Despite what happened that day (and these accounts are a fair reflection I think), Wolves were a pretty good firm in the 70s, and if they had taken the sort of crew they took to Stoke and west mids clubs, they might have made a better fist of it. Make no mistake though, it was a terrifying day for the Wolves fans that were there, though there weren't many at Forest that day. Everyone has an off day when there just aren't many lads there and similarly I saw many come unstuck at Molineux in the 70s. For this particular match, we had just been relegated from the top flight and had had two uninspiring draws for the first two games of that 2nd division season. Make no mistake though, Forest deserved their tough rep in the midlands back then, but they didn't batter us the year after at their place when we took a lot more lads. Personally, I was more impressed with Forest at Molineux for the return fixture - hard as nails and Wolves couldn't budge the 6000 Forest lads. The Wolves South Bank was not for the faint-hearted at that time, though let me make it clear, I am not claiming Wolves were like the London firms or Manchester/Liverpool clubs, but Wolverhampton was a tough place back then, just on a smaller scale. There was over 30,000 there and Wolves lads were out in force, but Forest were game as they come. So much respect to Forest.

I happened to miss this game as it was just before I started work. After this game I earnt enough money to follow Wolves away to every ground for the next 2 years. 1976-7 was a very memorable season for me. Chelsea was bad but Wolves held their ground. Millwall was the only no-show with the Wolves lads, I was there wearing my scarf and got a bit intimidated but I didn't get done. Cardiff was rough, outnumbered at Southampton. All the other away games I think Wolves fans had the upper hand. I was done over at Oldham (in a phone box!) for refusing to give my scarf. But my worst-ever football experience was at Blackpool that same season. I was slapped and thrown out by a senior officer for 'looking at him'. A season to remember supporting Wolves!

Wolves sure came unstuck that day, I felt sorry for some of them, there was no respite for them in any area of the ground or outside. But everyone has an off day, I was at West Ham that year was Forest got well sorted and some had to escape down the tunnel, so it happens to everyone, no one has ever been invincible no matter what you read about some firms, legends in their own lunchtimes!

That season in division 2 league games only 5 clubs had their fans in the South Bank. Chelsea and Forest brought lots, Notts, Cardiff, Millwall smaller numbers but vocal fans who I could see clearly from the North Bank opposite. The rest, their fans stayed quiet. I missed 3 home games with Burnley, Oldham and Southampton then after that I didn't miss another home game until 1979.

That 1976/7 season I just missed the first 2 Wolves away games at Sheffield and Forest then didn't miss an away match for 2 years. if Wolves took 2,000 to Forest that day it's well below average for that season. With the exception of Millwall away, Wolves took an impressive away following to all the other away games that season including 8,000 at Bristol Rover and Bolton. Even the long midweek journeys to Southampton and Carlise I would say there were at least 2,000.

Forest had some bad lads back then. I remember a young Boro fan getting killed in fight with them outside Ayresome park around 1980. Tragic.

That game at Middlesbrough finished Forest for a few years alot of their top boys (Chaps) went to prison for it. They had a good mob that year The Mad Squad, and were starting to get organised like West Ham. I think a few years later the Executive Crew were formed at Forest.

I was there that day. Hooliganism was at its height. Every weekend a train was wrecked by different fans. The West Ham Inter City Firm were the most famous in that era. Skinheads, Crombie Boys. Idiots, everyone. I wonder if they are still as thick as old men. We gave Chelsea the Trent End and made us Trent Enders use the East Stand. Many of us never returned to the Trent End.

That may of been the season Forest fans left the ground and smashed the Wolves coaches while the game was being played. I remember watching it happen from the back of the old kop.The Forest fans threw stones off the old railway bridge (Lady bay bridge)into the car park.

Forest was a well dodgy place to go in the seventies. Although they came massively unstuck at Newcastle in the same decade. For years after the Geordies would taunt rival fans with the chant "remember nottingham forest".
