While living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we tried Musang King, the best quality durian in the world! Often referred to as the "king of fruits" in South East Asia, durian is controversially known for it's strong odor. Some say it smells like “heaven,” while others argue that it smells more like like rotten onions, bad body odor, and raw sewage. Musang King is considered by most to be the best variety of durian with its distinct bittersweet taste.
This durian shop is called City Durian Specialist, and it is located in the Jalan Alor backspace area in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Utter hogwash! I ate durian then drank some beers after. No discomfort nor did I died! Always someone said...or there was this story about.... Have they actually seen it happened? It's "heaty" because it's rich in protein. Metabolising protein even in meat generates heat in the body and increases heart rate (tachycardia). There is absolutely no plausible reason one can die from eating durian with alcohol. However, one CAN die from just consuming alcohol alone without even eating durian! Makes sense? Most heart attacks occur after a heavy meal (higher metabolism rate). Maybe that poor guy just had a heart attack from consuming too much durian. This is a more logical and plausible explanation. This is only my 2 cents.

Wasn't a huge fan of Durian but give me Nasi Lemak and Sarawak Laksa and I'll eat it for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Great video. Malaysia is my favourite country to visit, heading back there soon! 😀

In Malaysia, it is common among the different races to classify food into two classes,either heaty or cooling stuff. Durians are heaty. Rambutans and mangoes too. Mangosteen and Coconut water is cooling. Coffee hot or cold is heaty. Tea hot or cold is cooling.

Durian and alcohol is bad idea so is durian and soda/cola. My father who didn’t have any serious illness ate durian with coke and when he came home he feels dizzy and nearly passed out while climbing the stairs. Its probably because the combo suddenly increase your blood pressure. If you a have hyper tension, diabetic or gouts don’t take too much durian, it can aggravates your situation. While durian heats up the body fruits that cools it down are mangosteen and coconuts juice. If you have a fever drinks a lot of coconut juice to bring it down.

The fact is, mostly durian in singapore came from Malaysia.. it imposible for Singapore to produce own durian for commercial 😅😅😅 season in Malaysia so it will be durian “singapore season”... so technically u eating durian actually Malaysia durian.. lol

Most of the durians in the stalls are from young durian trees, from 6-15 years old. They are mostly sweet and some with a bit of bitter taste according to the variety. If you want to try another level of durian taste with different varieties, you should try durians from old tree and organic one, old means from 40 years old tree and above. Even with same variety, durian at different age of tree taste differently and the flavor is good within 8 hours. And best taste within 1 hour or 2 hours, once it ripe and drop, the fragmentation process starts, and it is all about natural chemical process within. For old tree durians over 8 hours and more, it becomes sweet at the end of fragmentation process, it turns to sugar or fructose. For overnight durian, it usually become watery and not good to consume. Majority of the durians sold at durian stalls, already exceed 8 hours, no longer fresh. But if it is young tree, not much different as it basically just sweet taste. Here are some videos to illustrate further. Musang king variant has a deeper richer taste, dryer and firmer texture compared to others which may just be sweet. Before these hybrids, durians from every tree gave different taste and texture. It was simply an adventure opening up each durian back then. Nowadays, these hybrids have their own distinct taste that can cater to various preferences. Best to eat durian during colder days.

U guys are fantastic, willing to try out the king of the fruits. There are many varieties in Malaysia, each to their own liking, some prefer Musang King, some prefer XO, Red Prawn, etc etc....try each one of it and taste the difference. There is no scientific proof that drinking liquor while eating durian can be fatal, but best to heed the advice and not to mix them Also, u can try durian cakes, durian pancakes, durian candies, durian ice cream.....happy trying

The durians you tried in Singapore are also from Malaysia, probably the ones you try in China too if you did try it there. Different region in Malaysia produce different kind of durian, Musang King and Black Thorn are the 2 most priced durian now and highly exported to mainland China. Musang King is produced in alot of places but the best for some would be from Raub, Pahang. While Black Thorn I believe is mostly produced in the north region like Penang. The taste and texture differs each durian because of the weather of different region, especially rain. Do try the different kinds, some cheaper ones are great too like red prawn, D24, D101, tek ka etc etc..love seeing foreigners give it a go!

