Just heard her sing for the first time on the TERRELL KZbin channel and she rendered this song sitting right next to him. I'm sitting here bawling my eyes out and haven't seen the play but I've seen the movie countless times. I cannot imagine sitting that close to her while she's singing that song. I'd probably blubber and bawl my way right to the floor and faint. She is phenomenal!!!

@IChangedMyMind Agreed, but lets be honest: the book (and the story itself) is a celebration of the underdogs and a poor, black woman in the late 19th century is the portrait of how the world can be cruel to some people, not all people. Alice Walker has made a stateman on how women of color are wiped out of their self love from the very start. So, the song was made for the power of black women and there's nothing wrong with that, as there's nothing wrong for everyone feel and see themselves in this song, as you said, once its speaking of how is possible overcame the hardness of life. Black women can be a model to everyone

I can’t believe people say Fantasia’s version is better. Cynthia had the best version emotion wise, technique wise and just plain the way it sounds. I felt and actually UNDERSTOOD every word because she enunciated every letter. Her voice is crystal clear and beautiful in the way she executes this.

Char M. Well to be very honest.... everyone has their opinion and I see why people say Fantasia's is better because she connects with Celie the most throughout all the women who have played the part. She's lived Celie's life if you really think about it but I think BOTH WOMEN ARE AMAZING ! I just think comparing them... just doesn't make any sense and besides they were in different versions and if you listen closely...you can tell I'm Here was rewritten a bit.

different interpretations. from a technical standpoint, yes cynthia was better, but fantasia purposefully squalled and cried and yelled and slurred her words to portray the emotion celie was feeling. the character isn't the most educated person, so the bad diction was more of a stylistic choice based off of celie rather than fantasia just having bad enunciation. fantasia also isn't a broadway vocalist, so she doesn't exactly sing like one. both were excellent

Walking into that theatre just to see a “cheap seat” show and I walked out finding the album on iTunes because I NEEDED TO LISTEN AGAIN AND AGAIN. Cynthia BLEW US ALL AWAY. Everyone near me cried at least once and then everyone gave her a standing ovation after this performance (among others). I felt ashamed to have never heard of “The Color Purple” before then because it became in instant favorite upon first viewing. I had reservations about seeing this on Broadway because even though I loved the book and the movie, the story is heavy. I was afraid it’d be too dark and sad to sit through a live show. But, man, was I ever wrong! Yes, the story has its tragic moments, but overall the musical was incredibly uplifting. At the time I saw it, Jennifer Hudson played Shug and Danielle Brooks played Sophia. They were fantastic, but no one outshined Cynthia Erivo as Celie. I’d never heard someone sing that powerfully live nor had I ever seen anyone get a standing ovation mid-show. But, she was absolutely electrifying! You could feel it all across the theater, undeniably.
