Christmas Eve 2024 , just got back from putting flowers on my mum and dad's grave. Thought I’d watch this . Been crying since the shower the Micky Thomas goal. My dad and I went to all be 2 home games that year. Me mum watched the last game at home with me . Never forget that season and that game. What a great time. Nothing like a Scotsman leading at the trenches. I worked as a driver few years back and picked up George graham. As a Liverpool fan, I explained that night to him and he couldn't believe it lol. I asked him about smiths goal and he said it was a definite goal. I told him I was just a kid watching it on itv and after the 1st goal, there was a massive power cut in my area so I missed the ending and thought that we won it until my schoolmate called me up and told me different. I told George maybe it was a good omen having the power cut to not experience that level of heartache as a kid. He was lovely and let me have a couple of pictures with him. This story what arsenal did was just biblical. Dalglish always said arsenal were everyones 2nd team. Football back then was better. The emotions were just so real. Miss growing up...❤

@@stevensmith426 Yeah, very sad, Mr Devine never got to see justice done. It's disgusting the way this remains brushed under the carpet to this day. Rocky was an inspiration to a lot of people, he was a hero to the folk from his estate in London, including one Ian Wright who he helped put on the straight and narrow to become a pro-footballer too. Fantastic player, good man, will always be loved by the Arsenal faithful. He did do quite well at Leeds, but by that time I think Don Georgio Graham had burned his legs out.

The greatest day of my Arsenal supporting life (since 1971) it says it all when people like Wrighty and Henry who weren't even involved with the team at the time are praising it and commenting on it as a historical achievement. It was absolutely everything to me especially in that season that was blackened by the unlawful killing of football supporters at Hillsborough. Football changed after that night. Some changes for the better and some not so good but I will never forget it.

A year or two after winning The Double with Arsenal Ray Kennedy went on to play a part in a hugely successful era with Liverpool under Bob Paisley.

Not a gooner but I was there that night with a friend, his mate couldnt go so he rang me and asked if I fancied going to Anfield. "Erm, YES!!" was my reply so we drive up there and experienced the greatest football moment ever. I still have the Arsenal shirt he gave me to wear and I have to say the Liverpool fans were magnificent that night, remember it was six weeks after Hillsborough and emotions were through the roof. Outside the ground I must have hugged about fifty Liverpool fans who were in tears but so so gracious, a night I will take to my grave. JFT97, eternally xx

My family have been following this wonderful, incredible football club since the 1920’s. I was at Anfield that night, I was 18 yo - I remember speaking to the coach steward wen we were boarding to get back Highbury , he said, whilst crying ‘ I was at white hart lane in 71, but tonight , tonight this beats that’ I just hugged him. Brilliantly made film! I was watching it in my house in Manchester with five mates, all United fans, all of them rooting for me and the Gunners. One of my really good mates was sat next to me and he kept telling me in the last 20-30 minutes that Arsenal would get the second goal. I so wanted to believe him. I think he genuinely felt it coming from the way we were playing, and of course he could see things differently to a Gunner or Liverpool fan! Extra bit of anecdote: We had gone to the pubs beforehand, and as we were walking back to my house I really wanted to bet a tenner on us winning the title - from memory we were 8/1, but it would have meant missing the kick off, so I didn't make the bet. After the game I was in an ecstasy I don't ever recall having before that, and we all headed back to the pubs. I was the only Gunner around, and everybody was chuffed for me! I had been supporting Arsenal since 1974, so it was 'my' first big win in 15 years! And we so nearly went unbeaten two years later, just one defeat I think, and that was at Chelsea and if my memory is right we were one up at half time and Bould went off injured. We let in two goals second half, and that was the only 45 minutes Bould didn't play that season. If my memory is right!

I lived in Phuket Thailand. I went to my friends open restaurant. She had put a small TV set behind the bar for me to watch the match. There were several Thais supporting Liverpool. I sat on the lounge chair drinking beer and watched the game! Unreal as it went! Most probably the best night of my life! So happy at that result! Still have to 'pinch myself'! I'm still living here, I hope we can do it again! COYG!

The parade to the town hall that year is still to this day the best party I’ve ever been to, I’m 51. Went to most games that season. Remember getting crushed at West Ham against one of those metal barriers and my mate saving my life ~ when I saw Hillsborough it sent a shiver through me, still does. I watched the Liverpool game in a Snooker hall of all places. Get goose bumps all over my body watching that goal. Best summer of my life - Acid House parties and Arsenal winning the league. Anyone not old enough to remember this or who were as yet unborn can never truly have a real sense of how absolutely impossible it was that this could happen that night...and yet happen it did!! I've watched this film so many times and it gives me the same chills every time. I still think Michael is going to get clattered at the last second before he puts that ball away...and then, to have that presence of mind and that level of coolness to execute that back pass just moments later, unbelievable!! I knew about this but never knew it was as dramatic and it's a beautiful football story and what makes football so good and never realised how many good players arsenal had as i was only 7! Wish football was a mixture of how it was then and how it is now, just look at the passion from the fans! Nothing like that now as the lower working class just cant afford it and we're the fans that create the environment, tourist's, novelty goers and people having a day out just don't create anything especially at the big clubs. Fantastic film. I am a Liverpool supporter and I was 17 that Friday night, sat down expecting the nailed on title win. Huge respect to Arsenal for pulling it off. It felt cruel at the time, coming so soon after Hillsborough. I was extremely moved by the way the Arsenal players spoke about Hillsborough in this documentary. It clearly still affects them all those years after, and was much appreciated as a lifelong red.

