Bear with Bear Independent discusses the reality of hunting and fishing when SHTF. In this video, he explains why he believes that hunting and fishing is not a viable option in today's world for the long term. Bear recommends stocking up on dry food like corn, rice, wheat, and beans (750lbs per person/year = 3,277 calories/day), planting a small garden, and raising small livestock. In addition, he provides many other useful tips you'll want to know.

You are so right. Livestock farming is far better for 6 reasons. 1. Realibility: You can control what and when you breed rear and fatten. 2. Wealth: money is going to be worthless in SHTF. But a cow that can give you meat milk leather and draught. That is a value asset 3.

I see it all the time: "I can hunt, my family will be OK". Baloney. Last Depression, the white tail deer was nearly extinct east of the Mississippi....it took until the mid-late 50's for most States to come up with enough population to have a hunting season. The simple fact is while it appears there is a lot of game out in the woods, when you divide it up between the hungry humans, it ain't gonna last that long.

My dad, a Mormon, owned and operated a food storage business when I was a kid growing up in Pennsylvania. Our basement, garage and storage sheds were “stacked to the rafters” with buckets and bags of various grains creating a large labyrinth of dried goods. He wasn’t big into hunting at all and was all into the math of what grains each person/family needed per year and I, in my foolish youth, always considered him to be a big food storage nerd. As an adult I now understand the level of planning,, research and dedication that took and I have come to the realization he was a f’ing genius.

My dad lives here in the US. His mom back in Mexico. Way back when the pandemic was being ignored by the Chinese government, I warned my dad about the inevitable food shortage we were going to witness as soon as lockdowns even became an idea, and he believed me. He left for Mexico in January for some business-related travel, and while he was there, he bought a year's worth of beans for his mom in one go. And while my uncles said he was just being a showoff, within two months the same uncles were at my grandma's house asking for a kilo of beans so that they could have something to feed their kids, since they were unemployed by their own lockdowns and the price of beans going from 17 MXN to 25 MXN a kilogram. I can relate to that. I used to live near a poultry farm and ( most people don't know this ) once the laying hens reach their first moult, they stop laying for about 3 months, so it's off to the chicken processing factory with them! I used to go down to the farm and buy these live chickens for 50c each. I'd take them home, kill and dress them and put them in the freezer. One day, I killed about 10 chickens and, feeling rather generous, rang my mother-in-law to see if she wanted a couple. She replied that she couldn't possibly eat them, knowing that I had killed them. To which I said, "You know the chickens that you buy in the grocery shop? Well, none of them die of old age!" Things were a little frosty between us for a while! lol

Agreed. People have the fantasy that in a SHTF grid-down crisis they will take to the woods and hunt and fish to survive. The problem with that plan is that millions of people have the same idea and there aren't nearly enough deer, wild game and fish to feed everyone. Those resources would quickly be depleted and disappear. Hunters wouldn't be taking one or two deer a year to meet their needs. They would be shooting everything in sight so they could get it before somebody else does. Only those in extremely remote areas would survive.

they may not make it off our property, depending. we have more than enough bodies of water for fishing and as long as people die of and water isn't poisoned there are very large bodies of water with family living on them. the advice here is very sound and consistent with others with some others say. We don't have as many family members with full farms or even specialized anymore but most are not all that far away. lately I focus on different beans, not green or wax types, and some have cross bred but several other things need to be started indoors up here or probably won't get a finished crop each year so variety is huge. Raspberry and blueberry and some little sought after are plentiful unless we get a dry summer. wild strawberries are a treat but the berries do attract other animals but mostly bear and rabbit population is in cycles. if we had to retreat to the hunting property raising different types of birds would be possible and we could let the beavers dam up the creek or stream and part of the land returns to wetlands and we then get ducks and geese and more critters attracted to the area. most nearby property is much larger and part forest and part farm. The majority of those neighbors are friendly though the pricks have mellowed some and the guy who was a possible serial killer is no longer free but a SHTF scenario if either group were to be a problem there are enough good folks to settle the issue so that is one angle without taking into account those fleeing cities. I'd hate to "abandon" the property but in an emergency there are other places we could potentially head to but in the case of an EMP/Nuclear issue or total electric grid collapse modern cars are a problem in the first and gas in either way as that gas needs electricity to get pumped but in my situation that is potentially the scariest part as I no longer own any pre-computer chipped vehicles and to go from one area of family to other is maybe a 100-150 mile radius from where I live and an easy 250 miles from one family member in a city to the opposite direction to the in-laws and other family or good friends. Make sure to store seeds well and even bulk seeds need replacement every so often and even more if buying the corporate GMO stuff from certain companies.

