Watch the complete series on Continous Cover Forestry, and learn all about this management: • The Future of Forestry...
Today I’m visiting three forestry landowners in County Offaly, Ireland with Forester Manus Crowley. Their forests were originally planted as conventional spruce plantations, but the choice is now made to transform them into mixed permanent forests that produce high-quality sustainable timber & more.. with the management approaches of CCF (Continuous COver Forestry) instead of going with the conventional clear-felling management. Let’s learn all about this transformation process and why this choice has been made!?

It's nice to see some people in Ireland and other parts of the British Isles following this plan and system of ideas. I hope this idea spreads. I live in Australia and I know that a lot of foresters DO care and many of the same principals are the same, but spreading awareness and demonstrating the benefits is important going forward.

You can use permaculture principle of giving deer what they need in order to protect young shoots. For example - you could plant bunch of jerusalim artichoke around the young shoots and hopefully deer will eat artichoke. Damage to artichoke will produce hormones to stimulate growth. By the time seedling outgrows artichokes deep pressure won't bother it that much This works on small scale not sure if it's doable in example.

Permaculture has all the answers and its really the end goal even though many can't see it yet, theyre still too caught up trying to to squeeze short term profit out of the land rather than lay the framework for exponential growth for generations to come

they problem is a little bit more complex i think. starting with the climate, soil type and therefore a specific flora, intra and interspecific competion and relation, the amout of deer etc. imo

It may be the case in the future you’ll have to protect those seedlings another way other than culling. It’ll be a lot of work, but may be your only option. Deer are Insatiable.

What were the original natural predators on deer in ireland.... I'm assuming wolves.... maybe wildcats.... is the country looking at bringing them back, or are you going to rely only on hunting and culling? Seems a lot easier in the long run to rely on the natural apex predators.

I agree, but it will be hard to convice the public for reintroducing atm. First need to create more habitat and see an attitude change, esspecially among the farmers. In mainland europe it is working out, with the compensation being payed for lost livestock.
