YES anyone of any culture or race can be inspired by ANY character or creator of another race or culture... but there really is something inspiring about seeing someone who looks and sounds like you, from a similar background, doing the thing you've dreamed about, or just seeing them live their dreams and succeed. It's nice to see your own culture and people represented positively in something that you might normally not. Considering most of these kind of movies, especially these fantastical Christmas movies, and media in general tend to push non-white characters aside, feature them as sidekicks or villains or minor characters, it's refreshing and inspiring as non-black people to see positive representation of characters who look and sound like US. It's not political, it's not meant to be negatively racial. It's just the fact that it's nice and inspiring to see characters (and their director) standing as uplifting inspiration. Imagine if you're a little black girl in a black neighborhood, who feel ashamed because you love math and science but your friends and family think it's weird and make fun of you for it all the time. Seeing Journey and Jessica proudly proclaiming their love of these things and embracing their natural genius and talents can easily be a positive source of inspiration to look to. Just the same for kids who may see the director and go through the same experience.