i just want to say after watching your videos, you guys are definitely different and awesome compared to other vloggers because you really take your time to immerse yourself in the local culture and present good facts and tips, which show that you've done your research before just uploading videos for the sake of content creation. (Like for example you point out tips like how to identify a real musang king durian based on the pointed star shape at the base of the durian, these are just little bits and pieces of trivia but really shows that you took your time to learn and appreciate the experience and share it with us). Thank you for your time and efforts to produce your videos, its very refreshing to see and much needed wholesome content for me because of the current situation in the world with travel restrictions and lockdown, i feel like i get to see and experience great stuff again even though i'm stuck in my country. The one you had in Singapore is JW black label, mustang king in Malaysia is royal salute.thats the difference.

Heaty is not like rising the body temperature. All fruits do have natural sugar. Its because the durian have an intense concentration of natural sugar per fruit. Even the longan or rambutans if you eat too much of them will cause you to lose your voice and feverish. Its because of the natural sugar that caused "heat" till one's voice getting sore and feel like you getting a fever.

Kudos to both of you ! Yes... eat fresh durian . Not frozen type. As what some people suggested, do not wear gloves cos you’ll have to feel the durian with your bare hands.. & oh yeah it’s finger~licking good 👍. We, in Singapore, are happy that Malaysian durians which are the BEST comes here in lorry loads. Been a durian fan since young . Am now in my 70s.

Hi Greetings from Kuala Lumpur really superb and enjoying watching your videos eating durian while in Singapore and KL Malaysia basicaly your body will bit warmy when you eating a lots maybe 2 or 3 and maybe more for those who 1st time eating durian and for durian lover 2 or 3 are normal for them and would like to share some good tips to avoid your body getting warm after eating durian is to pour a drinking water into the empty husk of the fruit and drink it or a pinch of salt into drinking water also can cool down your body. Hope this tips help you.Hope you guys coming back to Malaysia after the Pandemic is getting better. Cheers

I love my rambutan and jackfruit chilled too. You have to try cempedak. It's like jackfruit but it's SO much sweeter. Each piece of fruit is smaller and rounder than a jackfruit.

Durian has a very high calorific value so it is advisable not to eat durian with alcohol... the alcohol can react with the durian ( heaty) and it may raise the sugar level in your blood...for those with diabetes it is also advisable to take it sparingly and moderately...

Here in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo we have so much varieties of durian. From white, yellow, orange, red and even purple flesh durians. Wild durians (orange and red flesh) are very sought after here. The taste can vary from tasteless (usually durian variety that is used for cooking), mildly sweet, sweet, very sweet or bittersweet. 25:44 The miracle berry (Synsepalum dulcificum) tree. The "rosemary" is actually roselle.

'Duri' is thorn; so the fruit is called Durian - thorny fruit Rambut is hair; so the fruit is called Rambutan - hairy fruit

Its not alcohol in general that should not be mix. Its hard liquor like Brandy that should not be mixed. Beer is cooling and its fine...in moderate. Musang king has small seed...one of its trait. Glad u enjoy. Do try the various other 'species' like D101, Red Prawn, Kampung, etc to find your fave. They are different in its own way

The bitter helps to contrast the sweetness of the durian, also, musang king is famous for having smaller seeds compared to other variety. A good durian is light, holo/echoing when you tap the shell before opening. A clear sign is the freshness of the top end of the stem, if the stem is greenish, it is fresh, if it is dry and dehydrated the durian is old (dropped for a while). It is good to have mangosteen with durian.

