Irish landowners explain why they will Transform their spruce plantation into a permanent mixed forest, that produces High-quality timber & more.., instead of going with conventional clear-felling management. Today we are visiting a landowner collaboration forestry in county Offaly, who recently decided to change their management to Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF). With this forest management approach, the aim is to develop and maintain forest stands into permanently irregular structures, that provide high-quality timber, enhance biodiversity, and deliver other ecosystem services. Great to see, around where I live in New Zealand some people are finishing with pine trees and moving back to Natives and Riparian planting around waterways.

🎩Hi we were doing that here in good old Blighty 20 years ago. We had loads of single crop conifer stands that we just carefully thinned to let the broadleaves to come through. Though sometimes the bosses said no clear fell them because they wanted the money. Even though the trees were about 23 years old. Mixed woodland is great. But here we weren’t even allowed to thin the conifers, don’t know why. That’s bosses for you. Though we did spend years planting about 800 mixed species a day for 6 months of the year. Hence a really bad back. Keep up the good work.

🎩Hi my first day in the woods was with on old forester. The first thing he did was light a small fire so we could toast our sandwiches for breakfast. He lived his whole life in the village next to the wood and as a 15 year old had to go to the local stream to collect water to make tea. Another story he told me was of a chainsaw guy who felled a tree but it got hung up. So this chap then cut the other tree, but the one he got hung up fell on him. Aargh. He lived because the ground was so soft he just got squished into the mud.