Watching this makes me despise what football has become. I was 11 in '89 and a huge Arsenal fan. I remember the tragedy of Hillsborough and what I felt that day. To hear how Nigel Winterburn and other players felt really shook me watching this. There are things more important than football and rivalries. How Liverpool continued after that was an amazing feat. Proper club. And to see Wrighty crying made me cry too. What a guy! This is how football should be. Passion. Tackles flying in. Games allowed to flow. Even the short celebrations after goals, as the ref wanted to start again quickly. Now, you have coordinated celebration nonsense possibly ruined by VAR. Games at all different times to maximise profits. The football that is shown here has gone. Money has corrupted it all.

Every other fan except Spurs fans wanted Arsenal to do it and the way it ended was unbelievable but part of you also wanted Liverpool to do it after Hillsborough which was the saddest memory I have about football, just horrific

My first Arsenal game was the home fixture against Liverpool that season, 4th Dec 88 and it finished 1-1, smudge and barnes....i'll never forget that date as i never had much interest in footy before but had a mate who's uncle had something to do with the Gunners. He convinced me to go and i think it cost me £3 to stand in the North Bank and 60p for a programme but the moment i went through them turnstiles, up the steps and gradually see the pitch over the crest at the top of the North Bank, i was hooked. What a season to become a Gooner.

Horrible experience for us obviously. I remember feeling so guilty that I was so upset afterwards given what had happened at Hillsborough. I was 18 and wept like a child for about an hour. It just felt so cruel. I felt so selfish at being upset over a dumb game of football when we had lost so many people. I still feel that way now watching this, so many conflicting emotions. Football can be funny that way, being the most important of the unimportant things. Arsenal were a good side though and deserved champs.

I was stuck offshore in the North Sea, listening to it on the radio. Unbelievable finish. Well deserved also. This is a brilliant video. Have to feel for the Scousers though. They aren't a bad bunch. Partied with them in Trafalgar Square after Arsenal done the double in 71. They took defeat well, and partied anyway, for getting to the final, and having a day out. Oh! Rocky.

I always had about the 89 league win at Anfield, I just watched the full documentary today. COYG ❤forever The Arsenal. David and Thomas in that midfield played a great role and also the striker Smith , one goal and assist, Mr. Arsenal and the goalkeeper from Croatia Luckic were amazing in that game .

I remember working in Tesco in Hendon, north London, filling shelves during the game. The store was closed as most shops in them days closed by 5.30 so we had the radio on and had it broadcasting over the tannoy. I don't even support Arsenal (Watford fan so was nice to see Pat Rice on the winning side) but even I got chills when I heard the goal go in. Left work at 10pm and the streets were rocking. It was an incredible game with an ending none of us ever thought would happen.

I was 9! Surrounded by London based Liverpool supporting family as a newly christened Arsenal supporter that year... This bring back such a flood of emotions!! In my opinion, still a bigger climax than the Man City winner due to the fact we played our direct title opposition.

I was at sea in the mid atlantic. No internet in those days. The radio lads got the news and passed the message to the bridge. The young arsenal fan on the bridge, told us on the main broadcast. An emotional outburst that i'll never forget. Hello chocca, hope you had a good life mate.

I remember 6 of us starting drinking in our local at 4pm, then onto our mates house to watch the match, we absolutely trashed his front room, before going back to the pub for last orders, his misses kicked him out for a couple of days after and we all chipped in to get it redecorated ! I still live a mile from the pub today, happy memories !

I still remember the unbridled joy when Micky Thomas scored, I was in bed watching the game on a tiny portable CRT screen on top of a TallBoy. I leapt up and banged my head on the ceiling jumping for joy - if you don't invest, you will never know this joy. Thank you Arsenal '89 💕

Wonderful documentary, goose-pimples. I must have seen the dying moments of the game and Micky Thomas's goal a hundred times through the years and I'm still worried the ref will blow up for full-time or that Micky will be caught on the ball as he shapes to make the decisive shot. Brings tears to my eyes. Legends all.

Top manager and like you say, never got the credit he deserved. I’m firmly of the opinion he’d have won Arsenal a European Cup if he was given more time. That team had the tools to win it,

@lancedsouza1547 yes and no. By the time he left it had become incredibly stale. 1992 was the best shot at Europe except they got outfoxed by Benfica and were never the same again. Still though, last Arsenal manager to date to win a European trophy

​@@lancedsouza1547 imo yes the reason why he didn't get far in 92 was because the team didn't have enough experience that was their first time competing in the tournament and for reference it took SAF (hailed by many as the greatest manager in football history) 13 tries before he won it 13.

@johnrockyryan It wasn't easy to qualify for it, never mind win it back then, hence why either truly exceptionally great or lucky teams won it back then. George couldn't quite cut it when the chance came and they went into a tailspin after - FA Cup V Wrexham being an example. Team under George never really hit the great heights again after that. As for experience AC Milan won it in 1989 with no experience in Europe and Nottingham Forrest 1979, Aston Villa 1982 were same.