@@MrProfchaos71 Hey, I don't disagree. However, 330 million is a LOT of people. Even if 3/4 of the people die in six months, all the game out there is toast. 82.5 million hungry people will ravage the countryside, killing every animal in sight. They'll figure it out. Nets, chasing them toward pits, whatever. There's about 30 million deer in the US. How long will they last? A lot will be wasted due to inept processing and lack of refrigeration. If you're right, even those who are knowledgeable survivors may have to travel extremely long distance into areas where the remaining game have migrated. Hunting is difficult enough. Competing with 82 million others, who are desperate, isn't going to make it any easier. But, anyway, I don't know any more than you. You may be right. I don't wanna find out! LOL : )

I enjoyed your presentation. I've given this a lot of thought over the years, and used to keep hundreds of pounds of wheat stored in the LDS fashion -mylar bags lining air-tight buckets, purged by dry ice to remove oxygen and kill creepy-crawleys. Thinking about the 3 macro nutrients -proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, the most important are fats and proteins -contrary to popular belief. While carbs provide calories, you can actually survive your entire life without carbs -such as the Inuit and Masai have done. Your body can, and does, make any of the glucose that your body needs for red blood cells through the process of de novo gluco-neogenesis (say that fast 3 times). To my way of thinking, having a very good store of protein and good fats (especially containing essential omega 3 and 6 fatty acids) is essential. To that end, you can get a lot of protein from stored/canned fish (salmon, and sardines -sardines are almost a perfect food, containing protein, essential fats, calcium, iodine, and many other minerals). These will last for years. While certainly not everyone's favorite food, these are a tremendous addition to food stores. You can also buy olive oil and fats powder -usually comprised of dehydrated MCT oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, and cream -not cheap but lots of calories and essential oils. Also, natural peanut butter and almond butter lasts for several years and provides a huge amount of good oils. For a deeper understanding of how the body actually prefers to burn ketones (made from your body's fat stores by your liver) in preference to glucose, plus many of the downsides of a heavily carbohydrate-based diet (which, granted, might be very useful during a crisis), check out Ben Bikman's book Why We Get Sick. He's a professor of bioenergetics at BYU. Once adapted to being primarily a fat burner instead of a sugar (carbohydrate) burner, you get hungry much less often and use food metabolically much more efficiently. Just my 2 cents.

@@xPRODIGYxGAMER - I suppose it depends on how chaotic and desperate you expect the situation to become. If we subscribe to the doomsday scenario of TEOTWAWKI then the reason for the deer population reduction prior to the Great Depression is meaningless. There are 330 million people in the US now 3X more than 1920 and an equal amount of guns. Everyone that gets hungry will think they can hunt. I suspect more people will be shot than deer initially. And those that can hunt will have a lucrative skill for a time. The US consumes 274 pounds of meat each year per person. if you get 100 pounds of meat per deer that means the 45 million deer would be wiped out in less than a year. Of course people will cut down on meat consumption and eat other animals also but clearly if there is a prolonged crisis deer wouldn't last long. There is anecdotal evidence that is the case since other wild game and fish were greatly reduced in number. Now if it is just a controlled depression and industry is still available and the govt takes care of the really poor while regulating hunting, then sure, deer could simply supplement the diet of a portion of the population.

