This is an amazing machine. I had them here last week clearing land. A job that would have taken me months to do, takes them one day. Watch them take down some HUGE dead oak trees.
Here are the highlights of Phase One.

Wow, wow, oh wow! Man that thing saved so many man hours of hard labor for you. Have been waiting to see if this would do what we need. Our grown up fence row needs clearing to put a two lane path in to the back of the property. Millions of Chinaberry scrubs and larger trees as well. Kudzu everywhere in the trees and on the ground. Will do some hunting now for a place in SE GA that has this machine. Thanks so much for the education. Take care ~ Sharon

Not sure if anyone would want to tackle it if the fence line still has old fencing in it. The wire and the posts (if metal) would probably tear up the head or dull the teeth too much... but you could ask them about it.

I am 70 now, unknown to me I have been a prepper. In 1952 things were different... no machines like today. love it. a little of my history My dad told me that after seeing a documentary at the Museum. in those days this was never on TV. We only had 2 channels and not on all day. Because I loved it so much either my dad or mom would take me to any showings at the Museum. I was classified as retarded. My parents did not agree. We found out a few years ago I was typically on the Autism Spectrum. When we got home I disappeared into the woods, my dad found me. We lived on Minnehaha Parkway. I had crossed the street, and gone down the steep bank to the river. There I made a lean to. My dad side I did a great job, all considering my age and no knife. From there I never stopped my learning.

I looked up that implement and it's real pricey. Basically a root rake with thumbs to collect the logs to a burn pile would do for me. We use a cat loader to clear and we own a skidsteer just like the one in this video. We've cleared about 10 acres this year and burned last years clearings (about 15 piles the size or larger than a two car garage) all vine choked woods dead trees locust and assorted trash vegetation. Burning is fast and cheap, but messy. Still the coals and ash make great dirt for the planting that follows.
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 7 жыл бұрын
I've really enjoyed (and employed) my grapple for the front loader. It really saves a lot of work.
@Atoyota
@Atoyota 7 жыл бұрын
The mulcher is too pricey, we have a 'grappler' for the skidsteer. We call it 'the root rake' Same implement that you enjoy but on our skid steer. After a burn we sift through the ash to get the chunks piling them in the next pile, and in areas cleared we use it to grade through roots before we rake and seed. Useful also for cleaning up dry stack stone fence rows Branches limbs etc that end up there. Oh yeah and it can handle bails of fence posts, although forks can do them as well.
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 7 жыл бұрын
Yep.. root rake is another name for it. Your skid steer should pick up a LOT more weight than my tractor, though. I think my loader's capacity is 2800lbs at the pins. But, since the grapple weighs around 800lbs, and the material picked up is a couple of feet outside the "pins"... I'm limited to probably 1500 to 2000lbs. You can pick up a lot more than that I would think... but they ARE handy ! :)

Well, that was educational AND fun to watch. If you want a lot of mulch (for, say a Back to Eden Garden), do you think it more economical to have a woodlot mulched or just buy the mulch in bulk? I'm working on my new 1 acre fenced orchard and I'm going to need a lot of mulch for my little trees, grapevines and berries.
@BIGALTX

Most mulch can be had for free. Try to find a tree service place near you and offer to let them dump there. Most companies have to PAY to dump their load and would love to have a free place to dump.

@BIGALTX

He was $200 per hour with a $275 setup fee (setup fee might depend on how far he travels) How much he can clear depends on how much brush and trees there are.. so every job is different. I highly recommend a forestry mulcher. A good operator can make your property look fantastic. Here's my Forestry Mulcher Playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLutBw50GI1zzivZEXH0_pv28cCdyesjID It shows them clearing underbrush as well as huge trees. They are about $200 per hour.

May we ask how much the company charged? Roughly? I got a quote here in central Texas for around $1300 out the door (not including delivery). Per day. But then I've gotten owner operator fees of $125/hr all the way up to $2800/day. I know these machines are expensive!! I guess that's why I am clearing by hand. Haha

Also interested in what having this done would cost approximately. How many acres do you think they could clear in a workday?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 7 жыл бұрын
Depends on how thick the brush/trees are as to how much land they could cover in a day. If it's only brush he could probably do several acres in a day. If there are a lot of trees... probably only an acre or 2. This guy charges $200 hr. It was worth it to me to have someone that knew what they were doing to do this. I've been pushing some of the green down with my grapple and loader, but couldn't get the larger saplings and trees with it. My main reason for using him was that he can grind the stump. If I do it... I'll leave something of a stump there because I can't cut it below ground level. If there's a stump there, I still have to mow around it...

As Forestry Mulchers go, this was a small sized one.He chewed down a dead elm that was about 4 to 5 feet in diameter. As I stated in the video, I didn't have him mulch the entire trees because I was trying to save money... I put them in a pile and burned them. But yes... It should take mature pines down and chew them up into mulch.

I would think it could do 3 acres easily in a day... unless you have HUGE trees you want taken down and mulched up. Grinding big trees takes some time. If there are just cedars, they could probably be 'pulled up' by an excavator (or a small trackhoe). I have even pulled some up with my Kubota, and a grapple on the front. That would probably work near a septic line.

Charlie . Not sure what the problem is, here. He got rid of dead trees, thinned the saplings and smaller trees and left the nutrients in the ground at the site for the remaining larger trees to use. Seems like an excellent way to maximize the benefits of the ecosystem he's working with. The remaining trees will be healthier, provide great shade for the land/animals, and produce more oxygen when their canopies can get healthier. Seems like a pretty responsible practice.
