I love that a lot of these guys seem like they're just hobbyists. They step up to the plate to compete at an elite level, some of whom have never made swords, minimal time to build, and even when they break (which happens, it's art afterall) they've still all made gorgeous pieces. Taking shop class out of high-school is the biggest wound American education ever suffered. It shouldn't even be an elective. Every sophomore or junior should spend a whole year making things. The competitors are gracious with each other, you can tell Doug is having a blast cutting pigs in half. 10/10 this show is underrated.

I gotta point this out as a HEMA nerd, sorry. Shields were (almost) never made of metal. heater shields, the style we see in the video, and shields as a whole were usually made of wood, rawhide or some combination of the two (unless they were small like the buckler, or used for a specific purpose like the rotella). this was a) to keep weight and cost down and b) to ensure an enemy's blade would get stuck and give you control over the weapon. the idea of a metal heater shield likely stems from the fact that *sometimes,* very rarely, they would have a thin sheet of steel on the back in order to fortify them for cavalry use and such. however, again, this was very uncommon, and you certainly never saw shields that are all metal like the one in the video. I say these things because a wood shield would have not only been more accurate, it would have been a more interesting test. you could test the durability of the edge against the steel helm, then test the durability of the blade's body against the shield. this is because when a sword enters wood (or any material), and the edge alignment isn't robotically precise and perfect, it twists and flexes with the force of the strike. a good blade will spring back to shape, while a bad one will suffer warps. otherwise good episode tho

Do you mean you have learnt how to pronouce "Joyeuse" well by watching this video ? If the answer is "yes", I'm sorry to tell you that the name of this sword is very badly pronouced here. In modern French, far closer to the authentic pronounciation than the Anglo-saxon way, it souds like 'Joaieuz' ( with the j pronouced like in "juice" for example, but without the little "d sound" ; the o like in "core", the a like the 'ea' in "heart", the i like the y in "carpentry", the eu like the 'u' in "hurt", and finally the z like in "zombie" ).

You can see Joyeuse at the Louvres museum in Paris. But in fact, it is a kind of replica of Charlemagne's sword created with different parts and later adjustments which dated from the Xth to the XIIIth century (Charlemagne died in 814). This sword was used during the coronation of the king of France from probably Philippe Auguste (1179) to Charles X (1825), including Napoléon's coronation. Calling it Joyeuse, as Charlemagne's sword, was a way to show the continuity between the Carolingian dynasty and the Capetian dynasty...

Carcass cut is interesting, just like in every episode. Armoured segment is also looking good, as that is relevant to the swords and worth repeat in every coming competition.

Just give it a longer handle and it will be a beastly long sword. The dents it left in that armor just imagine using two hands. And yes I know it was most likely cheap armor that they used.

Here is a good one for the forged in fire guys.... I noticed that Charlemagne named his sword .... "Joyeuse". So I googled Charlemagne, and its was true, he did name his sword "Joyeuse". I'm not doubting your knowledge!! You see, Charlemagne is my Dads direct ancestor. Our daughters middle name is Joy.... what Joyeuse translates to in English. I thought this was really neat😀 . We have a most unusual ancestory, it starts with a direct line to the Royals of Scotland, then straight to Charlemagne, then straight to King Tuts 1/2 sister, then to King David of the old testament. (I'm the original Heinz 57 !) 😛

@@Impl0ze93 I still find it hard to believe, But I do have 35 pages of genealogy to prove it is real. And from a guy that has been doing the genealogy for over 40 years at the very least.I have no reason to make this up, for what the people on the internet that I don't know? I have better things to do. Here is some interesting facts for a trivia game, the Egyptians actually vacationed in Scotland,( I guess they got tired of the dessert). Scota, who was from Egypt, went to Scotland and the land was named after her. My daughter researched this 3 years ago.

@@JA-gf6zl , who knows your ancestory could hold some nice secrets. I had no idea that I was cousin to James VI/I of Scotland through the Clan MacDonald. And I have at least 3 other connections. So you might find some interesting secrets hidden in your past. Here's something to go " Hmmmmmm ? " about, In Europe alone, it is not uncommon to be related somehow to Royality. Think of it, they have children and so on throughout the century's...their family spread out over the world. So you could be Royality and not know it. ( I didn't even get a hint of it until 41 years ago.) Some could have changed their names and dropped titles, so they could live. My family were constantly trying to murder each other to gain power.

@@JA-gf6zl one thing I forgot to mention. I have studyed it for years, if you see some one in history that you look like, you most likely ARE related. I use to think that God liked the face, so he made more of it. But that was before I found pictures of my daughter in a book. She looks just like several of the Queens of England and Scotland.
