How Much Ammo Do You Really Need?

Bear Independent discusses how much ammo you should have on hand at all times. The short answer: as much as possible. However, with today's supply and demand chain, there are some basic metrics we can apply. For every rifle or carbine, you should have a minimum of 10 magazines (300 rounds per loadout) and, ideally, 30-plus magazines (1,000 rounds per loadout and rifle or carbine). For your defensive handgun, you want a minimum of 60 rounds (three boxes of 20) as your EDC and ideally 200 rounds (per handgun). For target shooting and training practice (which you should absolutely be doing on a weekly basis), you need a minimum of 60 rounds of rifle/carbine ammo and 50 rounds of handgun ammo per week or approximately 2,600-3,000 rounds of FMJ handgun ammo and 3,000-3,500 rounds of rifle ammo per year (if you're training weekly--which you should be doing). Watch now to learn more!

Being fit may be the ultimate defense. I agree.. i am old and fat with a bad knee. So lugging 200 rounds and a rifle any distance is not going to work. My place would be to hook up with other people and guarding our home. I can also fix anx clean firearms and vehicles and teach shooting skills.. Even people in great shape cant carry that much gun and ammo and water and food and camping stuff. Maybe a fit guy on a fat tire bike packed lightly with a carbine ar and a glock. But thats not super common in my world to have all the stuff and skills.

My father wanted to go to Vietnam, but the US Army wouldn't let him. They told him, "We don't want to be seen as recruiting foreigners to do the fighting for us" lol. He was a Norwegian greencard immigrant to the USA, and he really wanted to serve for that privilege. Anyway, since he knew so many languages, they sent him on special assignment as an embassy guard.... To Oslo, where he grew up. That really bummed him out, so he wen't AWOL. He received a letter from some official American office on his 65th birthday telling him that he was pardoned and that he was now free to visit the USA again without risk of military prison lol.
@kebman
@kebman 3 жыл бұрын
The story doesn't end there, though. Since he was home in Norway, the second he "went off duty" for the US Army, the Norwegian army came knocking on his door, demanding that he do the compulsory duty for King and Country. He flatly refused stating that he was in the US Army. The Norwegian colonel just laughed and told him that was the best story he'd heard in a while until my father threw the service card on his desk. Long story short, he still had to serve two years, since Norway don't have an exchange deal with the USA. But they offered him a higher rank (Navy quartermaster, equal to army sergeant) since he was a vet, which he refused in pure defience.

When I was in Combat in the USMC, we carried a 200 round combat pack with our M-16. If you do NOT waste your ammo, 200 rounds will be more than enough for most engagements. As for Resupply, when the shooting is done, you will be able to gather ten times as much ammo right off the ground, along with more weapons and gear. Make every shot count and 200 rounds will suppress most enemy contacts. Waste your ammo and you will be throwing rocks after just a few minutes of engagement. Forget what you see on TV and in Movies. If you have 5 or 6 people in your squad, that will increase your effectiveness against enemy contacts greatly.

UNLESS ALL OF YOU AND SEVERAL BLOCKS OF NEIGHBORS ARE NOT ON THE SAME PAGE, WE ARE ALL GOING TO BE IN A WORLD OF HURT, GRANTED IF YOU LIVE IN A CITY, OUT THE BONNIE'S, OH BOY, THAT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT BALL GAME AND SURVIVAL!!😬😬😬🥴🥴🥴 I BELIEVE THE PREPPERS ARE IN ON IT FOR THE LONG HAUL AND AS THEY ARE PREDICTING, THAT IT WILL BE WAR OF MAN KIND AND SURVIVAL OF THE END OF HUMANITY AND CIVILIZATION TYPE SITUATION. 🤷‍♂️
@banditquest4756
@banditquest4756 3 жыл бұрын
@@Plainsimple67 I agree Sam, 200 rounds in mags with your rifle and gear gets pretty heavy. If you have to walk many miles you will be wearing yourself down quickly, even when you are in great shape, this kind of physical exertion decreases your effectiveness in an engagement. Here is a little test we did when I was in the USMC. Run a short distance, about 1/2 mile, then drop down and quickly do 30 push ups , make sure that your hands are sweaty and wet, with a little dirt on them. Now, immediately grab your rifle and quickly shoot at several small targets. Not shooting from a comfortable standing or sitting position, roll across the ground and shoot from a prone position exactly where your body lands. This is as close to real combat physical conditions as you car create, and you will see that it is much different than target shooting.

