the only difference in the blade is that sometimes the back of the curve was sharpened as well as the front for hacking limbs. brutal but true

I don't remember where I saw this, but if you have damascus steel, and a special type of acid, you can make patterns on the blade via folds made during forging. It's a complicated and maybe expensive process, but it looks incredible.