It isnt covert and any area will be tapped out quickly. Correct...start with your preps while you build up the ability to farm or husband animals. Put aside seeds of hi protein value. Oats, wheat and corn are things you can get at the feed store in 25 or 50 lb bags. Something that I have discovered is wild sunflowers the ones you see all over the roads. They make a lot of small flowers and seeds but the amount produced is worth it. Stalks can be chipped for compost. Seeds and leaves feed chickens and they can be pressed for oil. Just a share of a free resource one may not think about but pass by everyday.

"LIVESTOCK" are presented as "free" food - x pounds of chicken, x pounds of meat rabbits. "cutting your food bill by 1/3". NOT. Add in the COST of all the rabbit pellets and chicken feed (exclude all the pens, waterers, bedding, labor, JUST ADD the cost of feed). DO THE MATH PEOPLE !!! I am here to tell you that without alfalfa / rabbit pellets, those rabbits will yield SQUAT. They will NOT yield food on hay (even if you had the tractor, fuel, mower, rake and baler to make it) I know - we tried. Even on the BEST second and third cutting hay, they could not compete with the output of a backyard jersey cow for DAILY FOOD PRODUCTION on an equal amount of food per body weight in pounds. As for POULTRY: "meat chickens" need HIGH PROTEIN (soybean meal based) chicken FEED - aka Tractor Supply or a FEED STORE. They do NOT eat "for free" they are not "survival animals". And "heritage chickens" kept for layers need at least 16% protein laying mash to lay an egg when conditions are almost perfect - ie - not in the winter, low light, too cold, frozen water, etc. Those sheep - yeah - watch videos where he does "chores" and NOTE WHAT HE FEEDS THEM. FEED! As soon as his "feed stores" are gone, what happens to his sheep that need FEED (grains) and HAY? What happens when winter comes? When selecting livestock, select animals that give you food EVERY DAY, NOT meat animals. IE - a small dairy animal (jersey cow, nigerian dwarf or other goat) or EGG laying heritage chickens that are GOURMET MEAT and will SET (hatch their own eggs) - NOT leghorns, rhode island reds or any yellow legged chickens (rubber meat). Choose Cubalaya, Speckled Sussex or Marans - exquisite meat, medium to large eggs, small, med and large meat size respectively. Your "meat" will be occassional - from your "spent" hens, extra hatched cockerels, male dairy offspring. DO NOT RAISE MEAT ANIMALS unless you have year around pasture for sheep (such as Icelandic or Scotch Highland Sheep -the latter defend themselves against coyotes and dogs) or cattle that can survive ANYTHING - such as Scotch Highland Beef Cattle (multi purpose meat, milk and draft) that can defend themselves against coyotes and bears. A small jersey cow is great - but Jersey bulls will KILL YOU and you HAVE to keep a bull. Do you KNOW these things? Coturnix Quail are a possibility - IF you can plan to have a means to incubate (solar) their eggs - 6 weeks vs 6 months to maturity in chickens. Check YT videos. These would give daily meat and daily eggs for you or your cats, dogs, baby chicks - integrated - cracked into a strainer .... tips on YT. As for gardening - if you think you are going to raise beans and not be inviting EVERY groundhog / woodchuck, deer and rabbit to free dinner - you are mistaken. IF you think you are going to raise potatoes and not have mice tunnel and eat into them - you are mistaken. IF you think you are going to raise corn and not have the same animals eat the green plants if the crows don't come and pluck up every kernel and then the raccoons don't eat the ears JUST WHEN they are PERFECTLY RIPE - you are sadly mistaken. OH YES - get a livestock guardian dog. That eats HOW MUCH MEAT A DAY? WHERE is that "dog chow" coming from EVERY DAY? And where is the breeding stock to keep them going? And HOW are you going to raise 6-10 puppies - ON WHAT TRUCK LOAD OF MEAT? WHERE is the "fencing for the garden" coming from? THESE are the real questions. Hunter gatherers survive(d) because they are / were NOMADS. Traveling with their herds and flocks and dogs and people to "greener pastures" OR following the game in seasons or as they roamed. I am not saying the Nomad life is possible. But sitting on a piece of land and thinking you will just "grow your own food" by having chickens, rabbits, sheep, cattle, a livestock guardian dog and grow some taters, beans and corn - is NOT realistic - even for those who have done it for 20 years. IF you think it is - STOP GOING TO THE FEED STORE and then figure out HOW you are going to feed all those animals - "for free" - and IN WINTER ? Can you grow the grains (grass such as oats) that a breed of livestock can live on - such as icelandic or scoth highland sheep or nigerian dwarf goats? Can you grow the grains (grass such as wheat or sorghum grain) that chickens can live on - such as cubalaya or gourmet meat birds that are layers and setters? HAVE YOU TRIED? HOW will you HARVEST that grain? HOW will you PLANT that grain (plow, disc, "rake", plant, weed / cultivate - ACRES ! ) HOW will you DRY and STORE that grain for ONE YEAR - safe from vermin, the weather, insects and raiding birds? Because it will MOLD, HEAT and possibly catch fire if not dried properly - fans are usually used for this. DO YOU HAVE A PLAN LIKE THIS? If not, you don't have a plan to survive with livestock and a garden. And you better plan to be a nomad hunter gatherer and learn trapping, snaring, shooting, fishing, tracking and WALKING and WALKING and WALKING and living "nowhere". And have a "nomad" shelter. These are the HARD FACTS. Telling people to put up beans and rice is "cool". Telling people to "get livestock" is "cool". But let's get REAL if we want to PREPARE TO SURVIVE SHTF. Best wishes to you all who are trying to work out your survival. FOOD IS CHEAP, buying AS MUCH AS YOU CAN NOW, BUYS YOU TIME ........... You have NO IDEA how HARD it is to MAKE that $8 bag of rice or beans you will WISH you had bought. THIS IS SHTF, NOW - WE ARE IN IT - NOW - GET READY IF YOU HAVE NOT. YOU are responsible for YOU. FWIW: The best option is a balance of grass, grains, vegetables, fruits, & livestock. 1. You could stock up on chicken abbit feed stored in steel drums that will allow you to feed them for an extended time after the feed store is gone. This could be extended further by using to supplement there diet with grass (rabbits) or insects for chickens. 2. A tractor to harvest hay, Tractor can be powered using wood-gas to provide fuel after the gas stations are closed. Hay can be used to feed grass feeding animals for winter months. Also helps if you relocate to a region that has short winters & a longer growing season. If you have to many animals to feed for the winter, they can be slaughtered and the meat dried\smoked for longer storage. 3. For harvesting grains like corn a picker sheller can be pulled behind a tractor that will pick & shell corn. For planting, either a tractor mount seeder or small walking seeder can be used to plant. For weeding, a harrow mounted to a tractor. The bigger issue with Corn is the need for a lot of fertilizer for to grow well. 4. For Mice & voles I used raised beds with wire fencing on the bottom to prevent voles from tunneling & planting garlic, onions, marigolds or other plants that repel rodents & insects can be used.. Crushed oyster shells with also work to control voles. Mice can also be killed using traps or poisons. Rats & mice killed in traps can be fed to chickens for extra protein. 5. The issue with livestock is you need someone to tend them every day, water, feed, etc. So no long distance trips unless you have someone that can take care for them in your absence. 6. A Greenhouse can also be used to extend the growing season and also help with pest management (to a degree). But you want to plant high value crops that produce a lot of food & can take advantage of the limited space. 7. You need to plant way more than you need for the year as you could experience a bad harvest (drought, late\early frost, blight, etc). Ideally you want to plant a variety of crops, so that if one particular crop fails you have others to harvest for the year. While storing purchase food will work, but at best you might be able to get by for a couple of years. At some point you need the means to produce your own food. I suspect after a collapse & break down of food\energy distribution, its unlikely to recover in a couple of years. I suspect humanity will enter a second dark ages, like after the fall of Rome, that will last centuries. We all become too specialized and most people will not make it, because the lack skills to be self-reliant. The Survivers will be too busy farming calories to reboot civilization. By the time communities can not devote all of their time for calories it will be more than a generation and all of the modern specialization skill will be lost.