For anyone who's planning ahead and wants to be as prepared as possible for whatever bad situation we may find ourselves facing, I believe the 22lr could and should be our best friend, while it's very important to train with your primary and secondary defensive weapon, 90% of our training can and should be done with 22lr from a weapon system that matches our defensive weapons as closely as possible, if your primary carbine is an AR-15 I suggest that you also buy an inexpensive AR-15 chambered in 22lr something like the Smith and Wesson 22lr sport for instance, another option is to buy a conversion kit from CMMG to drop into your AR, do the same for your bolt action rifles and handguns, just make sure whichever 22lr you choose to buy for practice matches your defensive weapons as closely as possible, but the money you'll save on ammunition will pay for these cheap practice weapons within the first year alone if you're training like you should especially with current ammunition prices, but these 22lr weapons provide an inexpensive way to practice your draw, stance, form, get in your physical training if done so on an active shooting range, it's just a good way for nearly anyone to get in adequate training cheaply, if you're practicing long range shooting I know the 22lr isn't going to help you a distances over a few hundred yards, but they're a good way to teach others about bullet drop, and wind drift, anyone capable of making reliable hits at 300 yards with a 22lr can make reliable hits at a 1000 yards with a 6.5 creed.

While I think I need lots of ammo to carry me through the times like now when ammo is hard to come by in stores, in the SHTF it will be picking up guns and ammo from the ones you kill. If you do shoot over 1000 rounds and still alive , anyone near should be dead. You will probably be dead before you shoot 500 rounds . I have been through several times of hard to get ammo. Some times primers, sometimes certain calibers of loaded ammo. I usually reload and keep several thousand primers of each kind and plenty of powder and some bullets not counting all the loaded ammo I have. Bear, I completely agree with your assessment, sir! With the exception of my .38Spl. (I only have about 200 rounds), I maintain a minimum of 1k rounds for each of my defensive handguns. I also maintain a minimum of 3k rounds 5.56/.223 for my AR (600 rounds of that in mags), and 3k rounds of 9mm. Note, I maintain larger amounts for the 2 major NATO rounds! For shotguns, I maintain around 300 rounds each of 12g (for me) and 20g (for my wife). Of those 300, about half is bird shot and the other half is split between 00 buck and slugs. .22LR? I keep somewhere between 4K-6k rounds, some cheaper for plinking/practice and plenty of the good stuff for hunting and self defense (should it ever come to that). Outstanding work sir!

Dry fire is a great way to keep draw and first shot accuracy tuned up with handgun. Also, a great drill on limited ammo is: load two mags with two rounds each- draw fire two into man sized target, mag change, fire two more into adjacent man sized target. Works a lot of skills.

Your enemy will more than likely have friends. Real combat isn't like a video game. More than likely you won't have time to pick up weapons and ammo until the fighting is over. If you win the engagement. Like the man said, you won't have a chopper doing a resupply in a hot LZ. You are on your own. 20 20 round mags would be ideal. If you run out and have to rely on a pistol, you're screwed. And yes, ammo gets heavy. Especially if it .308. It could be worse. In WW2 soldiers had to hump it with 30-06 ammo, a few grenades, gear that was heavy and crappy food in cans. No matter how bad you think you have it, just remember , it could always be worse. It is better that your enemy run out of ammo and die than for you to run out of ammo and die. Just an opinion of a 63 year old.

Some good points made. Tips for more populated areas (urban/suburban): Stick to the most common calibers out there. Generally 9mm and 5.56. Something reasonable to keep in mind for a SHTF situation: 200 rds of anything is enough. If you need to go through 200 rds that fast, you're not going to make it anyway, and carrying much more than than is restrictive to speed. If you carry the most common rds, you will find them everywhere you go in those environments.
@liberty4392
@liberty4392 7 ай бұрын
If you only have 200 rounds you are not going to be able to practice much. I would at least quadruple that so you can train and not burn up all your ammo storage. I mostly train on long guns with 9 millimeter Luger and .22 Long Rifle as it is much cheaper. 2,300 rounds of .22 Long Rifle was not that expensive to acquire. But my .22 Long Rifle would be a last resort weapon. I chose 7.62 x 39 as my primary for long guns.

