If it's getting too hot in South India, you can go to Himalayan regions like Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. They are very popular summer destinations. For example, Shimla in Himachal Pradesh used to be the summer capital of British Raj. You'd unfortunately have to leave Pete temporarily though and take Trains or Flights.

You know, the real India probably doesn't revolve only around the tourist season. So what if the heat keeps the tourists away, and the beaches are deserted. That is India too. It seems to me that the places where you have the best interactions with the Indian people are where the tourists are not. I grew up in a small seaside town in Wide Bar (area) in Queensland (Australia) in the 70's. The defining moments of growing up in this area was not the tourist seasons, Sure, tourism was very important for the local economy, but it was the day to day struggles and triumphs that defined that place for me.