Basically, Durian in Singapore are collected from Malaysia farms in the early morning and transported to Singapore by afternoon. So they are almost as fresh as eaten in Malaysia. Usually there are two reasons why some people don't like Durian : (1) preconceived mindset (2) tried poor quality Durian at the first try. Balancing price and quality, Musang King is the best choice. Black Thorn is better and more pricy, but the taste is almost similar to Musang King, so no point spending extra money, except for experiencing it. Similarly, starters can try Red Prawn, D24, D101 which are cheaper and taste nice too. Just don't go for those that are comparably very cheap. Durian is indeed a heaty fruit, just like the Longan and Lychee. I would drink a glass of honey after taking Durian, for cooling down. Of course, a bit of alcohol is alright. Everything in moderation is fine. For Rambutans, good to ask for those where the meat does not stick to the seed. Otherwise, you will keep eating the white part of the seed, which is woody.

Nice watching you guys try durian. It's a Malaysian favorite... It's very addictive. Jack fruit also has a very strong smell. The people who loves durian normally would like Jack fruit too. Question, do you think your friends back home would also enjoy Durian if they visited Malaysia?

Musang King is good with small seed. It is not the best but 2nd place. The best variety is called the "Black Thorn". The colour is orangy colour.

Firm or wet depends on how long it has fallen from the tree and how well they store the durian. As South East Asia is a humid region, durians will get wet/moist/mushy fast or when it is not stored well (left on the ground) as it absorbs moist fast.

When I ate durian the first time, I also find it strange even as a Singaporean myself. After trying various types, I much prefer musang king, d13, d24 the ones that are fresh and yellow yolk egg coloured. They seemed to be more sweeter and creamier. You guys look cute eating it like that. 😅

Having alcohol with durian does not kill you but it does have a reaction which may not be suitable to sensitive tummies. Its like mixing your alcohol drink with another type of alcohol. In my opinion, Black Thorn tops all other durian types including Musang King? Black Thorn has an initial taste (floral) the moment you take a bite and the texture of the fruit inside is orange. It has another elevation in taste and is expansive. Most times this particular type is not available due to demand.

If you get to try D24, do that. Its better for durian newbies. Its creamier, sweet(not bitter), and some say its like icecream or pudding

For the rambutans, all you need to do is to just twist the rind, and you will get it open. As for the rambutan and the seeds, if the seeds are clingy that means they are not very fresh. The fresh rambutans are usually a bit crunchy and the meat will just come off the seed easily.

Heaty and Cooling are based on the Chinese principle of yin and yang. foods like durian, ginger, are considered heaty while others like cucumber, water melon, barley are considered as cooling. Food is like medicine and you eat according to your bodily needs.

I’m not a fan of durian.. but my mom used to cook the unsweetened ones with sugar into a paste which taste great eaten with bread.. Rambutan is my favourite. You can make jackfruit fritters or pancake... the seed is edible if you boil it..

Singapore Durian come from Malaysia, Singapore do not have durian orchard or farm. most food come from Malaysia, Indonesia and others. most food in Singapore is Malaysian and Indonesian origin.

the distinctive quality of the Musang king on the exterior is the brown star at the bottom of it . the inside is the flat seed which makes it has more flesh and thicc

Generally speaking, it is not recommended to take carbonated drinks with durian. Durian provides a lot of heat in your stomach, heat plus gas is never a good combination (in human body at least).

tht quality of rambutan flesh clinging to the seed or not, in malay, it's called 'lekang' (for not clinging). that's the quality of a good rambutan, usually, tho non-lekang ones can be decent too.

The last tree he showed you is called miracle berry or sweet berry, scientific name is synsepalum dulcificum. It is very rare and I have tried it once. It activates the sweet taste buds on your tongue and makes everything taste sweet even the most sour fruit, belimbing buloh (averrhoa bilimbi).

Yeah I like it. Nods head. Looks for place to gingerly set down half eaten durian :) You can try other varieties of durian such as XO, D24 and Udang Merah. You can also try kampung durians which are non commercial and therefore are like wild cards as you will not really know what to expect in terms of taste. That plant was indeed a curry leaf plant used to make curries or impart a curry flavor to dishes. The other plant I think the seller was referring to is the miracle berry which makes everything taste sweet. Other locally grown fruits you guys might want to try include cempedak, papaya, dragon fruit and harum manis mangos if they are in season.

