About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

ha i recently made a gas forge out of an old BBQ gas tank. works very well but i cleaned the old paint off before lining it. they work very well these forges, plus theres the satisfaction of making it yourself VS buying a pre made one. those spikes are great practice.

When you beat on the steel , when it darkens stop hitting and heat again or your end up with stress cracks but still great little forge

You can see it pretty easily even in daylight. You don't get the subtle colors, but you can definitely see when you're not in forging heat.

Great job on the forge build. You mentioned that you'd like to try forge welding so here's a tip from experience......make sure you have a piece of sacrificial refractory on the floor of the forge to protect your poured refractory from the Borax flux you'll need to use for welding. Once the Borax liquefies and runs it will eat the refractory almost instantly. It's easier to replace a loose piece of refractory than to re-pour the base in the forge.

I have an insulated door on mine. You can make one that either hinges or slides so you can cover a lot of that opening. You are losing a lot of heat from that big opening. You don't want to completely cover the door but you want to find a nice balance.

RR spikes are great fun to forge out. My first forging project was a spike blade as well. Just remember that they are way too low in carbon to make really good blades (generally under 1%), so they're pretty much just a KLO unless you forge-weld in a piece of high carbon steel for the edge. They do make one heckuva cool letter opener, though!

Railroad spikes are a great way to learn to forge. You can definitely forge a few fun ye olde knives but unfortunately they typically wont yield hardness much over the very low 40s so keep that in mind! Great fun but there are other fun recycled steels to work with that will become much harder, leaf spring for example 👌

Great looking forge. Some ideas for bells and whistles: 1. Instead of that work rest in the front, make an adjustable tool rest that is narrow and slides in and out. It will let you accommodate curved pieces and long bars more easily. Look at the the Atlas Froge and the Ellis forge to get an idea. 2. Weld a piece of angle iron to the top and bottom of the forge opening such that you can slide two halves of a firebrick in there. That way you can adjust the opening size.

Congratulations. Great build. Looking forward to seeing your "anvil elevation" solution. I wonder if old anvils any cheaper in Canucksville then they are in the States. Also, thanks for the scenes of "real work" starting at 8:30. Interesting in seeing how/what the planting goes.

I built nearly the same forge a 2 and and a half years ago. It's more than capable of forge welding temps. You've got a bit to learn before welding comes up in your journey but once you get there borax flux is what will do the real damage to a forge lining more than the heat itself. I noticed very little degradation in my lining for the first year, until my first Damascus billet. My only complaint about that forge is that it can be difficult to get a long blade got from tip to riccaso. You've got a HT kiln so that's no problem for you. #1 tip for a new bladesmith is don't make blades, learn basic blacksmithing. you will never regret knowing the fundamentals. Good luck!

base for anvil=big log,stump,bunch of 2x4 or 4x4 bolted together.. height= stand straight but natural arms at sides make fist where knuckles are us the height you want the top or striking surface if anvil put big chain or speaker magnets or both on the anvil reduces ringing noise

if you put a hinged upper lip on the front opening, you can trap a bit more of the heat from immediately escaping the front of the forge. But it won't inhibit the size of objects placed in or removed. have fun

Cut the fire brick in 2; close it around whatever you have in the forge. That'll give you better heat efficiency and quicker heat soak. Awesome though! I want to see some SLL Forged Knives!

Looks good man. I've been meaning to upgrade mine for a while. Have most of the parts, just so many other projects that keep distracting me! However, my current forge is pretty much done, the lining is more than half gone right under the burner and it's where I do my heat treating as well so I need to get on the new build.

For the base of your anvil I would suggest that you DON'T USE A TREE TRUNK. Use 2x4's or something and glue them together, I would also suggest to weld a few brackets around them. This provides a much more precise stand that a tree trunk can and is as (if not more) sturdy.

Just FYI in the future on welding projects don't ground through screws or bolts and especially don't let the ground travel through a bearing. If you move or wiggle your work current will arc across threads and bearing surfaces and burn them, causing failure. Just a thought.

Looks great! Fired my first propane forge up last weekend, from some research we did around burner efficiency you may get more heat from less gas if you can increase the amount of air being fed into the burners? Just a thought but cool project and keep on forging

I would put a brick in the bottom to have a flatter surface to put the knives on when your heating them up and the fire from the torch will damage the break instead of the actual Forge which will make it last longer.

Hey Jeremy... English is not my first language so I don't know If I'm gonna be able to explain it correctly :). When you're drawing out a bevel (on chisel knife.. etc.) you wanna do it on the edge of the anvil.. If you think about it If you wanna make nice square hit (square to the bevel) you gonna hit the anvil with edge of the hammer first. I mean .. it's not impossible but it takes longer the way you did it here. Thanks for your videos, Tomas

There is a proper height for your anvil, please check out some of the other videos and you can find out how high it should be. Can't remember exactly where I saw it, but I am sure you can find it by doing a search for anvil height. Your forge is looking great and yes, you will be able to get it to forge welding temperature. Have a great day.

From what I understand cementing the brick into the bottom wasn't a great idea. When forging people use Borax for flux (not sure if you will need to or not), Borax is acid that eats away at your fire brick. Replacing it in the forge you have built will be difficult if you need to do it.

You didn't have to cover the ceramicwool, it is heat resistant enough for blacksmithing
@josephrector8735
@josephrector8735 7 жыл бұрын
Little blade Maker its because the ceramic fibers are horrible to breathe in and because the ceramic will absorb heat whereas the refractory cement will refract aka reflect the heat back onto the metal and also slows down breakdown if insawool especially if using flux which eats insawool for breakfast

It has just started to break down over this past summer. That might just be because it was 2020 too..😆. I think I had about 50 burns in it and then it started to fail. I’ll probably re-line it in the spring when it warms back up and I can get back to some forging. 👍