We were taught to grow, harvest & preserve our own food & medicinal herbs. We also learned how to hunt and fish as well as smoke the meat and dry it same goes with many veggies and fruit minus the smoke. We also learned how to use a knife and a gun. Another useful tool is a 1/4"x1&1/2 roundbar about 3 feet long. We also learned how to build makeshift shelters and make sure our homes were safe. Today I have a couple of heating sources, cooking sources, lighting etc "just in case" Chickens and livestock are always a good idea as long as you can feed them Lot more can be said but this should be plenty. You may wish to get an exercise bike and hook that up with a small platform in front of it so that you can use the big wheel on the exercise bike to power the grinder by foot, instead of by hand. That way you will not wear yourself out in preparing the day's bread. Just a small word of advice that may be helpful to those who are trying to think ahead.

Right on! Good, practical advice. Grain storage for feeding chickens, cattle, rabbits, etc is good, practical, food storage. The LDS people have been studying and preaching food storage for generations and probably have a Bishop's storehouse in your area where you can buy gallon size and bulk packaged storage items.

There are literally tens of millions living in cities who have never even set foot in the woods or a wilderness area. If SHTF, they would have no idea whatsoever where to begin, much less how to do anything to survive. 22 years ago, I met a group of people from the California coast who'd never been camping, and were afraid to venture outside onto the front porch of a lodge during the darkness of night!

They will probably be in the "safety " zones. Ya know areas designated as safe with shelter food and water and protection from the "outside" dangers, all provided by " oh so wonderful" big brother. IDK but i have this image in my head from that game The Last of Us, ya know where they had sections of cities under military control. I feel if things did go down and there was some semblance of "gov" they would need a labor pool

Yes, and they will be the ones going into the fema camps or dying fast from lack of food, water or common sense. Fires will be a big issue too once things truly go to hell. Getting away from most people, if you are able to survive that way, will be essential. Most people have no idea what it takes to live off the land, if it is even an option. Idk many people who even know which seasons things are grown in, or their growing zone. It's been close to a decade since I lived on a farm, but we still do some gardening and camping, and plan on rectifying this situation asap. Wish us luck.

They're honestly what I'm afraid of in a real SHTF scenario. Not lack of supply chain, not food shortages or access to health care - some idiot is going to show up and shoot me so they can steal something I would probably have given them and taught them how to make. They think "prepping" is buying ammo and beans. Real prepping? Call your mother and go say hello to your neighbor. Learn to sew.

Thru-hiking the PCT, a lot of people think they’ll be able to catch enough fish/game to offset their food requirements. Yeah, that doesn’t work. It takes hours and hours per day to provide adequate hunting/foraging calories. I missed a resupply while alone in the Sierras and went four days/60 rough miles with only a tenkara rod and zero normal food. It was incredibly trying and I lost a bunch of precious body fat, despite eating half a dozen trout per night. There’s a reason that animals (and people) in the wild spend almost all their time looking for food.

