"One may with it, resist many swords and other weapons; therefore in the wars it used for the defence therefore because being of itself able to contend with many it may better safeguard the same. and because of it weight and bigness require great strength therefore those only are allotted to the handeling thereof witch mighty and big to behold, great and strong in body and of stout and valiant courage." Omg that'ts amazing!!! love watching your videos and i'm learning :) What was the white powder you used on the metal before quenching?
@freerkwieringa275
@freerkwieringa275 7 жыл бұрын
that is borax, it seals the metal from oxygen, so there is less chance of carbon reduction.

Zekt yes I did. It is lime to slowly cool down the blade. It makes it soft so I can work it by hand

Interesting - I may be completely misunderstanding, but did you freehand the tempering with the torch, or did you manage the temper with the lime/ash sprinkled on the blade just before the oil quench to control hardness/temper simultaneously? I've always thought to harden and then temper in two different stages (either differential hardening through the back/spine or in an oven), but that's partly because I don't know how to control the hardening to the degree where it isn't brittle initially. If you are getting your temper straight from the oil bath, is it largely a testing method of trying various steels with various oils, is it approximately the same between spring steels, or is there a reference sheet somewhere you follow?
@freerkwieringa275
@freerkwieringa275 7 жыл бұрын
the temper was with a torch, the powder is borax, the big powder bath is lime. this is for softening before hand working. I use a "mare temper" method, I remove the blade from the oil bath around boiling temperature the blad hardens until a certain point but I can still work on it until is is cooled down in the air. also the extreme strain is not put on the steel. It can be uses as a hardering/temper method in one. afterwards I temper with the torch to be sure there is no stress left in the blade. This method works well on swords and big knifes, on small knifes a different method is required because hardness is a bit lower. I use material tables for hardening and temper temperature and oil type.
@freerkwieringa275
@freerkwieringa275 7 жыл бұрын
also, i am always experimenting on different methods, I am not a master blade smith, so my methodes are not the "bench mark".
