Thanks for another great lesson Robin, you have a way to approach the difficult technicalities by breaking the improvisation into bite sized chunks , that when put together, the tune unfolds in new ways everytime that it is played. By using minor scales over two or more chords, the opportunities for inventive lines unfold, and when combined with the use of space or syncopated silences, the playing really starts to swing, and this unlocks the logjam that many players find when they run out of ideas. Thanks for such a clear and simple approach to such a complex subject, it will inspire hundreds of great solos in future, from thousands of new players to the gypsy swing genre. Cheers, Tony Williams.

1. Find target chord and the notes that build it 2. Use the harmonic minor to lead towards target notes 3. End your phrase in that target notes. 4. I understand as a beginner, you want to cramp thousand of notes as much as you can in 1 phrase, that's why it's quite hard to do. Breathe. Again. Breathe. Create it bit by bit. No need to rush and shred it. You'll learn faster and better if you go slow. Breatheee 5. If the chord is for 4 bars, create a line with target notes as the start (doesn't have to be the root) and use harmonic minor to glue and create a pathway towards the target notes of the same chord. ( Start at the third of the chord - harm.minor scale - end at the 5th, or 7th or 1st notes of the chord). Its gonna get better if you know where the next target notes of the next chord. You can play it too. Easing up the transition! That's my two cents and probably like you, I am still struggling to get it under my fingers. Ps: Robin, spare us mortals some seat in the gypsy jazz world. 🙇🙇

Robin, Thank you for another clear lesson for me to follow. I understand an Aminor harmonic on Aminor and its 5th degree E7. When you went to Honeysuckle Rose, I see it is in the key of C. How do you know to use F harmonic minor? If I can understand this, then I can determine what harmonic minor to use in other keys. I appreciate your response to my query.
@GypsyJazzSecrets
@GypsyJazzSecrets 4 жыл бұрын
Bhaj Townsend in Honeysuckle Rose we are basically playing over C7. So then using this idea as with playing the Am over the E7 we play Fm over the C7. This is just one of many sounds but is cool. Cheers, Robin

So for bluesers in regards to honeysuckle rose. Could you think F Minor pentatonic or minor/harmonic, then down to D minor pentatonic but start from the F to give it that major sound. That’s a trick I use for a 12 bar at the turnaround. It seems to work anyway
@GypsyJazzSecrets
@GypsyJazzSecrets 4 жыл бұрын
ElectricMoose if it works for you stick with it.. makes sense. I think you’ll agree that simplifying really helps.. try to play around with that C tension over the Gm7/C7 , Robin

Hi robin! I have a question: what scale do you play when D minor chord comes in, on "minor swing"?
@GypsyJazzSecrets
@GypsyJazzSecrets 4 жыл бұрын
BrianMolina Musik if you’re talking scales then Dm scales work nicely.. you can make it even easier and carry on using the am scale targeting the F natural - also F major works - let me know how you go... practice it at a slow tempo. Robin