@Brandon Case - people just don't get it. Even the contestants on ALONE survive by living off their body fat. I think I saw one lady who actually survived awhile (longer than the others) because she was smaller - burned fewer calories than the men, was less "busy" and knew how to forage well vs hunt. But even she "'survived" off her body fat accumulated in "civilization". People think a pot of "fish head stew" is gonna cut it - when as you say - half a dozen trout per night still isn't enough. And what are people going to do who have to "provide" for growing families? One person is difficult enough. I cannot comprehend how people are not prepping on the nearly free food (50c a lb for rice, $1 a lb for beans) when they are even today as I write this being told "we are in permenant food shortages" ..... And when all the fish and game are decimated this fall by people already saying they are going to catch however many deer they can because they can't afford food ...... And when SHTF prevents fish and game from restocking the trout and other water "foods"" ....... Hunting and fishing skills don't matter then - its how much "beans and rice" you "caught" when they were "stocked". Happy trails to you .....

Nailed it on the head, if you're relying solely on hunting, trapping, fishing, and foraging, you'll be starving eating dirt and bark by day 3. That's why I'm at the point I'm out of room for storing food, and I've been trying to teach my kids and the neighbors how to hunt, trap, fish, build shelters, and basic first aid

You mentioned feed corn, and it made me wonder- are there any salt lick brands that are safe for human consumption for mineral replacement? I thought of this due to treating many patients who are admitted to my hospital for a variety of ailments including “altered mental state” (delirium) and frequently this is due to electrolyte imbalance. So barring stocking up on barrels of Brawndo the thirst mutilator (to water the crops of course) it struck me as a cheap readily available source of these critical salts/minerals if safe. People should definitely stick up on vitamins and essential amino acids, I’ve seen some people with gnarly irreversible brain damage from thiamine deficiency.

Four things I stock up on and drink daily are: Epsom Salts (magnesium), No Salt (potassium), Pink Salt (sodium and trace minerals) and Baking Soda (kidneys). I mix into an empty 52 oz simply orange orange juice container (stored in ref door) shape of neck is easy to grab and drink out of bottle. : 1/2 teas of each and 1/4 teas salt. I got the idea from "Snake Juice" from the Snake Diet fasting channel. I also buy Kal Bone meal and mix it into anything once a day (goes great in oatmeal, yogurt, fruitshake, mashed banana, rice, pasta). I have stored a couple years supply of electrolyte minerals this way for a few bucks and no sugar gimmick like gatorade. You can decrease the amount to start and increase to your personal taste. You'll like it fast. Don't add flavors or "sweeteners" - it makes it taste yucky. Depending on the amount you add, to me it takes like milk or almond milk - very palatable. A game changer. Can fast 3 days, no hunger with this "snake juice". Also my best "supplement" is dessicated liver capsules. I get the Argentinian Beef Liver caps from Swanson Supplements. Read articles on what liver does to rats placed in barrels of ice water - stress - etc. I hate the taste of liver - so this is my way of getting it - everyday. I buy it on the sales. Always keep it in stock. Take 4 caps every morning with a "SR" brand coconut oil D3 from Amazon. 1 yr in one bottle.

Finally - someone with a realistic view of “living off the land”. Other than as a supplement to one’s diet, hunting is not at all sustainable. Game would be decimated in no time whatsoever. I live in Sask/Canada - one of the least populous palaces in the world with a relatively huge deer population, but STILL there are fewer than ONE DEER PER PERSON.

I think the "x-factor" plays more a role here than we think. I thru hiked the AT on bagels, cheese, bananas, and dark chocolate. Literally I barely got 3200 cal/day walking 20miles/day for 5 months. I gained weight and I think it had a lot more to do with my mental state. Point is, I think stress reduction does play a huge role and that negates the need to calculate caloric rationing down to the .01cal. And yes I KNOW HE WAS JOKING about that .01 calorie counting. As always interesting video, thanks for sharing

Commercial fishing is fishing that is not available to people on land - you would need a commercial sized boat and special equipment : nets, traps, etc., to catch these fish / seafoods. The major impact of no more commercial fishing may be on salmon - but they are only available when they come inland / upstream to spawn - otherwise, again, you need a commercial boat, fuel, parts, etc., to harvest. The fish available "on land" are almost entirely stocked by fish and game and without them, and with increased harvesting due to SHTF, they would quickly be depleted - zero.
