On the twenty-sixth day of Christmas the black bear made for me, a troll cross, a forge welded belt buckle, a basket twist Christmas ornament, a corkscrew, a blanket pin, a squirrel cooker, a key fob, a ball and cup toy, a decorative punch, meat scewers, a hot dog fork, jingle bels, a candy dish, a paper towel holder, a menorah, BBQ tongs, a stocking hanger, a Christmas tree ornament, a cabinet pull, a dinner bell, a steak flipper, a hose hanger, a bottle opener, a candle snuffer, a nice wreath hook and a beaitifull coat hook. Almost there, keep it up John! Good thing the troll cross doesn't work on gargoyles, gargoyle spotted 😀!

I love making these! I've sold several and have one I wear daily and you know what... I've never seen a troll! Actually I did see one once but when it saw the trolls crosses it went the other direction. True story.

Very, very nice, and simple project. I wear mine daily as a pendant. Same bacic deal other then mine is twisted. They do work well, as I have seen no trolls. I'm sure size historically is gust what scrap the blacksmith had on hand, and depends on the amount of weight a person could bare for a pendant, or Keychain adornment. They are exceptionally fast to forge as you demonstrated. One bar, and three bends. Doesn't really even require the tapers of someone's skills are lacking there. As always goot forging, and a nice product. I, like most will be very sad once this series is done. So many of us I'm sure are basically binge watching these videos, and do always want to see them come out as frequently as they are. Thank you for the absolutely amazing, and educational content.

If nothing else it's a good bending practice project that you can make out of any small scraps you have laying around. And if you use say 1/4 square bar it could also be good rounding practice. Unless left square and twisted for extra decoration. I saw some like that online. So over all it can be used as a small project to practice several different skills. Nice work and I hope to see you tomorrow for another great project. In case I don't Merry Christmas to you and your family and thank them for the time they sacrifice for you to entertain and educate.

Troll crosses could be big business, as the web is full of trolls, and you need something to ward them off. Have you now gone fully metric as you gave the measurements only in metric?
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 5 жыл бұрын
I think I will put this one on my computer for the internet trolls. I just used only metric because of the people saying its so easy to convert that I should just stick to one measurement. Of course they meant to skip the metric 😜

Someone else mentioned that they look like tong clips. I suppose with a fishtail on the ends they could be used that way. Or maybe like two cobras facing off each other. Not sure if you would need spring steel or if mild steel would be good enough.

The Troll Cross isn't an ancient talisman, as most think. While it's true that in Scandinavia there has always been a belief that trolls fear iron and that hanging bits of scrap iron over a child's bed would stop trolls from kidnapping them, the popular view of the troll cross is only partially true. In the 1970s, an artisan blacksmith remembered a piece of iron that hung over his bed to ward off trolls. Later in years, he started reproducing the shape and marketing it as a Troll Cross. The original piece was actually a rope grommet that would be sewn into the corner of a sail. All of this notwithstanding, it's a popular item nowadays, and the best seller in my shop. Here's a little film I made in which I show my method for making it. Since I make so many, I had to come up with a way to speed the process. Hope you enjoy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpnEmZ-hgL-CaZY

When ever you use flat round or square stock, is it always mild steel
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 5 жыл бұрын
No, the type of steel used is based on what is being made. In general if it isn't a tool that needs to be hardened, I just use mild steel.

@@BlackBearForge Thanks John. I went back through your videos and found your video reviewing the different type of Tongs. You stated that the Tongs that I'm looking for are "Paws or Pauls" tongs named after the Smith that reproduced them, however; I cannot locate a pair as I don't know the correct spelling. I appreciate your response. If you know the correct spelling, would you please furnish it for me to continue my search. Thanks again for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer my request. Merry Christmas to you and your family. I watch your channel daily, the I go out to my shop and forge. God Bless. Charlie