You can deep fry the jackfruit with flour, it'll be crunchy and very sweet. They sell it at jalan alor if you notice

I always prefer Musang king eat with hot cook white fragrant rice .eat like sushi,always my family first choice,so tasty.prefer the bitter Musang King,but Musang king also have A or b grade,big price difference,price this season Grade A RM58,Grade B RM30-38 now Musang king seed flat andw small, Next time you can try duku langsat,I prefer duku langsat compared to rambutan. Durian is heaty fruit,after eat more durian we will drink some salt drink to reduce heat,or use the durian shell to drink water to reduce heat and clean our hand,after scrub and clean hand from durian shell,the hand smell will gone

There are study that said high amount consumption of durian may increase the blood pressure for 2-5 hours, so thus the alcohol. Maybe that's why it is not recommended to drink alcohol after eating durian. Not to mention, durian contain quite a high amount of sugar.

After eating durian, try to drink 1 cup of warm water + 1 teaspoon salt.. And drink lots of plain water after that.. Works for me tho..

If u go to sabah side,u should try their fruit ...there ‘s one fruit that u not easy to get in kl side...it’s call TARAP...the smell ,trust me .........can kill the durian fragrance if u put them together 😂 but the taste was super duper nice,tasty,delicious ...they also hv a season for tarap...u should try ,and u’ll love that

Both Durian and Rambutan are named after the characteristic of their outer skins. DURI means the THORNS in Malay whereas RAMBUT means the HAIRS.

While everyone else was waxing lyrical about Musang King, here is a little titbit about the Chinese song in the background while Chris was eating the durian. It's a song with Chinese lyric sang by an American from the mid-west, Christine Welch, (A Million Possibilities) certainly deserve waxing lyrical too.

Just on 14 Aug, a Thai man was found dead after he had durian with white wine. However the news article clarified the issue regarding having alcohol and durian together: “There is no scientific evidence to show that this is a lethal combination. It is more likely to cause bloating, indigestion and discomfort as your liver has to work extra hard to metabolise both fats and sugars in the durians and the alcohol, especially if you have consumed both in excessive amounts.” But I mean, why take the risk right? Waiting for the next vid guys 🙂

have you tried boiling the jack fruit pit. boil it with a pinch of salt... you know the seed is boiled by testing the boiled seed with a fork. if it's soft, it's right to eat.

There's the "durian soap" which refers to the seeds. When washing your hands, rub the seeds with your hands & water. I used to do that & believe it works.

For durian first time tester,should goes for the kampung durian,Then gradually goes for the higher grade. Likes d24 n so on.

keep on eating durian. the more you eat the more you will like it. different clone will taste different. either milky, bitter, garlicy try find durian kampung (village), durian bukit(hill),durian hutan(forest)... dont jump into conclusion either you like or not at first time trying.. like I say.. more you eat, you will like more

you can eat durian and drink alcohol but cant drink too much cuz your stomach will be boated with gases. because here got 2 or 3 cases foreigner worker (nepali) dead because of drink to much after ate durian.

It isn't a joke on the durian and alcohol, it's actually the chemical rection between the 2 which make it deadly. Btw, is not only alcohol, you are also not supposed to have fresh milk as well after eating durian. There were some casualties reported in malaysia and thailand whereby foreigners are not aware about durian with alcohol and fresh milk issues.

Pour some water into the durian carpel and drink from it , it'll help avoid feeling feverish . As well as wash your hand with the water that pass through the durian skin (outer needle-like layer) , can help remove some smell of the durian .

Reading some of the comments here make me feel I am in the Comedy Hour, housewives tales or not, it doesn't matter as all I care is it brings laughter and laughter is the best medicine. Yes, alcohol and durian do not mix unless you want to float home to Georgia without actually flying. But having said all these, the only truism is never use an unopen durian as a seat when you are tired. It will definitely make a mark on you, and you know where. LOL.

Yes, only Musang King has a unique 5 star design at the tip and does not smell too strong compared to the lesser durians. It should be bitter sweet in taste.

The smell was not so strong because it was very fresh. The smell gets stronger as time passes and the self-fermenting accelerates. That is why advisable not to drink alcohol as it will speed up the process in the stomach, hence produces more 'heat'.
