I love these kinds of videos where you just show it. It’s so soothing and nice. I don’t mind the others where you explain when I’m in the mindset for it, but these are so nice when I’m overstimulated and just want to watch your process 🥰💕

It is not, strictly speaking, Damascus..... Modern swordsmiths do not need to replicate either for strength as the modern steels they have access to are at least as good, and probably better than Wootz or Damascus. What most of them are doing is replicating the distinctive pattern of Damascus steel, rather than recreating the complex crystaline structure of true Damascus steel. Still beautiful and well done, but to my knowledge no one has, as yet, recreated the process of making either Wootz or Damascus steel, only managing to replicate the look to this date. Not denigrating the Smith here, the work is wonderful and requires a great deal of skill, however it is also not truly Damascus steel. Pattern welding alone does not make something Damascus, as Pattern Welding has been utilised for thousands of years.... As has forge welding layers, which is the technique being used here. The final crosscuts and dimples being added with the drill are literally designed to achieve an (admittedly attractive) aesthetic. With true Damascus steel those steps would not have been needed.... Damascus steel is not an aesthetic, it is literally a TYPE of steel, just as EN45 is a type of steel. Because of its occlusions and matrix when layered it happened to have a very distinctive patterning on the blade, just as Wootz did. High quality swords tended to be layered right up until the point when people worked out how to mass produce high quality homogenous steel in relatively large quantities some 200 - 300 or so years ago. At about that time the skills for making crucible steels such as Damascus and Wootz were lost.

I just came across your site- fantastic! I don't know enough about the craft but from watching every episode of forged in fire- you take it to a completely different level and quality. So very nice of you to share your expertise.

Adding this one to my favorites of your work. All your Bowie knife builds, the Witcher 3 sword, and the raven claws on the crossguard of the, if I recall, the warlock sword. I enjoy watching all your work as each piece is a work art. As of the time of this comment Christmas day 0039 CST USA three down votes. I will never understand.Thank you for sharing Sir.
