I really enjoyed watching this video. The pattern in the billet is simply amazing. I think stopping at 128 layers was absolutely the right call. I hope your brother has learned to shave and that this razor works out great for him.

"This video is RACIST!" - says about 1 commentor per week. The voice at the beginning is my impression of "The Princess Bride" priest plus a little Elmer Fud thrown in and not an Asian accent. But so what if it had been. The video and name of the razor are meant to poke fun at old Kung Fu movies by way of specific material in the movie "Black Dynamite", a modern day classic that takes aim at Kung Fu movies and so-called "Blaxploitation" films. Do people freak out over "Kill Bill"'s whimsical prod at the genre or the hundreds (maybe thousands) of other mainstream movies, TV shows, comedy routines and other media that poke fun at these films? No. The 70's style Kung Fu movie is a rich and often hilarious phenomena that is parodied widely. In some cases those parodies can elevate the base material and astound, such as one of my all time favorite movies, "Kung Fu Hussle." So, let's all get a grip on ourselves. Surely we are not so frail, angry, ignorant or bored as to consider this video "racist."

Well that sucks. I’ve heard channels like demo ranch has had 3 or 4+ year old videos get demonetized because it broke the standards of the KZbin machine put out 2 years ago. I really like your videos and the knifes you make are really cool. You are really good at this sort of thing even if 50% get trashed. If it were me, 99.99999999999999999% would be trashed and only luck would survive. Thank you for having the world of forging seem easy.

Was not a total fan of the handle at first glance but the result is breathtaking. Everything is perfect and that gives the razor a unique personnality. I would definitely cherish that kind of blade for décades. The final color of the whole razor is exceptionnal. Such a deep grey gives it boldness and power, all the more with the contrast the damascus offers. You never fail to surprise me!

a little hint. for face shaving you need a very high layer count of soft/hard or use 2 different hard elements. also a tight twist also provides the best microscopic edge for fine shaving. the act of twisting can also catvh any bad welds if you do it at welding heat. you can tell its slow speed by watching the contact wheel

You know, i have been trying to learn smithing for a while now. I have loved all things medievial since i was a child. Now i have almost everything i could need, but i still am finding myself having trouble forging. I think its a case of taking the first step, i dont know. I dont have a forge, but i have everything i think i need to make something that could work as a forge. I bounced back and forth between propane and charcoal. I bought a propane weedburner that i was going to use, but was a bit hesitant of it, so now its back to charcoal again. I dont know, i really want to get it started, maybe im procrastinating a bit as well. But videos like this really make me want to go out and forge. So, hopefully soon i will be working some hot iron.

i have a really good idea for an upcoming project of yours. If you add pure nickel sheets to damascus, and after the etching you heat anodize the blade you will get a black/white/blue pattern. the nickel is resistant to the etching and heat anodizing, the other 2 steels are not

Helpful tips: see the gaps you are leaving in between the steel when you weld the steel together before the forge weld? That can let scale build up in between the steel and that'll cause delaminations. Clamp the steel together in a vise when arc welding or mig welding to minimize that gap.

Lay-person here, would it be a bad idea to put flux between the steel before forge welding? Or perhaps "build" the layers as you go by forge welding each layer one by one? I realize this would fatigue the initial pieces of steel that you would "build" on. Thanks!
@leojanczak6751
@leojanczak6751 5 жыл бұрын
Flux between layers impedes steels ability to forge weld without inclusions is the steel. That’s why you want the pieces to be tight before you weld the block, and apply flux as forging. Adding each layer sounds good, but as scale builds you end up with less material, and harder to get clean fusion between pieces. Fatigue is one way to put it, stress fractures during heat treat is what would happen.

So I use a straight razor routinely. Even though I haven't seen if your brother could shave with this one or not I'd be willing to bet it wasn't the best. I used to go to 6k on Japanese water stones and then strop, but 8k and higher really does make a difference. I'd recommend giving that a whirl before forging another one if this one didn't turn out to be as smooth of a shaver as you'd hoped.

@randoprior4130
@randoprior4130 7 жыл бұрын
Old Hickory Forge if you cut the grooves in then grinded it flat you would end up with almost no pattern in my mind. You'd have to either forge them in and grind them off, or grind the grooves and then forge it flat. If you ground them in then ground them out you haven't stretched the layers at all and that's what causes ladder pattern.
