That is such an incedible amount of work! You don't realize that when you simply see one. I suppose, in days of old, waterphone makers must have eventually gone deaf. Thanks.

There is no "days of old". The waterphone is a modern invention by Richard Waters, who is still very much alive.

Wow, wonderful instrument and really inspiring video! I'm making some DIY analog modular synth stuff, never tried physical music instruments but really want to:) Does it require any calculations / specific ratios to get it sounding right, besides the tuning of the rods?

some instruction would be nice. what kind of metal? what was that giant cuter? why hammer the metal? why not but a metal bowl! what is the technique???
@coreyshipe9 жыл бұрын
+James Barrett That cuter is call a "Throatless Shear". He probably used brass or silver. He uses a hand forming or forging hammer to stretch and bend the metal against an Anvil. His technique is just basic "hand forming" of metal.
@Helisepp9 жыл бұрын
+James Barrett The metal is nickel silver, it's no silver. It is like brass with a little bit of nickel inside. The tube is made of brass. I hammered it because hammering is my profession. It's an old handicraft tradition in Germany and it sounds much better than industrial metal sheets.
@eteppeter8 жыл бұрын
i ws wondering if you could tell me please, at 7.13 are you cooling down the drum or is the the process of the filling it up with water, once the water is inside can you pour it out? i suppose it matter how much water you have in because will it adjust the pitch of the sound?
@eteppeter8 жыл бұрын
Also i work with a lot of lead especially on roofs, i know when i am beating it around a chimney say i only have a certain amount of time i can hit it otherwise it will start to tear, is this the same with the nickel silver? what advice do you have please?
@Helisepp8 жыл бұрын
Peter It's no water. It's a kind of acid to clean it from the oxyd from soldering.

Nice work! I would be grateful if you answer some of my questions. Is this instrument tuned (e.g. like a piano or something like that)? Can someone play a certain pitches (C, C#, D, D# etc) or scales (e.g. a minor or a major scale)? What's the thickness of the bronze and alpaka sheet that you use to construct delphin waterphone (18-21 cm diameter)? Thank you!
@Helisepp10 жыл бұрын
Those instruments are not tuned. I once tried to make a tuned waterphone, but I was not so glad about this sound.kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIiuaKSgh9itg5Y I have an idea to try it another way, but it's much work to develop ist. The thicknes of the sheet is 1 mm.
@pusurblue148 жыл бұрын
hi, im just wondering what's the diameter of the bronze rods ?
@pusurblue148 жыл бұрын
and what do you use to solder the bronze rods in place?

By floating it there that is where the water part comes into play😨
Thank you for this video! I was wondering, what are you using for your rods? And how did you calculate their pitch ? Can I use anything for the body or will the size affect the tone/pitch as well?
@Helisepp5 жыл бұрын
The waterphone is not tuned. In this case I used nickel silver for the body and the rods because of the sound quality of this metal. (Long sustain and nice overtones)
@MaxedMusicArts5 жыл бұрын
@@Helisepp But you used a ruler to cut the rods. Was that just random? Also where could I get rods like that?
