Anders Wilkes is a self-reliant small-scale forest owner who has started working with environmentally friendly forestry methods, focusing on selective logging without clear-cutting.
In this video, he explains how you can achieve a sustainable economy on your small-scale farm by thinking differently. This winter, he spent two weeks selectively logging a stand of trees, measuring the top diameter of all timber logs from the 29 trees he harvested. He describes the time it took to cut the trees with a chainsaw, transport them with a tractor and logging trailer, and the hourly rate he achieved.
Additionally, he delivers a clear message on how to establish a local economy where everyone utilizes the resources available in the vicinity, from the forest and trees to the owner of a band sawmill, and onwards to those who need timber for various purposes, such as building a greenhouse.
Anders provides a comprehensive description of how he wants to manage his forest under the conditions he has and how he envisions his life. This video delves deeply into the method of selective logging and what environmentally friendly forestry means for different types of forest stands.
Anders' main activity is vegetable cultivation on his farm just outside Älekulla in the southwest corner of Västra Götaland. He lives there with his wife and two children and, in addition to vegetable cultivation, raises sheep, a few mountain cows, ducks, and chickens.
The 28-hectare forest is one of several income streams for the small-scale farm.
