are just really strict but still polite like in Subic.

You must be very careful if you are in the province. If in Manila you can just cross anywhere but not in other places/provinces, you need to cross on a pedestrian lane. The traffic enforcer was maybe surprise why did you cross the road, that's why he grabbed your backpack and maybe he thought you're a Filipino and not following traffic rules. They will going to issue a ticket/fine. It's for your safety also, if you are not minding/following the traffic rules, cars will hit you. Anyway enjoy your stay in Baguio, just stay safe always. By the way, we have traffic enforcers because in some areas there's no traffic lights.

Red rice is healthier than white rice. An authentic pinikpikan is like what you mention oh how they are killed and then burn the chicken. The soup of pinikpikan should be a lil black because of the burned skin. So, you can taste the burned skin, ginger and salt in the soup and of course the etag (either sun dried or smoked pork). Regarding the traffic enforcer, I am sorry with what you experienced there but surely they are just doing their job. It was just the approach was quite off but I am sure he did not mean harm.

Baguio needs to educate their government police regarding vlogger visitors. This incident may be a blessing in disguise for their local government to add sidewalk walkways along those said areas. The learning point here is for traffic police to be re-educated how to communicate the street rules and not to stereotype visitors. Otherwise, it's a very nice place with low crime rate. I've been there before. Enjoy.

Witnessed so many tickets when Mayor Magalong really pushed strictness in our city. Man I wish, Baguio can closed for a while just like Boracay to make nature heal and ease some of the traffic.
