7 жыл бұрын

After the Second World War, soldiers from across the Baltics who had fought on both sides of the war disappeared into the forests to wage Europe's bloodiest guerrilla war against the occupying Soviet forces.
"Forest Brothers - Fight for the Baltics' includes interviews with former partisan fighters and those who supported them and dramatic battle scene recreations and interviews with modern-day Special Forces of Lithuania, the direct descendants of the Forest Brothers.

My grandad brother Stanislovas was a forest brother and died in 1953 near small lituanian city Meskuiciai. In this battle against soviet NKVD troops died 18 lithuanian patriots. Rest in peace, heroes.

I was working the other day here in Canada with a young man from Latvia, he was surprised I knew where that was. Of course I do I told him and went on to tell him about how I knew of the Baltic States & Finlands fight for freedom from the Soviets in the last century. It is sad that Russia, the largest country on earth, is such a bully. For Russia truly to be great, they will respect the freedom of their neighbors.

@Hans S No, it's different. What USSR had before was Stalin's power hungry "communism". Many ideas such as gulags and countless repressions weren't written in the manifesto, and rather, any blockage of freedom to communists was opposed. Problem was that it's simply wasn't achievable with peaceful ways. An ideology that on paper sounds amazing but in practice is basically impossible to achieve.

Reaction to this from the Russians is funny because it shows how clearly schizophrenic they are: on the one side, they claim that they broke up with the Soviet legacy yet they clearly defend it fiercely, on the one side they claim Soviet Union was international and not just Russian, yet they take every criticism of the USSR VERY personaly. Also typical is that when you speak about Katyn or some Soviet occupation or massacres, Russians are always like "it was not us Russians, it was the SOVIETS, it was collective responsibility", but when its about Space programme, Soviet sports or victory in WW2, suddenly they claim EVERYTHING Soviet was in fact Russian.

It's sad that they fought so hard but weren't able to drive the Soviets out of their country. I guess in the end they were successful because the Baltics are now independent and with NATO they will be protected in the future. 👍
