It's quick to 60, gets nearly 40 MPG and actually improves the luxury feel vs the turbo-hybrid by not only being smoother, but by slashing the number of trips you'll make top the gas station.

The AUTO function does enable the engine if you press all the down on the accelerator, that is the difference between AUTO and selecting HV vs EV.

You need to drive it in "Auto" mode. That will keep you in EV until you need acceleration. Also ups the "fun" factor. - In my NX 459h+, with charge in the Traction battery and switch in "AUTO" mode, you can engage the full 304 HP available from all the 450h+'s powerplants. (This is why the acceleration, although "spritely" in pure EV mode, is much more when in AUTO mode.) I've taken to shifting to "Sport" mode and punching the "Auto" button to take advantage of the extra HP that kicks in if I really need it off the line..... feels like a turbo-charger kicking in!

I almost pull the trigger on the 450h+ until the thought of writing that $68k check. Instead I wrote a $52k check on a 24 350h. This is for my wife and she is perfectly happy with the 350h+ and I am perfectly happy with saving $16K.

I think they are fitting in the hybrid where they can based on battery supply, can they physically fit the battery in and what's going to sell for decent price. For example, the Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid. Some people don't like it because the battery is in the metal where the first row seats would normally fold down into the floor.

I just drove an RX450h+ on a 150-mile trip including congested and open freeway, rural highway, and city stop and go. Personally. I'm happy with the four-cylinder drivetrain. It is more than quick enough for any normal use and the six would cost more as well as costing noticeable fuel economy.

If you have a prime you should know that option is there. Switch to auto/ev. The engine comes on only under heavy acceleration. It’s probably the same for this Lexus but these reviewers can’t be expected to know everything I guess.

I've been waiting for this RX plug-in video from you so thank you! I did notice that you did not actually talk about the actual ride or ride feel so that was somewhat of a bummer. I do like you teaming up with this more mature sounding guy though as opposed to others you have used. His inputs seems natural and a bit more knowledgeable and seems a better match for you as a team. My one disappointment in this RX is the lack of a spare tire. I have always had some towing service whether it be AAA or Lexus and find that I can quickly change a tire and be on my way much faster than they can arrive. Add foul weather and its gets even worse. Still at the end of the day, I'd choose this car over the unreliable Volvo any day.

Sometimes I forget that I owned it. By comparison my Acura MDX was one of the most enjoyable vehicles I’ve owned. Even as an SUV, it had way more emotion in the way it drove.

It's good, but not for the price toyota is asking for it (which is ~9 grand over a comparably equipped hybrid). In addition, luxury trim may have some unnecessary features which a buyer would be paying for.

Sometimes it's "the district" choice When we got our '18 prime they told there not available anywhere for hundreds of miles and tried to talk us into a regular Prius. So we said ok we're leaving we'll go find it . Then they actually looked in the computer and found quite a few around FL and they brought it down from Jax so they didn't lose the sale.

Those buttons on the side of the seat, instead of at the bottom at the seat, are strange placement imho. I don't find them ergonomic at all. It's awkward to use your right hand (on the driver seat), and even more awkward to use your left hand where you need to kind turn your body to your right. Unless I'm missing something...

I have the NX450h+ and it has Auto Ev/Hv mode and it does automatic switching to hv when you want to accelerate heavily but runs on EV if you run normally.

I think math is better to spend 50 k on a car with large 8 cillinder engine and use 20 k to burn gasoline for more than 10 years . Nobody goes to a Lexus RX for the most-fun in the segment, and I dont know that they ever have. This seems squarely aimed at Lexus' long-standing customer base. As Alex noted, I'd love to know what the XC60 plug-in is comparably equipped to a base RX, which does have more features. I think its a very close call overall between the two.

You should get the Volvo over the Lexus hands down. The RX is just a nicer rav4. Luxury cars are smooth riding and fun to drive and they’re fast. All three of them combined to give you a real luxury experience. The RX can’t match any of its rivals pricier or cheaper

those are opinions. you are bad with definitions/vocabulary. It's the NX that is more akin to a premium RAV4, as they share the same dimensions and powertrains. The RX is a different iteration of the Lexus GA-K platform and offers more powertrain variants. Those are facts. The Volvos are nice vehicles, but they are older in design, and cannot offer the reliability of the GA-K platform vehicles or Toyota's hybrid powertrains. According to studies from JDPower and others, Lexus offers a superior ownership experience at the dealer level as well, which is part of what constitutes luxury. Finally, the Lexus vehicles will offer higher resale value. @@naveenthemachine

Also more powertrain choices on paper sounds nice but considering none of them are that impressive to begin with why would you even offer that? In the nx for example there are 4 engines but none of them are impressive. You have 200hp, 239hp, 275hp, 300hp Volvos design may look old but it’s a good thing. That designs timeless like the average Mazda or Honda. Not to mention that Volvo has excellent luxury and performance and precision that Lexus can’t match. ICYDK the hybrid powertrains in lexus are also used in Toyotas. So why wouldn’t you just get a Toyota with that power train save the cash and do your maintenance at a Lexus dealer

Agreed👍 Love it when the electric motors do all the propulsion, and the ICE is tuned simply for charging battery. Since there is some efficiency loss converting to electricity, maybe that's why?? Having no transmission whatsoever, (direct drive) and a simple, non VVT engine would seemingly be cheaper and more durable long-term.

We never know what the availability will be like when we first video a car. Our local Lexus dealer however says the wait there (Bay Area) is about 5 months for a PHEV RX.

@@naveenthemachine I was thinking more along the lines of the hybrid model since this Lexus is a hybrid. 38k is basically right on the money for a non poverty spec hybrid rav4. The Prime which shares a powertrain with the RX is 40-50k before the lease tax credit incentive. Toyota has pretty much backed themselves into a corner with their market segmentation strategy. The Corolla cross has now taken the place the RAV4 used to be in which has pushed everything else up by 10k. But they don’t exist in a vacuum.

All the competition is laughing at this nicer rav4 The interior isn’t better than a gv80 or cx90 xc90 x5 aviator etc. in fact it also falls behind the qx60 xt6 telluride and palisade. The Xc90 xc60 x5 aviator cx90 are absolutely better than this rav4 with nicer lipstick in every single aspect. EV’s are all about compromise. Can’t go on a long trip without planning it out in advance and spending time charging at multiple points. Plug ins offer the ability to use the car as an EV in the city and provide flexibility on the highway.