For my duty sidearm: 18 +1 loaded, 4x 18 on the vest/belt, 6 more with extensions in the bag/vault. 10x resupplies each in reserves in the vault (due to low supply currently, would prefer 3x this). This is a good assessment. I based my load out on the same concept, except I prefer to have a 50 cal ammo can or larger full of loose rounds and a good speed loader, for both pistol and rifle. There will be down time to reload magazines. I also figure, if I'm planning on things going south, I need to apply security. For this I prefer to have a long range rifle available with a high power optic for precision and identification. For that I prefer to have at least 200 rounds for that, for which in my case, that's 200 rounds of 50 BMG and that alone costs 3-4x as much as 5.56 ammo. For training, I dry fire everyday with both my rifle and pistol. I only shoot 20-50 rounds each once a month. I only go with that number because it's not only me, but my wife and oldest son too, so I have to be restrained on my ammunition.

Spot on! Just subscribed havent seen any of the other videos yet. Need to have one on go bags/kits. Hell, even my grandkids have their own carriers. Trucks/vehicles, I have a 1984 gmc jimmy 6.2 diesel. Can run on restaurant oil if need be. It can be monotonous thinking about everything but it's important that every family member has a job and gets on board

You must be delusional if you think you'll survive long enough in a firefight to need all that ammo.... Their is strength in numbers, if you find yourself in a firefight hopefully you have the numbers. Being in a defensive position helps but that wont stop a flank or an ambush if your flying solo or with the get your own ammo attitude... Like who the fuck would trust their life in a firefight to a friend /family member that you wouldn't give ammo to? But very entertaining thanks
@Wastelandman7000
@Wastelandman7000 3 жыл бұрын
Sadly true, but, maybe not for the reason you think. Their strength isn't in numbers. Its in SURPRISE. If you study how these things go down in SHTF situations the bad guys usually get up close, at night, and rush in and try and overwhelm the defenders. If they can't surprise you, they most likely won't try it. They're looking for a score, not a firefight. During Katrina people defending their neighborhoods successfully drove off looters by making them aware that they were aware of the looters. By firing rounds over their heads. Also, the stores that had people on the roof defending them during the LA Riots didn't get burned out. So it can be done. But it requires vigilance. Situational awareness and alertness are your front line defenses, not a firearm. Because your main dangers from humans are surprise and ambush.

Love this video. My general rule of thumb (though I am lacking) is to have 3 rounds per person for my immediate population. This for my battle rifle and 1 round per person for my handgun. Not that I'm worried about my immediate population (mostly a conservative area) but if I have that number I can share with my immediate family/MAG in the area. I am no where near that number because I began this thinking mid covid. But I think its a good rule of thumb. I am currently bolstering my numbers to get to that point.

I wouldn't keep a rifle chambered all the time. We're used to doing this with pistols but pistols are generally drop-safe, especially if the pistol was made in the last 40 years. Rifles and shotguns are not as reliably designed to be drop safe. It's also important to remember that in a fire, rounds that cook-off when loose or in a mag are only a fire hazard and not a ballistic threat. But if a round is chambered and cooks off, the bullet will come out the muzzle at lethal velocity and will be a threat to you, your family, and firemen. The only gun I keep with one in the chamber is my carry pistol - and if I have to leave it at home for any reason, I unload and clear it.
@banditquest4756
@banditquest4756 2 жыл бұрын
I NEVER keep a round chambered unless I am in the field and ready to engage/shoot. At home and during transportation, I do keep a full Magazine attached to my guns but I never chamber a round unless I am ready to shoot. If someone were to break into my home and/or come after me, with my fully loaded magazines attached, I can chamber a round just as quickly as I can switch the safety to fire. There is no advantage to keeping a round in the chamber when storing your gun. Another advantage to attaching a Mag but keeping the chamber empty is that small children do not have the strength to pull the bolt back on most firearms to chamber a round. However, they do have the strength to switch the safety and then they will be able shoot your gun, possibly killing themself of another person.
