I served in Navy with Andy's dad and knew his mom and brother. Andy was a very odd kid, base security did not like him. He ran with teen girls who wanted to upset their parents, as did Andy. My main memory of him was an admiral visiting to a building opening in Georgia. A reception line was set up so officers could meet the admiral, with family. When they got to Mr Dick Andy, unlike his brother, was dancing around, flapping his arms, and oblivious to his dad. The family reflects heavily on officers and I really felt bad for Mr Dick. Andy was a little asshole in general.

While it is nice he was adopted, I wonder what his biological parents were like. Many kids go up for adoption because their birth parents are completely dysfunctional. The parents may have been impulsive and drug addicts themselves. He may not have only inherited some tendencies, if the mother used drugs or alcohol while pregnant, things can get worse. Often, couples will go on a religious mission to save one person from the results of a problem union and end up with quite a task.

@csc8697 yes. She was a drug addict and had been clean for some time. Andy gave her cocaine knowing the problems she had because he wanted to party. Andy's life was pure selfishness, and I feel that giving the wife cocaune made him partially responsible, especially because he knew she was unstable. It's like handing a kid a bottle of chocolate syrup, turning your back, and then trying to say you had nothing to do with the kid getting syrup all over the house because you just gave it to him to drink.

@@srso4660t was my biggest hatred for abusers. Narcissists. Realizing there is no situation you could even conceive that would make them understand their impact on others. No Magic. No perfect timeline. Nothing could ever make the individual choose to engage with the wrong they’ve done, and understand it. Let alone change. Except if by some bygone chance they stumbled into the understanding themselves, and recognized it. But that’s only step 0. What is the odds they’ll act on it, rather than sink back into delusion? As close to none as you can get without it being literally impossible. So what do you do? Well you recognize it, and train them like animals. If they bite kids, we’ve got the kennel. If they bite, we’ve got the muzzle and lead. We don’t have the liberty of taking freedoms until certain thresholds are met. Fall like a brick on them when they do. Until then, mark them and navigate around them like any active hazard. Because any active negative action against them is… So totally ineffective that treating them like they are worth treating like a threat you can touch by opposition other than incarceration is a waste of effort, and they aren’t worth even that much recognition. Be cordial. Tow the line. Protect yourself and your friends actively. Otherwise treat like furniture to be navigated around. A beast who cannot be reasoned with. A reptile looking at food. Stay out of their havoc radius if at all possible. This is the good one can muster if they must allow that kind of creature to Damn itself before acting. Now, I don’t think most people are like that. So be sure you’ve identified the type first. Because if you treat one this way, you will inherently alienate them. They’ll feel the fact that they aren’t getting the access others get to relationships. You’ll know them by their actions, and the kinds of things produced by their actions. They cannot see you if you don’t even treat them like something you oppose. They’ll have no obvious bone to pick, or hook to pull. Leaving irrational ones. Which not even the naive are convinced by. This also means they aren’t totally separated from other means of social constraint. Anyway this is my strategy for these types, after realizing you can’t ever expect to reach them. Let them choose then. Watch, quietly. Then strike when they show themselves, aiming for their pacification primarily. No cruelty. No anger. No unnecessary words or attention. If A then B.

I agree in the sense that celebrities receive so much adulation they have a hard time becoming humble. Admitting we are powerless is how we become humble. I had a career in healthcare and there was a group at the hospital where I was employed and it was for medical employees only. It was very anonymous which I do understand bc physicians wouldn't want the public knowing they're addicts or drunks. My home group tho is attended by all walks of ppl...my addiction is the same as anyone's is. The same disease if you will. I remain anonymous only for the reason being....if I get drunk and ppl know I'm in a program they might not seek help bc I've "proven" it doesn't work. I am honest tho that I'm in recovery if it is for the purpose of helping someone wanting help. I was also in my job for so long that I know ppl remember when I was a F'n mess so it's ok if they know I'm not one today. If they ask me about the change in me...i share. I rarely speak of the years I have sober bc I really only have today just like a newcomer. Sobriety for me was only achieved when I admitted and accepted what I was. I can't over think the how when or why of it. I need only say ...This is what I am and this is what I do and where I go if I surrender to the disease. I've learned tools I use but it's my choice to pick em up If I don't want to then I'd better pray and call another addict who won't let me lie to myself. Andy can get and stay sober if he gets out of his own way. I also NEVER sponsor friends. It's a recipe for disaster. I learned the hard way by tryin to fix my kid who was a heroin addict. But hey ...these are things that work for me but I found em by trying everything else. I was hell bent on doing it my way. That's Andy's other prob. Not bc he's famous but bc he's a common drunk and addict....we all are . Let us stay sober today. And tomorrow morning I'll ask for the same. Oh sorry ....one more thing. I've found I need to be really careful when I'm in a good space. My old brain will whisper....u can drink a few, it's been a long time so maybe u never were a real drunk, this time will be different. But y'all already know this. I was only sharing bc I'm having a great day 🤣.

I remember Andy Dick on TV. I was saddened by what I was hearing. I recently heard someone here on You Tube say they themself took the road to get into show business and he said that being famous is truly and absolutely a horrible life and to pity anyone who chooses that path. Hearing that person say what they said (and it was just a few days ago here on You Tube), I suspect this could be true. I think Andy Dick ended up where so many in Hollywood end up. I hope he has his good days. His life sounds deeply painful as do so many stories I've come across about other famous people. I often wonder if being mentally unstable is a key requirement to becoming an actor.

It might benefit Andy to research his birth mother and learn what/if addictions are a given in his bio lineage. Or this might fuel more excuses. He's capable of decent work; Two Broke Girls had him playing a manipulative puppeteer. He can deliver lines. Had no idea how rabid his attention-seeking had become.

@@elle9543 Doesn't quite work like that. A propensity /can/ be inherited, but it's not a guarantee, and if a child is raised in a functional and stable home with love and support, they're shown to be LESS likely to abuse substances. You can't inherit addiction directly, although babies born high on drugs from their mother is about as close as one can get. It's fascinating research, I highly recommend looking up Dr. Gabor Mate

Spent around half my life or more as an active poly addict (did it all but booze, coke, and my main love heroin were the problems) and now that I'm sober I work with addicts on top of growing up and living with em in my family and communities since I'm born til today and I can tell ya, if somebody is abusive, violent, predatorial, etc, high it's almost certain that they're that way sober. Stuff like alcohol, pills like Xanax, and bad turns like cocaine psychosis definitely made me do and say some out there stuff on more than one occasion and I wasn't always very nice when using, kicking, or chasing a fix. But I always had limits, ethics I didn't breach no matter how strung out and outta my mind I was. Most people I've known have been that way with few exceptions. So don't let people use it as an excuse and be sure to really know the situation before giving someone a break cause of it. There definitely are situations where people may do or say things that is just not who they are, but I'm so sick of horrible behavior and ideas being explained by substance abuse.
