Wow - that is the first time I've seen a smith do a Damascus steel stack with a liquid flux infusion and wire twist compression. I AM TRULY IMPRESSED! (It looked so much more clean and efficient than bead welding and losing grain pattern to the angle grinder later).

Such a cool pattern! That was so interesting how you formed the tip of the sword. At first I didn't know why you were cutting into the metal, then it all made sense. My guess is that the Demarcus steel section wasn't hardenable steel? Or was it just for the look because that sword definitely looks amazing!
@13thwoodsong
@13thwoodsong 7 жыл бұрын
This is done so that the edge of the blade is the same steel all along up to the point, instead of transitioning from monosteel to the pattern-welded core up near the tip, I believe. Whether the Damascus section is hardenable or not is not the main concern here - at least that's my understanding.

Any idea on how one would cut out the tip back in the day before grinders were a thing?
@joshholdren8158
@joshholdren8158 7 жыл бұрын
neovictorius it was probably done differently than forge welding the tip together as he did. Not only would it have been hard to cut, it would waste material that's already expensive. They, I assume, probably forge welded the cutting edge steel around the pattern welded section, and then drew it out to a sword.

Very good video, may I ask what Liquid do you put on the Steel in 3:00 and why? Thats a nice twisting tool! :) I really like, how you did the tip. Very good idea! What was this you used for grinding in min 14:42 ? A stone? Thanks, one Day I will try to forge a pattern welded sword... today I forged a dagger :) Subbed and liked, of course! Greetings from Germany, Edgar
@freerkwieringa275
@freerkwieringa275 7 жыл бұрын
the liquid is a borax solution, it is a flux that helps with the welding of the steel layers, the grinding help is a file ,a very crude one to get even fuller line. the dagger is the true blade smiths bench mark if you can get it right you can make everything.
@edgarderschmied4497
@edgarderschmied4497 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, interesting with the borax solution, I use borax for welding too, but in powder form. Maybe I will try it with the solution next time, it sounds very interesting. Its my first dagger, and I think it looks quite nice, I'm going to harden it today, I hope everything works fine :) Greetings from Germany Edgar
