Dude your math is dialed in. I was backtesting a decent confirmation indicator I found today. I was using the ATR to find stop loss levels. There were about three times in the year of data where the stop loss was just barely above or below a small retracement before a huge profitable run. The SL was right there at the perfect spot to keep the position open but not way too far off. I was like damn VP knows his shit. Thanks man!

Felt the same way. Finally after 10 months of Forward Testing I Might Have Something. Now I'm Wondering about VP mentioning he only takes 20% a year in other vids and podcasts. Wondering how he manages taking that 20%. Thought 1: Trailing Stop in a sense on the entire account. Thought 2: Tracks his drawdown and decreases his own drawdown and cuts him self off at certain point??? Thought 3: Hits 20% on his account and shuts it all down until next year. Hope this is valid question that he didn't already discuss in another video podcast but don't think its in his library of info.

Had to watch this twice to really understand how to use the stop loss how you did and yeah it makes a difference. The biggest difference maker is when your exit indicator gets you out a bad trade before your SL ever gets triggered. Of course we rather erase a loss all together, but if your algo can turn a $1500(2%) loss into a $170 loss, that’s the second best scenario. Thanks VP!

I've placed a marker @ 1.5x the ATR like you've explained (I don't use stop losses when trade is negative because I wait for the bank's response then I'll manually close positions if the banks settle beyond my marker. It works great when your risk is >1.5% of your account) I've halved trades at points that my system indicates to scale out!! The net result over 3 days and 4 pairs is 255pips. Thank you so much mate from Sydney Australia.

VP this almost contradicts your Ratios post/video. You still setup a TP target, but now the purpose/context behind it is different... You split the risk to two trades. I am still trying to get use to the daily timeframe and learning to hold trades longer. From my testing I've seen that daily trades can take at 5-30 days to make a decent trend run/move. My exit "indicator" is not an indicator it's a potential wall/price area although you've proven price levels don't wont. I still find it beneficial to use them as zones. A fan of your channel after absorbing all of the podcasts and catching up to all the videos on the channel. If everyone uses this trade, along with the other 3 open trades, as a sample, you can get a very good idea of the (trailing) stop loss method used. We already know the initial stop loss point, the move to break even point, and the initial take profit. It is very easy to see in looking at these examples that the entry points are pretty early in a trend. I would say on a scale of early to mid to late, it leans early-mid. Also, the (trailing) stop loss is very tight. For example, if I had to guess, I would say the open GBPAUD trade exited at a profit in early December at around 1.7655 (give or take 10 pips probably) Thanks for the educational channel

Mr VP im currently going through every single video from oldest first (currently at episode 28 of the podcast) and I will say that this and the ATR video are hands down the most important. I've backtested 2018 data for AUDJPY, GBPUSD, EURUSD, NZDCAD, GBPCHF & GBPJPY. Now initially when you said T/P 1 is at 1 x ATR and of course S/L @ 1.5 x ATR myself & perhaps others' initial reaction would be that this wouldn't prove to be a good result over the year as you're gunning for around a 0.67-0.7 RR - and as you know retail loves that 3:1 RR. However the opposite is true. There are many many winning trades which hit 1 x ATR and then the other half hits B/E 90% of the time, so I charted up all the trades I took and worked out the yearly % gain across all of those pairs with the first being your suggestion of 1/2 the position off at 1 x ATR and going to B/E - this resulted in a 16.25% gain. The next was just closing the entire position at 1 x ATR - this gave a 9.2% gain. And finally was leaving the position and S/L targeting lows or highs with most trades having a RR of 1.5:1-3:1, this proved to be the worst with only a 8.2% gain. One thing i noticed was that it didn't always provide the best result for each individual currency pair, this doesn't matter because the key thing is that across the board it easily outperformed the other ways of approaching the trades. In summary this money management system is legit, look forward to testing all the other pairs over the past 3 years :D thanks man

Okay, so you recommend scaling out and i see the logic in doing so. Taking some of that profit off the table does make sense. With that said, Why scale out? If you go into the trade properly with an appropriate stop loss set, then instead of scaling out switch that stop loss to a trailing stop loss at the same pip amount you set your stop loss at, would this not lock in your profit anyway. Why only increase your profit by half?

Great video mate, i have been testing out the ATR on my chart after seeing your videos and currently planning to add it to my Algorithm EA to set stop loss and my coder said he do that for is client. After backtesting I love the numbers I get if I were to set SL based off ATR, so what I take from this video is that before you enter the trade the ATR was 60 pips and you say you know your stop loss is going to be 90 pips so I assume you use 1 1/2 the ATR as your risk before you enter the trade or you can even use 2 x the ATR which would be 120 pips. Wow 😲

He uses 1.5 ATR as the stop loss. Watch the risk video.

Hey VP, Something that does not make sense to me. You state not to use ratios. However if we follow the methodology proposed here we not only are using a ratio, But a losing one. We set our Stop Loss at 1.5 times our ATR. Then we set our TP on a half trade at our ATR. This is a 1.5 : 1. One of our trades is still running but it still has a ways to go before we are even break even with our stop loss. For example: Our ATR is 50. We set our Stop loss at 75 pips. We set up 2 trades. One with a take profit at 50. The other trade that we are letting run still has to go another 25 pips before we are breakeven with our SL. In an earlier vid you said we let the small wins cover the small losses so we are break even and the long runs are the gravy. But with this 1.5 : 1 ratio that will not be the case? Hope you can explain.

you have to factor in the actual win/loss ratio and the quality of your algorithm. VP said he very rarely hits his stop loss due to the quality of the system. factor that in and the math must work in your favor. you can set your TP higher and see how that math works out for you in real case studies. but the math will always seem to work out better the closer you stick to the ATR

@@mercamg1 if you have 2 trades with 60 TP and 90 SL and it hits the TP , you have won 120 pips, take one trade out, adjust the SL to the current value for the other with still 90 pips and leave the place with 120 minus a possible loss of 90, equaling 30 profit at this point

could this be correct?
@Ricardo-ep4mr5 жыл бұрын
@@edgarkretschmann4753 you don't move your second trade to the first trades TP you move it to break even. Meaning if it got stoped out you'd only get the 60pips from the first trades TP. Not 120. But if it does run you use your exit indicator to get out. Hopefully it tells you to get out before your break even point. If you're lucky it runs way more than 120 pips and eventually tells you to get out with a good couple of pips. Sorry this is not advice, this is just my understanding. Anyone is allowed to correct me if I'm wrong.

VP, I appreciate your videos, good sir. You are very generous with the wisdom you've acquired via hard work and extensive experience. Thank you for your content. Question: Why not just put in a buy/sell stop, half size on my first target price?

You can, and that's how you would do it on MT4.
